Help Me Explain to Non-Disney People Why I Love Disney...

I hope this is where this thread should go.

First, my friends just thought I was just needing to catch up on those attractions I didn't see the first time I went.

Then, when I was on my fourth trip, they thought I was a bit eccentric.

Now they just think I'm plan 'ol nuts. You get the usual "why don't you go somewhere else for a change? Why don't you go to an adult place like Vegas? Aren't you a little bit too old for Disneyworld?"

I'm sure alot of you know the bliss when you find another adult who loves Disney and WDW as much as you do.

Any thoughts on how I can explain why without me quoting from any of the Disney movies or songs???? :wave2:

I gave up on trying to explain it a looong time ago :teeth:

I've found that either people "get it" or they don't. So I don't waste my time anymore. Besides..that time could be better spent planning my next trip :lmao:

I am in the same boat....Disney is all we want. My in-laws are trying to convince us that Europe is a must for us....I don't want to go to Europe right now. Maybe later when my kids are older, but right now, Disney is my one and only passion.

My in-laws don't understand why we keep going over and over. To them, WDW is the Magic Kingdom and that's it. They don't even bother with our pictures and barely ask us about our trip when we return. Plus, they think that only rich people go to Disney....So they assume that everytime we go, we spend a big fortune. We keep telling them that going to Disney is no worse than spending a week long vacation in Mexico. Sometimes Mexico is even more expensive.

Live and let live. If you like the beach, great! If you have a cottage and your idea of fun is spending your summer vacation there, super! To each his own. We love disney and don't feel we have to justify our choice for vacation destinations to anyone. It is sad that most people don't get it though.

You will never convince the non-Disney lovers that there is anything good about it. I just say "WE love it there, and that's where we choose to spend our vacations." Of course, I am the non-confrontational one, DH is more adamant when he tells them "leave us alone, it's our vacation."

I just go to the happy place in my mind (usually sitting on a bench on Main Street eating Mickey ice cream) and walk away.

My dh went for the first time in '01. While planning that trip, he said..."This will most likely be it for me as far as WDW goes, so let's eat at all the really good places." Well, he's going for about the 4th time in May! He is a true type A person. We have tried all the other vacation options..the beach, city, mountains...WDW is the only place we all can enjoy. There is always something for him to do there.
I'm not sure you will be able to change anyone's mind though. My adult children still tell me the I belong to the Mouse Cult!!! Of course, ds (33) has been to WDW once when he was 7, and dd (29) has never been...so what do they know!!!
I just smile, knowingly, when someone makes that 'WDW again?' comment. I mean, for heavens sake, they go to the same house on the Cape every year...what's the difference?

If you have to explain - then it is not worth your time.

More for you and the rest of us to enjoy !

If you find the answer let me know....everytime we tell people we are going back we get the same response AGAIN!!! And I say yes we love it and where else can 2 adults and 2 children have more fun. :)

We're going on our second trip and we get the "Again???" comments already.

I just say, "It makes me happy," and leave it at that.

Oh, we get these comments all the time. Even the, how can you afford the resort you are staying in when you go so much? I don't even bother trying to explain. DH could really care less where we take our small vacation trips to....so I do the planning and we also go on other trips during the year so it works out.....people who don't get Disney really don't know what they are missing...I mean, Pleasure Island, golfing, etc...there are alot of adult activities...:)

My mother is like that. I was dreading telling her about the spur of the moment trip--dd and I leave tomorrow! :mickeyjum :donald: Particularly since dh can't go because of work issues. She thinks that I make him go when he really loves to go, as well. Anyway, when I finally told her, she said, "What, AGAIN??" I just looked her in the eye and said, "We like it there. We have fun." I was shocked that she backed right down.

Now I have converted several people so I have others in my little cult. :teeth: One friend was so bummed about our upcoming trip that she's now booked one for summer! And I'm helping a coworker plan her honeymoon there this fall.

