I am making a 3-d octopus cake for a friends baby shower. I plan on making a bundt cake and frosting it either gray (for a rock) or blue (for water) and then baking a round cake in a sportsball pan for the octopus body. Now, my problem is how to do the legs? I don't think that there is a tip big enough to do the legs with just frosting, so any ideas? I've searched and searched the interent and am finding very few pictures of octopus cakes, and none that I like. Any ideas?

Thanks, I found that picture, and the legs are the perfect size around (they used strawberry shortcake rolls) but the ends look funny where they tried to taper it. I know, I'm probably too analytical.

This one is made with rolled fondant. Have you ever used that before? It's a little tricky to work with, but if you have time to try it out a time or two, you might be able to get the look you're looking for! Stole this pic from a bakery site from England.....too bad they're not close enough to order from!

Thanks. I saw that one too, but didn't want to use fondant. Sorry, I'm such a pain, and too picky! I really do appreciate you guys looking for me though!

What about baking a rectangular cake and cutting out wiggly shapes and than attaching them as the legs and covering them with icing.

I thought about that, but then they'd be squared. I guess I could sort of chisel off the corners and then frost it? Hmm, I'm thinking that as of now, this sounds like my best bet. Now, to figure out what size and just how squiggly :rotfl:

Once you ice it if you pipe the legs, they won't be completely squared off. It will give dimension to it.

have you got a donut ring pan or a french stick mould? That might work

If you follow this advice, in light blue for example, maybe you could add M&Ms to the legs to make the suckers. You could place the suckers on one side and start with blue mini M&Ms closest to the tip and eventually use big blue M&Ms closer to the body of the Octopus.

Couldn't you cut the legs out of styrafome? Then you could do a better job tapering (as the cake will more easily crumble) and coat the whole thing in icing? Just an idea!!

What do you guys mean by pipe the legs? Sorry, I'm no professional cake decorator. I just like doing it. I do have lots of wilton tools, but have never taken the classes. Do you mean like use the star tip and pipe stars all over it?

I'll have to dig out the pictures for you. I made a snake cake for DS 2 years ago for his birthday. I baked a flat sided bundt cake, and when it cooled, cut it into 4 pieces, laid them together end to end, and frosted the whole thing together, so it was squiggly. I froze the cake before I started cutting and shaping it so it did not crumble, and then froze the pieces again before frosting.

Hahhahaha....that is adorable!
I Laughed Out Loud when I saw it!
Great Work....

(I am SOOOOO inadequate :rolleyes1 ..YIKES!)

Great job, really cute! :sunny:

Your cake looks great! Thanks for sharing the picture of how it turned out! When I first saw your post I thought it would be easy to find instructions on making an octopus cake, but I was not able to find anything on-line. Since then I've been wondering what you ended up doing! Thanks again for sharing! :sunny:

Very cute! Yes, thanks for sharing.
