Help me decide on a new play system for my kids

Definitely xbox 360 with kinnect and with more than 4gb memory.

I have heard there are some major issues with the way xbox 1 will work.

Something else to note, I didn't like xBox as you had to pay to play online vs. play online with just your internet connection with Play Station. That changes with the new systems where you will have to pay to play with the Playstation 4.

Playstation Plus is still a way better benefit than Xbox Live. PSPlus will still get you the free games, heavy discounts, and other perks besides just playing online. Nearly every one on the friends list has PSPlus just because of how good it is. And it carries over to the Vita games (most which can be played through the PS3). Many of the titles being released for PS3 now are considered cross-buy. You purchase the PS3 version and get the Vita version free. And most of those games can be cloud saved for easy portability. You cloud save it on the PS3, and head out the door with Vita to continue the game right where you left off.

RROD is still a huge issue with the 360's even if they decided to call it a new name. They still have an issue of overheating. I know people who have gone through 3 or 4 360's, and my boyfriend had to replace his original fat PS3 after 6 years. The slim one has been going strong since 2010, and it's our central entertainment. We live too far from the big city to get over the air channels and cable is out of the question.

Sony did not drop the PS2 after the PS3 launch. They supported the system for a very long time, and even made the system until of last year.

The story of the original Xbox -
Xbox's successor, the Xbox 360, was launched in November 2005. The Xbox was soon discontinued beginning with Microsoft's worst-performing market, Japan, in 2005. Other countries would follow suit in 2006.[8] The last Xbox game in Europe was Xiaolin Showdown released in June 2007, and the last game in North America was Madden NFL 09 released in August 2008. Support for out-of-warranty Xbox consoles was discontinued on March 2, 2009. Support for Xbox Live on the console ended on April 15, 2010.[6]

If you want to go for a system now, then I'd suggest going with Sony PS3. You will still be able to get support and new games for it for at least the next few years. As your children get older and have more input about what they want, you can upgrade to one of the newer consoles. At that time they may be more interested in online play and other features that might not be suitable right now.

OP, thanks for starting this thread! I am in the same boat! I know nothing about this stuff. My 11 y/o has been asking forever for a PS3. He currently has the wii and PS2. I just don't know what to get. You all seem to prefer the xbox over the PS3. And I don't know if I should try to get the PS4 for xmas. Or just get the PS3. (or xbox!!!)

Someone said something about watching the amazon prime movies thru the xbox, can you do that with the PS3 also?

I had no idea!

Anymore opinions or advice?

Any advice on how to get a hold of a PS4 for xmas? After the initial release will there be lots more available for xmas? I'm on the wait list for amazon, but that's as far as I've gone to attempt to get one!

PS4 is going to be hard to come by for this holiday season. On another board, some one was mentioning that if they don't get pick up their pre-order within the first 24hrs, they will have to wait for the second shipment in February. This was with Gamestop. Pretty much all stores have been selling out of their pre-order numbers as soon as they're allotted to them. That's been happening since early this summer.

On the other hand, xbox preorders are available every where. It's like 100:1 ratio on preorders. No one wants the xbox one (and for good reason too, look at the amount of dead consoles on launch with the 360). Microsoft decided to jump the gun on Sony and push out an incomplete system a year before it was supposed to launch.

As for the games available at launch, there won't be too many exclusives for either system. Many will still be available for the PS3 and PS4, plus the library on the PS3 is massive. Expect a few kinks and bugs to be worked out in the first year or so, and then get the system. We play a lot of party games (4 players or more), and there isn't enough games announced to pick up the new system just yet.

I know you said you have a wii, but have you considered the wii u. We are a tech family and have the following game consoles in our house PS3, XBOX 360, Wii U and Wii. My DS 7 loves the wii u the most and is great because it is backwards compatible and can play all the wii games you currently have. The new xbox and playstation are not going to be backwards compatible. Microsoft is stating that over 100 games will be released after the new console comes out over the next three years but if this is like the original xbox a lot of those games towards the end were mostly sports games. My guess sony will last about that long with the ps3's as well.

What's the differences between the Wii and Wii U I thought they were kinda the same, the Wii U was just portable? Gosh, I'm so clueless!!!

I was just helping a friend with this - we looked for xbox one preorders and they are sold out everywhere.
I have to admit I was shocked at the price of them too! $550? For a 6 and 8 year old, I would go with the 360.

The Wii U is like 3 Wii's smooshed together in power. It's not portable, but it has a tablet like controller for added gameplay. I think the tablet allows for playing on the go, but it's not that advance. Games are hardly released for it, and most developers have backed out because it's so under powered compared to the other two current consoles. Almost all games are exclusively made by Nintendo titles. Now I will say that Nintendo does make some pretty good games, and their top titles are generally their own, and sales are comparable to other top titles on the other systems. That's the wave Nintendo has been riding since the beginning. They started to fallout of favor with 3rd party developers after the gamecube.

So I won't regret a PS3 purchase a few months from now?

I doubt it. I want to get a PS4 just because it's new and shiny kind of thing, and it will be awesome to have a system at launch, but the launch titles aren't exciting for me. Some of the ones scheduled to release in the next year are more enticing. And some of them are designed just to show off the power of the system. Now the cross between the Vita and PS4 games is going to be awesome. The Vita just updated last night, and now it has the functionality to control the PS3 through the internet. It can remotely turn it on and access games from the harddrive, and even access the external harddrive.

I think by the next holiday season, both systems will be more popular. Just because there will be more titles for various genres.
