Another weekend trip on the horizon...well, 104 days away, anyway!

My b day is Sept 2 (Labor day) and I would love to go to WDW that weekend. DH wants Poly, but I really want to just relax and not run aroud the parks much (so why pay for monorail?)

I'm leaning towards WL because of the closeness to the other resorts (we want to eat at Ohana's, Chef Mickey's) and the boat ride to MK. I was quoted a total of 301.00- AP standard rate for 2 nights. AKL is 317.00, so the price isn't much different. I just LOVE all the pictures of AKL (and my video from the travel channel) . Also, thinking about sending my DS (age 4)to Cub's den or Simba's and spending time at the resort and pool.

Please give your opinions!!!

Susy, I have stayed at the WL and AKL. Both resorts are lovely. And both resorts have something unique to offer. If you want to hang out in the MK area, the WL is the place for you. However, if you want a different experience than any other resort, and you want to just relax and not do much of anything but pamper yourself, then the AKL is the place for you.

Simba's Cubhouse at the AKL is great. My daughter begs to stay there every night of our AKL stay (we have stayed there a couple times now and her begging is always the same!). I have some Simba's photos posted here: My Simba's Cubhouse Photos. The AKL has my second favorite WDW pool (the BWV pool is probably my favorite). The activities at the AKL pool, however, are the best that I have ever experienced at WDW. My kids had a lot of fun (find-the-toys-at-the-bottom-of-the-pool games, hula-hoop-at-the-pool's-edge games, etc.).

I have stayed at the WL once and plan on staying there this June/July. I have visited AKL and it was very nice, however, I really really liked the WL. The pool was nice, the food court (Roaring Fork) was really nice, and the rooms were magnificent! Go with the WL. I guarantee you'll enjoy it there!

I have stayed at both.. and love them both... (they were both designed by the same man so they are similar) They both have lots of nooks and cranies to look around in. Both have wonderful fire places to sit at... Both have nice resturant. Jiko and artist point. Family style resturants.. Boma and Whispering Canyon and snack bar type, Roaring Fork and Mara. If you are just lounging around the resort I would choice Animal Kingdom lodge and just soak up the atmoshere there. It is wonderful to look at all the animal from all the nooks and even from the hot tub... The only thing I didn't like about it is that is was so far from most of the other parks but if you are not going it would be fine... The wilderness lodge is great too though, so either would be great and that would be closer to the Poly etc..

We have stayed at both the AKL and WL. Here's a comparison for you, I copied from an old post of mine.

The Pool-The pool is much bigger at the AKL. The AKL has 2 hot tubs(as does the WL) but one of them is larger, about twice the size. Then there is another hidden hot tub about the size of the ones at WL. They both have a water slide that's about the same. They both have pool bars too.

The *food court*. The AKL, Mara, is run differently then the Roaring Forks at the WL. At the Mara, it's much larger and you order your food and then they bring it out to your table, either inside or out. They have a bigger menu then I remeber the RF having, I think. They have a lot of desserts and bakery products as well, great chocolate chip cookies-lol. In the sitting area there is a TV that plays Disney movies too. We ate at the mara alot and really enjoyed it. At the Roaring Forks you order your food then they call your # and you go and get it. RF is much smaller then the Mara.

The rooms- Are very similiar in size and design, there are no major differences.

The view- We had a courtyard at the WL and a savannah at the AKL. Both were great and equal in their own ways. At the AKL you can have a view of animals, there are 3 different savannahs. We were on Zebra Trail overlooking the Arusha Rock savannah, we saw Zebra, Kudu, Giraffe and Ankole. At the WL we has a courtyard view and had a view of the waterfall, pool and lake. We watched the Electric light parade every night and could also see the geyser go off. At night we left our sliding door open to hear the waterfall.

Then lobby- The WL lobby apears larger then the AKL, not sure if it actually is or not. Both are beautiful, the AKL had more little paths and decorative bridges in it. They also have a suspended bridge that 's on the 4th floor. Oh the major difference is the lobby is on the 3rd floor at the AKL, it took some getting used to since our room was on the 2nd floor and we went up to the lobby. Different but no big deal-lol. The lobby at the AKL also has a lot of overlook areas onto differernt levels. you can look down onto the bar and Boma restaurant. They both had TV's with videos. They are both beautiful in their own ways.

Transportation- The major difference here is that the AKL is all busses. I worried about this but was proven there was no need to. The busses were great, in 2 weeks the longest we waited was 15 minutes and that was only 2 times. The rest of the times it was FAST. The longest ride was to the MK and it took about 15 minutes. They were rarely crowded even the week after Easter and we didn't share any busses with other resorts. Now I have heard that WL is now sharing busses with Fort Wilderness and people that came back recently complained the busses were a mess. They do have a boat to the MK at the WL and you can also take a boat to the Contemporary Resort. If you do that you can then jump on the monorail to Epcot. Then you'd only have to take the busses to MGM and AK. Hopefully they will go back to not sharing busses at the WL soon. The AKL busses don't share with any other resort, which was nice and cuts down the ride times too.

Both resorts have child care and fitness centers. The AKL also has a spa.

Overall I fell in love with the AKL, I thought it was just wonderful and I didn't want to leave. We even went back to the WL to visit and compare-lol. Even though I loved the WL and thought it coould NEVER ever be replaced as my #1, the AKL did it, I was very surprised.

I worried so much before we went and I shouldn't have the AKL was NOT a disappointment.

I hope this wasn't too confusing to read! Have a great trip!!

Right now I'm leaning towards AKL. I really want to eat at Jiko and I love the pictures of the pool area and the rooms appeal to me more, as does the african theme.

AK is also our favorite park!!!!

We will have our car, but would probably take the bus to AK, since it's so close!

on Monday morning (labor day) we can check out and go to MK for my b-day.

when we were there last week. It was the most relaxing atmosphere (and I say this having two children). The pool is fantastic and especially the lifeguards -- never worried for a second that my girls weren't safe.
We used Simba's Clubhouse when we were there and my girls loved it. We didn't go anywhere outside of the hotel while they were there -- just had some adult time and a quiet dinner at Boma (our second one in a row, the first was with the girls the night before). The hour for Simba's are 4:30 to midnight and it is $8/hr/child. They order meals at 3 different times 5:45, 6:45, and 7:45. They also have an ice cream bar for snack. There were 3 women working the night our girls went and only 6 children -- so plenty of attention.

But, my advice would be to use your car to drive to the Animal Kingdom if you have it. Yes, the bus ride is short -- but since the buses come every 15 minutes or so you'd actually be at the park sooner if you drove -- just literally a couple of minutes (this is what we did -- used the bus for all the other parks).

Thanks for your very detailed report. After 4 stays at WL, we're trying AKL this fall-your descriptions were great!:)
