"CRUISE CANCELLATION FEES:
CATEGORIES WITH RESTRICTIONS: Reservations for Inside, Outside or Verandah Categories with Restrictions are NONREFUNDABLE and NONTRANSFERABLE. A 100% cruise cancellation fee applies from time of payment."

HUH?

What classifies a Category with Restrictions?

Also it states: "For cancellations, amounts paid, minus cancellation fees and other amounts owed, will be promptly refunded. " are the cancellation fees the amounts you forfeit when cancelling post 90 days sailing?

Thanks... I know he is going to drill me on these cancellation questions this weekend. I already booked our rooms, I paid both deposits, and he is still worrying.

I decided to put my whole family (5) in 1 room, and just FIL & MIL in the other, in case we need to cancel them... it will be easier that way!!!

Categories with Restrictions are usually club level rooms. Those rooms have a different cancellation period then regular rooms. Also some European cruises and other rates (GTY, Florida Resident, Military, CM) have different cancellation rates then rack rate rooms.

The cancellation fees are the amount you forfeit past your PIF date which I believe in 75 days. They are listed on the contract of carriage as %. At some point you will lose everything if you cancel.

That usually refers to a special rate such as Military, Florida Resident, or *GT as those must be paid in full at the time of booking.

Other than that, unless you booked Concierge, your deposit is fully refundable up to the Paid In Full date. Then the percentages kick in.

OH I forgot to add holiday cruises have different cancellations as well. If you are on a holiday cruise make sure you read the fine print for your specific cruise.

Thank You both. I was confused because it says "Reservations for Inside, Outside or Verandah Categories with Restrictions" which obviously aren't club level. But that makes more sense with the discounted rates.

We are cruising 11/10/18, Very MerryTime, but not over an actual Holiday date.

How long is the cruise? That also affects your cancellation period now. I am guessing a 7 day since you said you were told 90 days.

Are you in a concierge or suite room as well?

Yeah, that cruise will have the regular cancellation policy unless you booked a special rate (there aren't any yet). They would be explicit that there are no refunds at time of booking when/if you book them! :)

It is the 7 night Western Caribbean, and we are in a Deluxe Oceanview room.... phew! I'm sure he is going to have more questions that I can not answer, but that's why I have you guys :cutie:

Those rates refer to what are termed VGT, OGT and IGT (veranda guarantee, outside guarantee, inside guarantee) which means they are offering bookings at a substantial discount, but are instituting restrictions such as the reservation is nonrefundable, you pay in full at purchase, and you cannot pick a specific stateroom, they will assign one to you. If you did not book one of these rates (and you'd know if you did) you're not under that restriction. These rates are usually popping up within a few months of a sailing (most of the time after the paid in full date, so those who have already booked can't cancel without a penalty to rebook the discounted rate.)

I don't believe there are other rates that are completely nonrefundable, but concierge rooms have nonrefundable deposits, and it is possible that cancellation periods may change for certain types of cruises. If you look up your reservation online, you can see what your paid in full date is. The cruise is not necessarily completely nonrefundable after that date, but it usually marks the last chance for you to cancel for a full refund (except concierge, where the deposit isn't refundable at any time.)

You did the right thing by booking your family in one room. It doesn't mean the kids can't 'sleep over' in grandma's room, though.

At some point all cruises become nonrefundable. The restricted rates come out close to sail date. They are discounted, and since it's so close to sail date they are already nonrefundable. Trip insurance will cover all cruises regardless of how they are booked.

I have no right to ask, but I'm hoping you took insurance. That might help to ease FIL's mind. My family are pretty nuts about insurance. We have, however, had need of it.
