Help me decide on rental vehicle.

Who's traveling?
4 adults and 1 preschooler in large carseat.
What's traveling?
2 large suitcases, 2 medium suitcases, 1 umbrella stroller, 3 backpacks, one small duffle (for souveniors on the way back to airport) possibly 1 small carry on size suitcase.
We have rented a mini van in the past but that was because we were traveling with a full size stroller and extra baggage for baby gear.
This time around I'd like to save some $$ and go with a mid size SUV, crossover, or fullsize car. Is this doable?
I'm willing to squeeze and sacrifice comfort for the short trip to and from airport. As those are the only legs of the trip that I'm concerned about. I know we all fit in my Passat or my moms Camry for everyday (to and from parks) travel. Just not sure how much smaller/cheaper SUVs fit. what's been your experience?? TIA!!

What I have noticed is that some of the medium suvs/crossovers have a real small area behind the seat. As you look you might want to pay attention to the cargo area size.
