Help me decide - computer related..

That sounds good, Dan - and the price is attractive to me - but is a Celeron processor a good one? :confused3

100% WONDERFUL if you surf the net, word process, do light photo stuff --- things like that. You WOULDN'T want it for video gaming, video editing, and other super processor related tasks, like CAD.

Now see - I have a nephew who does computer repairs and what-have-you and he told me to go with a Toshiba, where another family member told me absolutely not! That's why I'm asking for suggestions here - I'm so darn confused.. :confused3
I have a Toshiba laptop (a few years old) and other than the battery not holding a charge like it did when it was new, it's been OK.

What you have to look at with the Toshiba's is that the lower end models (least expensive) are not actually made by Toshiba - they are made by another company and branded as Toshiba. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but the "real" Toshiba's are of a higher quality, but cost more. Like anything, in general, you get what you pay for, but that's not to day the low end models are bad.

(My Toshiba is one of the low end models - made by Compal and branded as Toshiba.)

Use www.cnet.com to read their reviews of any model you are considering or to search for highly rated models.

If you are looking for an inexpensive desktop, check out www.tigerdirect.com - they have a section with reconditioned/refurbished/overstock desktops at decent prices. They are not the latest greatest hardware, but many of them are IBM desktops that are coming off leases from large companies and have been treated well.

I bought one of these for my kids and it worked well.

We have 2 toshiba laptops and 1 Dell laptop, and 1 Gateway. I can't imagine why anyone would have told you to stay away from a Toshiba..sure they didn't say Compact? We've got lots of computer guru's in our family, and not a one has ever had a bad thing to say about Toshiba's. My brother worked for NCR as a repairman since back when computers took up whole rooms, and he had nothing bad to say. If your nephew is a computer whiz, he might be better to help you with the buying. Toshiba gets great reviews.

I personally would never buy another laptop, where I couldn't sit and try out the keyboard (and I wouldn't get a Celeron..I prefer the chip made for laptops, that stays cooler..I thought I had read Cereron was not a preferred chip for laptops). The Dell is ok, but it's heavy, and I hate hate the keyboard (I used it for several hours at a time when I used to do craft fairs and brought the computer with me to personalize items). The Dell laptop itself has been fine, but the Toshiba is a lot more comfortable for longer term. I would never have a laptop as a main computer, but for dragging it around the Toshiba is sweet.

I personally would get a desktop for the lake (or wherever you'll be using it the most, since you prob would be using it a lot and it's more comfortable..my girlfriend just got a great Gateway from Office Depot that was really loaded with harddrive (160 gig) and memory(1024) and an awesome flat monitor, way better than the cheap one Dell offers with their inexpensive machines..tried to price her out a Dell, and this was far better with what it had, and a better price than she could get direct from Gateway) and a very inexpensive laptop for dragging back and forth from Florida, since you'll prob just be using it more for email. But I would still try out the keyboard first...if you hate it, you won't use it much. I went to Circuit City and CompUSA and tried them all..they have them all lined up.
---------------------------------------

Okay - let me see if I can clarify.. The whole kit and kaboodle that I'm using right now will go up to the lake and stay there.. It should be okay for what I'll need there - surfing the internet; emails; clip art and photos for the scrapbooking; etc.. If need be, I can uninstall some of the programs I have on here that I don't use that often and just reinstall them as needed..

Now - that would leave me with no computer for down here.. My choices are: another desk top; a lap top (which I really would like for when I'm in Florida next year); or both..

On a lap top, I would prefer to spend less than $1000 - if possible.. Not sure what I would be willing to spend on a desk top..

The main complaint about Toshiba was their telephone support - but then I've heard horror stories about Dell too.. My nephew thinks Toshibas are a good computer, but then again, he's so knowledgable, he would never have to call for telephone support whereas I would.. I've heard good and bad about Gateway desk tops.. My stepdaughter has had a Gateway for awhile now (a few years) and I don't recall her having any problems with it..

I do have to go over towards Circuit City this week so maybe I'll go in and see what's what..

DD's Dell lap top is fairly heavy - are the Toshibas noticeably lighter?

