Hey there. DH and I are passing your way for a medical residency interview the first week of January (at SUNY Stonybrook). Sell me on where you live!

What do I need to see to get a feel for your city? While he's interviewing, I'm going to cruise around town, because we have to eventually rank these places and may end up there for at least 4 years!

Thanks in advance!

I'm in Westchester county but have spent a lot of time on the island. All I can tell you is, honey, you'd better get used to traffic. :confused3

I think there are a lot of very beautiful places on Long Island, like around the shores. There are a lot of people on this board from there so I am sure they can help you better.

My first husband was from Floral Park. I just remember the traffic on the parkways and expressway. Oy!

If you're going to be in Stonybrook, you're not that close to NYC. But if you had a free day while you're there, you could take the train in - and you'll be able to see all the great things manhattan has to offer.

There are outlets in Riverhead (Tanger) if you like to shop. Depending on what time of year you go and if you are bringing kids, there is a waterpark in riverhead and an aquarium.

Also out east there are tons of wineries and tastings. Its a fun thing to do.

I'm from Nassau county, probably about 45 min from Stonybrook, so I'm not sure of specifics of the area. Have fun!

oops, i just saw that you're going in jan. guess the waterpark is out ;)

My DD graduated from LIU Southampton which is being converted to a SUNY Stonybook campus.

Personally, I hated having to drive out there. Get a map and figure out ways to bypass the Long Island Expressway otherwise you'll be sitting in traffic whenever you want to travel on the island.

The cost of living on LI is $$$$$$$$$$. My son-in-law also went to LIU and did an internship out there after they graduated. He rented a converted hotel room and had to move out in May when the monthly rate skyrocketed to $3000. (Summer rentals in the Hampton area are obscenely expensive.)

Wow, I am happy for you. I answered your thread before and told you about the university. I really dont want to say what town I live in, but you can pm me. Maybe I could give you some kind of little tour if you dont want to go around by yourself. If you go yourself you can go into the town of Stony Brook. Its quaint with lots of high end shops, sorry I dont shop there. You can take a little drive down 25A and end up in Port Jefferson, both Stony Brook and Port Jefferson have a harbor and Port Jefferson also has a ferry that takes you right to Bridgeport Conn. The mall is past Stony Brook in Lake Grove. I could tell you about some of the local churches of different religions. On the road to Stony Brook you can find the Church on the Sound and ? sorry I forgot the name of that one, but they have a montessori school attached to it. That is Nicholls road, then you can wander oh, I mean sit in the traffic on Route 347 and pass the likes of the mega movies, marshalls, etc, friendlys restraunt, There is a quaint little town St. James, Very small though. You can make a left at the Toys R us and you can go straight. At the next light you can make a left which is Route 25, here you will find the towns of centereach, selden and the mall with macys etc, ultimate tackiness. But they do have alot to do at the university as far as cultural events too. They are home to the seawolves, basketball, football etc. Its really not too bad living here. The beach is pretty. Things are a little more expensive. We had some of the drs. come to our church when they did their residencies for a few years too. One was doing aids research and one was doing pediatric stuff. I think the one couple was from ohio too, like you. Well, good luck and you can pm me if you want.

Actually, the LIE isn't as bad as it used to be. They did a lot of work on it, widening the road in a number of areas and improving the entrances/exits. My MIL still lives in Syosset and where I used to always take the Northern State Pkwy to avoid the LIE, we almost always take the LIE now with little trouble.

Of course, rush hour is another thing.
