Help! I want to learn about DVC renting!

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the DIS boards. I'm NOT new to Disney or DVC, but I am new to doing Disney on my own!

I've been going to Disney before I could hold my own sippy cup, and most of those years I spent in DVC resorts (though the Polynesian was my first!). My grandparents are the DVC members and OKW is their home resort (my absolute favourite!).

The point I'm trying to get at is that now I'm settled into my adult life (at the grand ol' age of 28!), I want to start doing Disney on my own pence (Oh, btw I live in the UK now; I'm originally from Atlanta).

I know what DVC points are. I know that you buy them at a one-off and pay yearly dues. And, I know they are renewed every year to be used again and again. But they seem a bit more complicated than that!

However, I'm not going to buy.... I want to learn about how you rent them from someone, what the rules and regs are, and what kind of savings I can make.

Can anyone help me with this? As I'm addicted to DVC, I don't really want to resort to a Value Disney resort due to my budget.

I'd appreciate advice from the Disney gurus! :-)

Thank you!

please don't post rental dates and such on this board. your post might be edited to remove that. you can only ask for a rental on the rent/trade board (and it's important to read the stickies there as there are a number of rules to that process.)

if you don't know much about renting, you are probably better off starting with a broker like david who can walk you through the process:

http://www.dvcrequest.com/faq.htm

in general, you save money but you give up daily housekeeping and you are not dealing with disney directly. so if the DVC owner is unwilling to refund your money if you have to cancel (and most will not provide refunds) or will only accept a certain form of payment, that is what you have to deal with. also, DVC resorts generally book up much more quickly than hotels so you might need to book 11 months out to get the type of room you prefer.

edited to add: here is a link to the rent/trade board if you prefer to deal with a DVC owner directly:

Renting directly from the owner will typically be the cheaper options. However you need to do so e more leg work to find a member with the resort / points you want. If you go this route, read the "how to use these boards" on the rent forum.

Going through a broker provides you with an actual company to deal with, but ultimately they need to work with the member. But since the ember only gets the second half of payment after checkin, there is less of a chance someone pulls a shady deal. They are rare, but they do happen.

Either way, make sure you know what yo expect. Good luck and pixie dust.

We went to the DISboards forum that has posts from people wanting to sell points, bought some points, and went to the resort when the time came. Couldn't have been easier! We will definitely do it again. Great value.
