HELP!! Infected!/AKA Don't trust McAfee-Updated

I just had the same virus, twice. The first time Mcafee removed it ( after paying $90), the second time I figured out how to use the malewarebytes. When I initially tried to use it, the virus wouldn't let me open it when I downloaded it. The second time I found that you have to download the program from a different computer, put it on a flash drive or cd and then install it on your computer. You also have to change the file name when you download it, since the virus will recongnize the name and block it.

Okay gang, I have this one, or a very similar one on my old laptop. I was able to use Firefox for about 15 minutes, then it hit that one too. How do you suggest I run malwarebytes.org? Should I download it from another computer onto a CD, then run it from the CD or what? It's a 4 year old laptop, BestBuy wants $200 to remove the virus, and I've already bought a new laptop.

See if you can shut it down via the task manager and then download malwarebytes. If not, download onto another pc and put on disc or thumbdrive and try running it from that. Another user suggested changing the name of the program as this virus knows malwarebytes and shuts it down.

Im not sure how much this will help, but a few weeks ago I kept getting a message that my com was badly infected with trojan, worm, viruses and spyware (I forget the exact name of the virus). I had a fake company keep popping up with ways to get rid of my problems. That was the virus!

The only thing that worked for me to rid of it, was to do a system restore.

click....

My computer
perf. and maintance
system restore (on left)

and then....

choose the date to restore back to--in sense, you are going back in time to a different day that you did not have the virus on your computer. The computer saves at certain points or you can do it manually (Im not sure what thats called--completely computer illiterate as I am:rotfl: )

Maybe that would help, I know it completely solved my problem in less than 5 minutes!:woohoo:

I have the old laptop booting up, it also has a power cord issue, you have to press the power cord ito the recepticle on the laptop. If I can get a full boot up I hae a CD made. Crossing fingers since I just maxed out the memory on it last year so it's a good unit.

Going to attempt the system restore, everything is getting a win32 error.

If you are able to access system restore, that is the first thing I would do. Take the computer back to how it was prior to getting the bug. Then, run a full antivirus scan.

Once you get back up and running, back up your important files because next time, you may have to reload the operating system.

I use AVG free. It is a very highly regarded antivirus program. I make sure that it stays current and does regular scans. I haven't had a virus issue since I started using it a few years ago.

I had AVG and got the virus the OP is talking about. When I told the tech I had AVG she said "well you got what you paid for didn't you" $208.99 later mine is fixed.

I got a new computer, it came with Norton Anti Virus installed. I had 2 or 3 viruses in the first month.....I got Comcast high speed internet, they uninstalled the Norton and installed McAfee, I got 4 or 5 viruses in the next month. I uninstalled the McAfee, made sure the Norton was gone and got AVG, that was...oh...........let me think......about 3 years ago, haven't had ANY viruses since I got AVG. I'll stick with AVG. :)

I have a question about the AVG free. Right now I'm on DH's old laptop.(Wow is this thing slow!!) He used it mainly for when he's deployed but he wants to get a new one for his upcoming deployment in February so this one will go back in the box when/if my computer gets fixed(it's not looking good right now). It had the McAfee on it but it expired a long time ago (when he got home from the last deployment it went in the box and sat there till yesterday)

How do you get the AVG for so long? I looked into it and all I'm finding is a 30 day free trial. Where do I go to get the one you guys have for the long term?

I too have the free AVG and I still have gotten this virus (the one above) 3 times and have had to "system restore" 3 times:mad: Its worked every time but its annoying....I run virus scans all the time too and I still get this sucker! I have gotten this by just clicking on certain sites.

IMO, AVG does pretty good, but things can still happen. I have had only this 1 particular virus since AVG was downloaded. So pretty good I guess.

Are you using internet explorer for web-browsing? There are security settings you can change in IE that might help close some of the "holes" that are letting this get in. Or if you are running something like firefox, you might not have the extensions and security set up correctly.

There was a thread similar to this not that long ago, someone gave a step by step of what you need to help make your surfing safer.

We use Firefox and have AVG safe search, AVG security toolbar and no script for extensions. I know at one time we had an ad blocker and something else but haven't looked for updated extensions. I know there are more available that we could use to keep our surfing safer but so far we've done pretty good.
