Another person here with a stubborn FIL. We went 2 years ago. Dad has deterioted discs in 3 sections and other back issues. We knew he couldn't walk around Disney. So we looked around and rented one ahead of time. We told him about 1 month before we left. He was furious. Telling him ahead of time gave him a chance to vent.
When we got there told him he didn't have to use it but it's there. He begrudgling went with mom to pick it up from the front lobby. He ended up using it all week and having a great time. There is no way he could have done it with out it. He talked to other peopleon them and started to feel less self-conscious. Two years later he still hasn't had surgery and even with the scooter Disney is out of the question. He has gotten a brace that seems to help him.
My nephew's mother refused to use one and ended up having to bail after 1 day and spent most of the rest of the vacation in the room.
For what it's worth we rented from Walker and were very pleased. They drop it right off at your resort (which I believe there are other vendors that also do this) and pick it up.
