Help me buy DVC!

That bag ain't free at $170+ per point.

But yes.

ROTFL, if I'm gonna have to purchase even 25 at that rate, I want all I can get, fast passes too. :).

One thing I got to thinking the other day, while I think Disney make a good strategic call in limiting resale benefits to entice people to buy at least small contract, if DVC dues go into supporting any of those benefits, could they get into lawsuit in future because certain portion of owners pay towards those benefits but don't get them. I think that would only come to play if say they used DVC dues to do a members only even but then didn't invite us "2nd class citizens" to the party even though we paid dues toward it? I can see some situations clearly do not create that issue (like discount on AP) but example of party or member lounge, if dues help support those, then it could get them in trouble in future. :(

Dean, your right on the money. I was being conservative in my savings and counting the total retail purchase and not diff like you said. I'm still not 100% sure I'm doing any retail yet, but do know I want 225 points total at SSR. I'm currently watching 200 point contracts and there are couple that I like but not going to pull trigger until I get rid of couple other timeshares this year (should be around July/August). Our next visit is planned 2019 (oh the horror, but going to beach place this year and going to D.C./Grand Canyon next year) so I've got plenty of time but I ideally do want 2018 points I can bank into 2019. I honestly never stopped to run the numbers until month ago and was kinda caught off guard at what a good financial choice it was. im paying cash for points so no financing charges.
Since you can look for a fully loaded contract, that will add to your savings value as well as allow you to consider slightly smaller contracts since you'll have more points for several years.

Even buying direct makes financial sense Eventually. Buying resale just means you are able to save more than you paid much much sooner. Buying direct for some may be the way they want to go with ability to trade into cruises and such but from what I've read, that's not as good of a use for the points. Plus, I'll be paying somewhere around 16k but if I bought direct it would cost me around 35k for same amount of points. For me, 16k easier to swallow than 35k. Plus, our vacation trend may change in 10 years so I want this to pay for itself before then (and it does well before then) in case I want to sell and get out.
Not necessarily, it depends on your benchmark. IMO, comparing to cash prices for DVC rooms is a fools comparison even using a 10-20% discount. I think comparing to what one would have spent not owning (even if off property timeshares) or to private rentals are the only reasonable benchmarks. But the added value of being on property, moving up in class from say Moderate to DVC and the kitchen options does potentially add value though that value is more personal and individual. I do feel those new to DVC often overestimate that value though.

Everything that is paid with dues is available to resale purchasers too: most notably the BLT lounge.
Everything else is paid by DVD using marketing funds, so they can decide to allow whoever they want into events or into the Epcot lounge.
About discounts, they are contracted between DVD and the parks and resorts division, so again, not something members pay and they can decide how will be intitled.
