Well the baby is nearly due. Its a boy. I need help choosing between two names. Both are Indian names. Our last names starts with the Letter B and there will be no middle name.

The first is Nirav pronounced Neeruv [ruv like luv] this means silent
The second is Niket pronounced Neekayt this means homely [in our culture it mostly means a person who is very much in love with his family]

So which sound better. Do any of the two have a potential to be shortened to a weird nickname or do any of these have any hidden slang or something?

Opinions?

I'm thinking I like Nirav the best. I like the meaning and the sound.

I would think people would shorten Niket to Nick.

As far as someone pronouncing it correctly, I would go with Nirav. I have a non-so-popular name and I spent my entire childhood, and a good amount of time today, telling people how to pronounce it.

Well I wouldn't name my child Homely - so I voted for the first one - lol

I agree but I like that the second one could be made into the nickname of Nick if he wanted as a kid.

Why would you even consider naming a child something that means "homely"?:confused3

In my culture, names have meaning too and we take it very seriously. I would never name my kid homely. Isn't there one for beautiful or genius or successful?

"Not attractive or good-looking: a homely child.
Lacking elegance or refinement: homely furniture.
Of a simple or unpretentious nature; plain: homely truths.
Characteristic of the home or of home life: homely skills."

answers.com gave these definitions of homely. Look at the third and fourth definitions. It is possible in the OP's culture, homely means one of those, and not how most of us would define homely.

Actually yes homely in my culture is more of attached to the family and not inelegant or anything like that. It mostly is a word to describe someone who puts family above other things.

Looks like Nirav leads for now. Just a quick question. If you did not know the pronunciation how would you pronounce Nirav?

I really like the second one, but nobody's going to pronounce either of them correctly. Unless you live in Eastern Europe, which is where those names sound like they come from.

I really like the names Aleksandr and Sergei, but I don't know if I'll ever give those names to my hypothetical future children, because the pronounciation would just get butchered.

I chose Niket:love:
OP if I am understanding it correctly -the homely meaning isn't the english one of ugly...but one who likes the home life. I think it will be the easier for people to pronounce, and Nic could be substituted.

I love that you are using traditional names...I used one from our culture and have had many questions about my son's name-I give the englis equivlent and then people are receptive.

Best of luck with your pregnancy and impending birth.

I definitely wanted names from my culture but easily pronounceable. I have a long last name so wanted short first names. My DS5 also has an Indian name and once I tell it to people they usually pronounce it properly.
