We're gonna be at MGM for our anniversary. We were going to go to Mama Melrose's because we like cheesy italian ambience and food. We also are going to a lot of themed, kid-friendly restaurants and thought a normal restaurant would be nice.

Now we're considering sci fi. We have two kids, 5 and 2. DS5 is kind of shy and I don't think he'd like prime time but might really enjoy driving the car at sci fi. However, I heard the food is pretty spotty (to say the least). My DD2 is also pretty difficult at restaurants and might do better in the car.

I'm torn. Whaddaya think?

I would stick with Mama Melrose only because its one of our favorite WDW restaurants.

With that said, my mother took my kids to Sci Fi last year when DH and I went out for our anniversary. She said she has never seen my kids so quiet, LOL! The movies really occupied them, but they are a bit older than yours...they were 7 & 4 when they went.

The sci fi is kind of dark, so you should take that into account.
Do dark places bother your kids?...If so, stay out of the sci fi.

Also, the different cars are set up differently, so you're not necessarily in a driving like position.

On the other hand, it might be fun for little kids.

I've never been to Mama Melrose, so i can't compare for you, but if CamColt says it's good, i'm sure it is.....i trust her opinion...
we happen to love the prime time, but you're right that it would be over the head of your kids....and the food is actually only so so there...we like it for the fun of it (and because we've had the same waitress for a few years.....we're lucky, since we advance order, she knows we're coming and arranges it so we get her....lots of fun)....

Well keep in mind that they show 1950's moster flicks at the Sci-fi, which can be scary for little ones.

Kids might do better at Sci-Fi but the food is mediocre at best. Milkshake is good though. It's your basic drive-thru food so if the quality is an issue, I'd stick with Mama Melrose.

We go to Sci-Fi every trip, and it's a must do for my daughter! We find the theme very cool (you can find cheesy italian restaurants everywhere, Sci-Fi is ultimately a Disney experience). The hamburgers are great (amoung the best I ever had), but I have read that the rest of the menu leaves a little to be desired.

I don't know how "romantic" it would be for an anniversary though, but I think your kids would love it!

I haven't been to Mama Melrose's, but if you are going for an anniversary dinner then I would say to pick Mama's over Sci-Fi. We just returned from 10 days in WDW and enjoyed our lunch at Sci-Fi, but the food was just ok, and you are seated in twos, so it isn't a very "family style" place. If you are doing a bunch of other "kid-oriented" places, then I'd pick Mama's.

Congratulations and have fun wherever you dine!

Awwww,thanks!

have never been but I just switched my ps from MM to Sci Fi today...I can eat Italian anywhere but I am looking for an experience, we are not huge eaters anyway! A little entertainment at a meal to keep the kids quiet sounds HEAVENLY TO ME!!! Sit in the back seats behind the kids and smooch a little back there :love2: and the kids will be merrily eating and watching the big screen!! Happy anniversary

Based on your answers, we've pretty much decided to go with Sci fi. There's a touring plan in the UOG called 'dumbo or die in a day'. That's what we are trying to make this trip. Completely for the kids. With that in mind, we'll take them to sci fi in the hopes that they are interested in the surroundings and somewhat different atmosphere.

Maybe DD2 will watch the screen and let us eat. Did I mention she's really difficult at restaurants? When DH found out he would be sitting in front of us on benches/cars, he said, 'great, french fries on my neck will be nice.'

I decided there won't be much romance in chasing her around Mama's and trying to get her not to throw food because she is bored. Did I mention she's difficult, especially when bored? Oh yeah, I did.

Thanks for your help, it really clarified the issue!
