Where do I start?????

First, I'm looking to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. How is it??? How does it compare to the WDW hotels????

Second, I see they offer a 6 day dining package. Does this work like the one in WDW???? Does it mean I can eat anywhere I want three meals a day????

San Diego Zoo, Legoland, Seaworld which ones do I do and how far are they from Disney land.

I'm planning on staying there for 7 or 8 days this November and have never been out west before.

How is the weather in November. I will be travelling with three children under the age of 7 if this helps.

I have so many questions. We've been to WDW at least 8 times and LOVE it. Will I be dissappointed with DL or is it as nice as WDW. Is it worth the extra money in plane fare or should I stick with WDW.

Thanks for all the help!!!

I probably won't really be answering any of your questions, but I will tell you what we are going to do. My DH and I are WDW veterans. We have been to DL once in 1994. We decided to go this year if we could find good airfare and we did ($218 rt from Hartford to LAX). We are staying in one of the hotels across the street that are in walking distance for only $62 per night. We are not staying at one of the Disney hotels because we are going back to WDW for two weeks again in Sept. We will be in CA for 7 nights and plan to do Universal and Knottsberry and we are renting a car. We did not like the shuttle to Universal last time we were there and prefer to drive ourselves. One last thing, we really enjoyed our last trip to DL even though WDW is our favorite and are really looking forward to our trip next month.'

I'm sure others will have their opinions. We stayed at the DH about 5 years ago...It was comparable to the Contemporary, IMHO.

dunno

San Diego is about 1.5 hours away, depending on traffic and how fast you drive. where you go depends on the ages of your kids. Each will take the better part of a day to do. San Diego Zoo is, well, at the end of the day, a Zoo. I very nice Zoo, but a Zoo nonetheless. Can't really compare it to legoland or SeaWorld. Given the ages of your children, they will likely vote for Legoland

I suggest visiting http://www.weather.com They have charts for temps for specific times of the year. It's likely to be anywhere from the mid-60's to low 80's

Well, disneyland is just Disneyland. Think Magic Kingdom, only much, much larger. Disneyland has some of the attractions found at MGM. California Adventure is new, so that adds some flavor of MGM Studios and Downtown Disney. There is much, much more to do at WDW when you add in all the attractions. You can do Disneyland in about 4 days at a somewhat leisurely pace. You should have time to squeeze in a jaunt to San Diego given the time you are there. May want to also consider Universal Studios.

PolyGirl,

If I were you, I'd definitely come check out DL. As a native Californian, I've obviously gone to DL more times than WDW. Even though there's only one park (and starting now, two parks), it has brought me back year after year -- I go about every other year. Here are some answers to your questions...

"First, I'm looking to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. How is it??? How does it compare to the WDW hotels????"

I've stayed at Port Orleans and OKW (my DVC home). The DL Hotel is like... none of the above. Someone mentioned it's like the Contemporary -- and I'd agree, just walking through it, it seems comparable.

If you're going to stay at the DL Hotel, ask for a room looking over Peter Pan's pool. Due to the noise level (which can be pretty noisy from time to time); I prefer the rooms that are higher up overlooking the pool. The rooms looking over the parking lot can be small and a bit dark.

Have you considered the Pacific? It's much more upscale and costs about the same, I believe -- at least in DVC points!

Of course, the Grand Californian would probably be worth at least a look while you're planning. Have you considered trying to get a "white glove" package through AMEX? Consider it if they can give you lodging at the Grand Californian.

"Second, I see they offer a 6 day dining package. Does this work like the one in WDW???? Does it mean I can eat anywhere I want three meals a day????"

I don't know anything about this. However... don't miss the opportunity to eat a meal at the Blue Bayou. Be sure to make your PS as soon as you can (I believe they start making PS at about 10 AM) so you won't be waiting in a long line at lunch/dinner time. (I suggest you go there at lunch time.) The Blue Bayou is located in Orleans Square -- IN the Pirates of the Carribean! It has great ambiance and superb food. It's expensive -- but well worth it. For other meals, try Tony Roma's just outside of the DL entrance. They have terrific barbeque dinners at a great price. Also, don't forget IHOP (also right outside of the DL gates) for a great breakfast. Both can get crowded -- but then again, so are the park restaurants!

"San Diego Zoo, Legoland, Seaworld which ones do I do and how far are they from Disney land."

