Help me settle an Olympics bet!

I'm sitting here talking to DH about the Olympics.

What year did the Olympics start going every two years.

I seem to remember two competitions in 1988, but I may be wrong.

When did this two year thing start.

The 1992 Summer games were held in Barcelona (one of the best Olympics, IMO) and the 1992 Winter games in Albertville, France.

1994 saw the games alternating with the 1994 Winter games in Lillehammer, Norway and then the 1996 Summer games two years later in Atlanta.

Ok. I could backtrack up to 1994, but then I couldn't remember if 1992 was split or not.