Ahhh...the "dreaded" explination talk.

My coworkers all used to be like that. In the begining they saw me get excited about my upcoming trips. They would shake their heads, and I would just smile. A huge, toothy, cheesy smile :teeth: .

Then one day, one of those girls came up to me. She asked me to tell her about disney again (***GASP***...was she not listening the other hundred times I had talked to them about my trips and planning?!? But...OH SHUCKS...I have to talk about disney again ;) ).

So we talked. I pulled up information. Made up little packets. Needless to say she and her boyfriend ended up going, and I made their ADRs ;). Oh, and shortly after the first co-worker approached me...another came along! And so it began! I am on my 3rd planning for a co-worker. It's what I do, and it's what I love.

So, I feel my positive attitude (NEVER had anything negative to say after returning from WDW) and my "disney" glow after I returned helped change their minds. Having that sparkle in your eyes while talking about Disney helps too.

And hey, if they don't get it now...they will...it may be a long time down the road, but they will :thumbsup2

I just love this thought! ***sigh*** My happy place... :cloud9: Mickey sandwich....

OP--Know what you mean. I'm starting to feel guilty about planning another Disney vacation. Whenever someone asks where we're going next, I just kind of mumble and walk away. I hate keeping this a secret, like it's something coversive! :sunny:

I am not sure how to explain to anyone, gave up years ago. I just figure that they need to respect my choices for going as well as my respect for them choosing not to go...

I just had this discussion with my co-workers yesterday. My fiance and I made our ressies for our honeymoon. One of the girls I work with, said "You really don't care to go anywhere else in the world do you?"

Then I received the ever popular...there's more in FL than Disney World from my other co-worker.

I just told them it was no different than people that go to the beach every year, or people that have a time share and go to the same place every year, I just choose to go to Disney. They couldn't really argue with that, especially since my one co-worker has a time share in Orlando! :confused3

Because they are  doesn't make you :scared: !

Start hanging around a different crowd! That's what we did. :goodvibes

I think people who haven't been to WDW don't understand the size of the resort. In turn, there is soooo much to do at WDW. In all the times I've visited, our family has not done certain activities we've wanted to do. WDW is our home away from home. It's sooooo convenient with everything so close. The transportation options are abound. I love the fact that we can jump into a car, monorail, boat, bus, etc and go anywhere on property we want. You can't do that in San Diego, Miami, Dallas, Myrtle Beach, etc. In those tourist cities, you'd have to drive across town to get to attractions like the beach, zoo, etc. To me, that's not a true vacation. It's a hastle!

I tell my DW there isn't anything you can't do at WDW that you couldn't do anywhere else with the exception of skiing and hunting. I'm not a cold weather person anyway and I don't like hunting. You can even surf at WDW!

I also feel the deluxe resorts are extremely nice and rank in the top of any resorts I've ever seen or visited.

There's a reason WDW is the number one tourist destination in the world. People obviously enjoy it. Everybody has their own reasons for enjoying WDW. Unless you've been to see what WDW has to offer you really can't form an opinion.

We go at least once a year. It is the one place where our whole family can be doing the same things and having a great time. My coworkers used to tease me until they all went on their "first" trips to WDW. Well, can you believe, they are now all planning to go back!!!! They were shocked at how much fun their family had and how much there was to do. The only people who criticise are the ones who have not gone.

When you think about it, why WOULDN'T you want to go back??? It's one of the trips people save years to do with their families. How many kids "want to go to Disney World". Why would it be so strange that you would want to go on this fun vacation as often as you can??? Boggles the mind, but some people just don't get it!!!

I'm with the "planner" person. I'm helping the 4th person in the last couple years plan thier trip. Finally I just "saved" all my information and now instead of re-writing it for each person I can just personalize and print it off.

My happy place is sitting on Sunset Blvd with one of those icy drinks listening to the 40's music, people watching and occasionally hearing the screams from TOT. Ely