Personally, I'd be sure to take the kids to Seaworld and the Zoo. The SD Zoo is a world renown zoo, having a natural habitat for its animals and covering a huge area. Seaworld is probably a lot like what you see in Orlando (I don't know since I haven't been to the one in Orlando). You might also want to check out some of the neat activities in Balboa Park. They have a laserium and other interesting points of interest. There's also an Animal Park in/near San Diego. If you get really adventurous you might want to check out Tijuana, Mexico -- just south of the border. Just don't drive your rental car in there or it will get stolen. Park on the US side of the border and walk in. You'll find great deals on jewelry, pottery and things like heavy blankets. Be careful of where you eat -- don't eat anything from the street vendors, for sure. Old Town in San Diego is another fun shopping/eating expedition -- 'though not as inexpensive as Mexico.

"How is the weather in November. I will be travelling with three children under the age of 7 if this helps."

We were there the day after Thanksgiving in '99 and found it to be great weather for layering. It was crisp in the morning and warm to hot in the afternoon and cool in the evening. We wore about three layers each: a tee shirt, a sweatshirt and a windbreaker every day. It worked. We wound up putting our jackets in the locker every day. If you get a locker, get one early (before lunch). They tend to go quickly around the holidays.

"We've been to WDW at least 8 times and LOVE it. Will I be dissappointed with DL or is it as nice as WDW. Is it worth the extra money in plane fare or should I stick with WDW."

Of course, that's a matter of opinion. I think DL is almost a carbon-copy of the Magic Kingdom at WDW -- but it's MUCH better -- even though it doesn't have the Alien Encounter (which I think is really fun). "It's a Small World" will be a kick for you to see since you're used to the one at WDW. If you like older roller coasters, you'll love the Matterhorn. Be sure to ride it at night! That's a blast! Of course, I still go to WDW for the full week to 2 week vacation because there's SO MUCH MORE there to enjoy. If I could choose to have WDW closer to us than DL, I probably would. (No small wonder that we're DVC members.) Still, there's something to be said for the nostalgia at DL... knowing that it all started there and imagining how Walt must have been so excited thinking about the future there.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy! I'm sure you'll have fun!

Like another post-er, I can tell you what we decided and have found out.
The hotels "across the street" are BARGAINS, compared to any Disney resorts. (Incl WDW)
With AAA discount, we are staying at a three diamond hotel for $54 a night, Memorial week! (Anaheim Desert Inn)
We really wanted park hoppers. Currently, the ONLY way to have this option is to stay on-site at DL. Even packages with the Good Neighbor hotels, booked through WDTC, do not include the hopper feature. (EE yes, hopper no.)
I just priced out DL packages for the last week of May, THREE nights, the day hopper passes, flex feature, etc, for two adults is..... $1,002! And that is WITH the DC discount!
Forget it. Park hopping isn't THAT important. Not when I know we can stay in a nice hotel, literally right across the street for $54 a night. We spent very little time in our hotel in WDW.
And staying on-site only two nights isn't that much better. Package prices for that time, 2 adults, with the DC discount, and minus the trip insurance, 3 day hoppers, city view room:
DL Hotel & Paradise Pier: $716
Grand CA: $786

This trip we are also visiting Universal, Wildlife Park and a very quick trip into Tijiana. We have been to the zoo three times, Wildlife Park and Tijuana twice prior to our upcoming trip.
If you have any questions on those, feel free to ask.
But my suggestion to anyone visiting the zoo and the Wildlife Park, is to join the zoo membership prior to going. It will save money and is a tax deduction also! :D

I think that this all-encompassing post may answer some of your questions - plus some you didn't even know you had!

It's a comparison of WDW and DL, from this board:

Disneyland vs. WDW

My wife and I made our first trip to DL last summer -- after years of loving WDW and enjoying the Grand Floridian -- and stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. The hotel is nice, but nothing extravagant. Think an upscale Ramada, circa 1975.

That said, the pool and restaurants are VERY good -- Hook's Point is among the best on property, imho, and Goofy's Kitchen is a superb character meal. Plus, you simply can't beat the convenience of being only footsteps away from the monorail.

FYI: You might want to check out Paradise Pier (formerly the Pan Pacific) which is nearby, on property, convenient to the monorail -- and was just renovated.

Wherever you stay, request a HIGH floor. We were on the second floor of the DH, and had ZERO view. We overlooked the roof of the entry awning.

Finally, let me just add this: we LOVE Disneyland, and believe it in many ways superior to the Magic Kingdom at WDW. The park is smaller, the design is more meticulous, and the execution of the rides is, in many instances, MUCH better. It's got Walt's touch all over it :D.

Enjoy!