The M Processor (mobile) is specifically designed for laptops. At 6 1/2 pounds, the 130 is a midweight, low-priced. With a $1,000 budget, almost double what priced above, you can build a much better equipped and designed PC, whether laptop or desktop, with obviously a premium for the laptop. A thousand today can get a fairly high end desktop, short of gaming and CAD.

I didn't realize that celeron also had a m processor. I still prefer to not get a celeron. I'm assuming this same computer is available with a Pentium. I prefer a bigger screen (I love my Toshiba screen..it's the one that looks like glass..can't think of the name of it) and still have it be light and although I have a Dell laptop, I prefer to try it in advance, and wouldn't get one again without doing that..which she can now that we have a Dell store in the area.
As far as Toshiba help..nope, we've never had to call, the computer has never had a problem...even the older Toshiba. The Dell has had a recall, and they said they would send the part..they never did, and we had no problems with it, so I didn't pursue it. We've got a couple Dell desktops too..and as with any of our computers..phone help is hit or miss..the desktops have had things go bad under the warrenty, so I have called for those (keyboards, mouses and monitors).

And in spite of how much I love my Toshiba..I still wouldn't want it to be my main computer.

I would go for the lap top. I have had five Dell Laptops, four of which are still functioning, Two have had power supplies blow, one under warranty and one not which I replaced. I must say Dell's Support has gone down hill quickly. And their warranty which used to be three years is quickly approaching the point where it expires soon after it arrives from DELL. it also looks as DELL is taking longer to assembe and ship these units, where now you can go get the HP, Toshiba, etc at the Local CompUSA and Such.

Get the laptop you want that will do what you want. base systems are pretty much configured and tested by 1000's of others who bought before. Once you start custom configuring units is when you get problems. My Advice is that you will get used to the keyboard and pointer device quickly, and response time improvement will compensate for keyboard. Install or make sureAnti Virus software which includes Pop-up and Malware blocking and be done with it. The only problem you will have is getting and installing drivers for your pre Windows XP Scanner and Printer. Attaching these devices are now polluting your environment and may give problems requiring calls to tech support.

My son who is in college, ( Sorry no DIS Standard insert IVY League Brags or ex gifted program brags) spilled beer on his Dell 1150 with a PIV 2.2 Ghz processor. We replaced it with an HP 415 Something with a Cerlon M360. He claims the Graphics are better and plays DVD a little better than the PIV. So I would add Gasp HP to your list also.

Message is Kiss, Keep It Simple Stupid. No Added features, No Port Replicators, and you will have increased your chances for fewer problems

A Pentium is available, as is a larger screen, for more money. From the OP, I was picking something as a low cost alternative to repairing a very old PC. And for a thousand bucks, a pretty respectable laptop can be had, or a very respectable desktop.

But where is the fun in that LOL.

A base computer is nice..for a short period of time. And I disagree that you will get used to a keyboard in no time at all. Some are miserable. The OP does scrapping..and I assume has a few programs open at a time. I believe she likes to Dis at the same time. That takes memory (having a lot of stuff open..and if you have a new computer with more stuff, you tend to do that) Graphics and photos are memory hogs. Get the basic amount of memory and it won't be long before she'll be longing for more. And it costs quite a bit more in a laptop to add memory and hdd after the fact. Nothing wrong with an HP, as long as it wasn't a Compact when it started out..that's the only brand (compact) that just about everyone told me to stay away from.
That said, everyone has their own experience and trials and errors. I work on my computer about 8 hours everyday and play for a few more. I'm fussy about the feel and the workings. Maybe the OP will be less so. She's smart..I'm sure she'll try some out. I believe she said her DD or sil has a laptop..and I bet they have advice too. She has a nephew who is involved with computers..more advice. You're right Dan, if she just wants to get the minimum, which will be a ton better than what she has, in speed etc, what you posted will be fine.

C. Ann, you don't even need tech support for your laptop. You have a guarantee 24'7 tech support. You've got the DIS baby. :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Toshiba is a lot lighter than Dell and HP. : ;)
