We will be flying for four hours from STL to San Diego for our trip in less than three weeks! I want to make sure I pack some things in the carryon bag to keep our three year old busy. I already have our travel dvd player and some dvds ready. What else should I bring along?

I love those new Water Wow books. My 2 and 3 yr olds love to see the colours appear and it's so nice that they are reusable. I just get a little cup of water from the flight attendant to fill the water pen with. They've got all kinds of characters -Dora, My little Pony, Buzz lightyear, the Princesses.
Snacks are important too. I buy little packs of those cookies and crackers and fruit snacks. They are fun and my kids don't get them often so it's a treat.
Those things and the DVD's should do it.
Have a great time!!

I totally forgot about those. We have the sesame street water book that is great! Thanks for reminding me!

My 5 yo has been on over 20 airplane rides all over the world. The best advice I ever got and used was to buy several small gifts (crayons, small games, hot wheels, etc) and wrap them. Let them pick a "present" at various times throughout the trip. For our last trip it was a 3 hour bus ride to the Narita airport in Tokyo. So when he got on the bus, he got a present. Then he got one after we went through customs at the airport. Then he got one when we got on the plane. We told him he could have one after the meal was served but he fell asleep! :)
I've heard rumors that they may make you unwrap any presents during the security check. If that is the case then I would suggest measuring out some wrapping paper to fit your gifts, Get some of that scotch tape where it gives you the small precut strips for wrapping presents (no sharp edge on the dispenser) and wrap them AFTER you get through security.
Hope this helps!

silly putty or small play doh, colorforms or sticker book, I also kept a sucker or candy for an emergency. I keep a plastic box under my bed with airplane stuff in it and my kids only get to use those things when we travel. I keep my eyes open for small interesting things all the time to add to the box.

I agree that you should definitely bring some new toys or activities that you can bring out when time starts to drag. One thing I did was print out some of the playsets and games from Disney Magic Artist Online ( http://disney.go.com/magicartist/index.html - it's free!). I also got some of the Disney play sets from Disney Shopping (also available at the Disney Stores), which were a big hit on our last trip.

Dont forget a little cup with lid so when they serve the pop you can be sure you wont be wearing it or stepping in it when it spills. ;-)

We love the Color Wonder books by Crayola. The markers work only on the paper and there are some cute themes right now like Cars, Pooh, Princesses, etc.
Stickers are always a big with my kids too.
A lovey for some down time is always nice...
Have fun!

I fly cross-country a lot with my daughter (just the 2 of us) she is nearly 2 so have a few suggestions I've done and some that I have been saving for the right time as she gets older. In all the trips we've done, she's never cried or been unhappy except the one time she had colic at 6 weeks of age.

Anything that I bring on the plane for her is either new or it's just something that is for travel use only so it's always new to her. I pack the supplies in my suitcase for the return trip, I rewrap everything as well as anything new I pick up during the trip. Anything I bring as a distraction is in a large ziplock bag-- keeps the items organized and easy to get out. typically I have 10 ziplocks organized into 2 or more 2.5 gallon bags.

DVD player: make sure the headphones have noice cancelling part to them, some planes are noisier than others. Have the child wear them at home to get used to them -- make adjustments at home so you aren't scrambling on the plane. Make sure the battery is charged.

Instead of wrapping the little gifts, try putting them in plastic Easter eggs; I do small toys or place a few M&M's in them. Wrap them with Saran Wrap (different colored wrap), use a lot so it takes some time to undo it all put tape all over it as well; you have a 5-10 minute project and then the prize. Normally she wouldn't get the small toys (choking hazard) but she is going to be seated and I am right there watching so I don't worry about it. Once she's done playing with it, into the backpack it goes until next time.

Buy a wallet, put in old ID's, expired gift cards, pictures, fake money, etc. A big hit with the smaller ones because we all know how interesting Mom's wallet is....

Cheerios and dixie cups offer many minutes of sorting fun.

cash to buy those seated around you a drink if your child is acting up-- buys good will. Actually acknowledging that it could happen when everyone is seated helps; it lets them know you are aware it could happen and decreases the tension.

A small box of chocolate for the in-flight staff-- they love it and will go out of their way to help de-plane and with extra snacks and taking away all the saran wrap and other trash. They know a happy child makes the whole plane happy and if you are trying to make that happen, they will be right there with you.

My daughter loves books so I always bring several new board books as well as a couple of favorites.

Scotch tape, several rolls. I lay strips of it on the tray and she spends over a half hour peeling it off and rolling it up. I went to the Dollar store and bought a several rolls-- I passed it around to other parents who needed a distractions with their child.

Small cans of playdough with the cutting shapes--

Travel Doodle-pro

A spare (or 2) loveys-- stuffed toy she can't live without (that I tie to the backpack).

One we will be trying a large shape puzzle--16 pieces at most. Another suggestion is cutting out pictures of disneyland and bringing glue and a large sheet of paper-- make a collage of what will happen at the parks.

She's not into coloring or painting yet but eventually I will bring the books that were suggesting in an earlier post.

I pack everything for the plane for her in a hiking backpack-- it's big but it fits under the seat infront of her and doesn't impact my legs. It's easily reachable and has tons of pockets, places to hook things, slots, etc. It is heavy but doable.

I booked a really early flight so DS 6 will go to sleep, but our flight is only about an hour :)

Leapster and Video Now work great for us as well as color books and crayons. Also a deck of cards for "Go Fish". For some reason the barf bag seems to entertain DS (5) for part of the time, he likes to pretend he has to use it........

My daughter has flown all over the country since she was 3 months old..We have used everything..but the best investment we made was a portable dvd player...it is great

Our flight leaves at 9:10am but we'll have to be up early so that we can get to the airport early, so I'm hoping he will sleep some of the flight too.

Don't forget a blankie or bedtime stuffy if he uses one;)
When we took our son for his first flight (5yrs), I took his own blankie, and simply said that we have nap time on the flight.....no fuss about it...just factual information as if everyone did it. He believed me and after we took off, I gave him his bedtime blanket and he was out for about an hour:)
We had a 9am flight, so after being up early and all the excitement of the morning, a nap is a good way to have peace on a flight.
However, my brother in law has to use gravol to persuade his kids to nod off :rolleyes1 but hey whatever works
