I am not an alarmist. I don't plan on cancelling my cruise or my upcoming trips to Disney......but can someome tell me what safety measures are in place for the cruise line? I cold just use a little reassurance, I guess....
You can't get near the terminal unless you are on the list for the cruise and have a photo id proving who you are. For example, if you take the Avis or Budget shuttle, the shuttle drivers will take you to DCL last if there are any other people for other cruiselines on your shuttle, because DCL won't let the shuttle in unless it's just the driver and DCL cruisers.
They have x-ray and metal detection systems set up right at the entrance to the terminal (it used to be at the entrance to the ship, now anyone going in to the terminal must be screened first).
When in various foreign ports, DCL does not allow packages to be delivered to the ship (you must carry the package on yourself and it must go thru x-ray). Adults must show a photo id when leaving and when getting on (as well as your KTTW card). Again, anyone boarding the ship must go thru the metal detector and packages/purses, etc. must be x-rayed.
Being concerned at this point in life with everything going on is normal.
Rest assured DCL does everything it can to secure the safety of it guests and cres. First of all you cannot even get into the parking lot of DCL unless you have cruise documents so people coming to "just see the ship" are not permitted.
DCL screens every piece of baggae that is brought onboard. The carryons are scanned before you check in (just like at the airport) and the checked bags are scanned and sniffed by dogs in an area away from passengers. They are very diligent about checking ID's.
You cannot book a same day trip, meaning someone cannot just come to the terminal and say...I want to sail today.
They even now require every person sailing to have their address and phone # on the reservation. This is new because we always take our kids friends with us and they could always be under our address and phone #, but this time DCL and immigration are requiring each individuals address and phone # be on the reservation.
I am sure there are tons more security measure that we do not even see, but these are just some of the more obvious ones.
One more question. I don't want to sound paranoid because I really am not...but: What about while at sea? what prevents the ship from being approached by another vessel?
Well, actually nothing prevents another vessel from approaching, and in fact, DCL has been known to approach vessels that appear to be in distress (though unless circumstances require, the people are not allowed to come on board); however, the Coast Guard seems to be very available when needed.
The Coast Guard is a very visable presence at US ports of call, and the appropriate military at non-US ports (for example, we were escorted in to port by a Mexican Navy Gun Boat at Cozumel).
I would think that entering and leaving ports is probably the most vulnerable time, since that's the easiest place to find the ships - and because of this, it's also the location that you see the most security provided by the CG or appropriate Navy.
(Remember me from our first cruise? Long time no see... )
I see where you mentioned going into Cozumel, so obviously you guys have done the western cruise too! When did you go? We went on the western in Oct. last year. We liked it better than the eastern. We are already booked for 3 more Disney cruises! Gotta love it!
