Hi I'm hoping for some opinions on this one! We have plans to go Disneyland next year for the first time ever. We have been to Disney World many times and love it, but we have always wanted to see Walt's first park! We made plans to go in October for the Halloween festivities, but just learned that the Diamond Celebration is being extended through Sept next year. My question is, as the first, and possibly only trip to DLR, which would you recommend? We have been to Disney World for Halloween and it was fabulous! From what I have seen and read, DLR goes all out - including changing up some rides like Space Mountain... I'm not sure how I feel about not riding Space Mountain as Space Mountain... just looking for thoughts and advice please - it will be a short trip, just my husband and I. Thanks in advance! :)

Go for Halloween in October. The 60th stuff is already getting old. DL is awesome at Halloween but I must say this Halloween has been a bit off. Too much 60th stuff and not enough Halloween. Later in the month of October in 2016 the 60th stuff will be cleared out and DL should be back to DL Halloween awesome!

I vote for Halloween, even though I suspect that both the Paint the Night parade and Disneyland Forever fireworks will still be going on in some capacity even beyond 9/5/16.

As for Halloween Time, there are only 2 rides with overlays -- Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Haunted Mansion Holiday. The bulk of the Halloween décor is on Main Street and in Frontierland. One large area of Halloween fun and decor in Frontierland (Big Thunder Ranch) is leaving forever after January 10th, and I don't know if Disney has any plan in mind to relocate it/rename it/replace it. There is a strong possibility that next year could be the year when California Adventure gets back into the Halloween swing of things, and that the hard ticket Halloween Party could possibly move back to that park for a year or two (while construction is taking place on Star Wars Land and the Rivers of America are drained), but we won't find that out until next year (anywhere from May to July)..

I think so many things are going for a closure on Jan 10th that I would lean towards Halloween but understand it is a bit of an unknown factor what (if anything) could change by the next Halloween time, and infuringatly DLR leaves it really late to make announcements about their events

The 60th is happening for almost a year and a half, and the nighttime entertainment will probably last beyond that time.

Thanks for the responses so far! My husband is really pushing for Halloween as well, so that might be the way we go. I was really on team Diamond, hahaha. I just thought it might be nice to see Disneyland without the Halloween overlay, hence going earlier for Diamond instead. Is the Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy really different from regular Space Mountain? In a good way? I don't know why I'm so bummed about this, I just really love original Space Mountain and feel like this will disappoint me. If the party is indeed moved over to California Adventure, does that change a lot of things? (I know no one knows if this will happen or not, just wondering about parades, fireworks, character meets if it were to switch) We are both big into character meets, are there any rare/different characters out for Halloween vs. everyday?

Were you responding to me? I realize that, but the OP will not be coming back within that year and a half.

Yes, I was. What I mean is that, by going during Halloween Time in 2016, the OP will very likely get to experience both Halloween Time AND the nighttime entertainment for the 60th, which is likely to last for years in some capacity. Whereas, going only during the 60th (prior to Halloween Time) means only the 60th, and not the added bonus of Halloween Time. The blue bunting and lamppost décor may come down after 9/5/16, but I would hope that those elements are not the main reason for someone's trip. They are pretty, but not the reason to make a trip.

If the party moves back to DCA -- and we won't know if that's happening until next year sometime -- it would likely mean all new party-specific entertainment. There would probably be no Halloween Screams fireworks, but there could be a Halloween World of Color. There would be characters in Halloween attire and some lesser-seen characters (such as Hades) wherever the party was held.

I think it's highly, highly unlikely that the Paint the Night parade and the Disneyland Forever fireworks would disappear after 9/5/16. I don't know about World of Color - Celebrate, but the other shows I am certain will stick around in some capacity, though possibly on a more reduced schedule than what is taking place right now. That's why I think that by going during Halloween Time of 2016 you'd get the best of both worlds -- Halloween and 60th -- possibly minus the random Diamond Anniversary bunting and Castle décor.

What is so special about diamond? What will be taken down in oct? Lol i thought going in oct wed get both!

This year you will, for sure -- the 60th is still going strong all this year, so October will be a blend of pumpkins and diamonds! In 2016, when the OP is going, the choice is to go before Halloween Time begins, and before 9/5/16, or during Halloween Time. Since the Diamond Celebration is now scheduled to last at least through 9/5/16, that means that some things could end after 9/5/16. I think the most likely things to end after that point would be the décor (on lampposts and on the Castle, for example), or maybe some of the food items and pieces of merchandise would no longer be sold. The jury is out on World of Color - Celebrate, as that has received some lukewarm responses. But I think that Paint the Night and Disneyland Forever will still be part of the Disneyland nighttime entertainment even beyond 9/5/16. That's my guess.

I think it also depends on when you are thinking of going during the "Diamond" Celebration. Depending on when you in 2016, there might be other seasonal activities occurring during your visit.

Ghost Galaxy isn't quite as massive an overlay as Haunted Mansion Holiday, so for the most part you're still riding Space Mountain (at least to me). They change the music track and add video projections throughout the ride, but if you seated towards the back of the ride vehicle you won't see all/as much of the projections (they seem more timed to the front of the vehicle).

I think now is when to go, you have Diamond and Halloween going on (it looks beautiful!!!) and after/on Jan 10 a bunch of things will be closing so go before.that date.
