okay here are some lesser known authors that I am into...I read a lot so I keep having to find new authors:

Katie FForde: she writes british romance novels that have more "real" people.

Connie Fedderson: very humorous mystery novels similiar to Evanovitch

Then one I just started reading is Carla Neggers, romantic suspense.


I love Helen K Maxwell but they are mostly out of print.

My favs are Michael Palmer and Robin Cook-I love a great medical mystery!!!

If anyone else knows of an author that writes medical mysteries-PLEASE PM me! I have to wait for the 1 book a year that they come out with.

Maeve Binchy - great stories, very empowering for women
Susan Isaacs - funny, usually romantic stories of New Yorkers
Jane Heller - kind of like Susan Isaacs, but a bit less skilled
Fannie Flagg - very sweet stories, well written, captivating
Billie Lee Letts - great stories, usually with a romance

One of my fav authors is Michael Palmer - they're medical mystery novels and really easy to get into! Of course, a little romance, too. Mainly based in a ficticious hospital in Boston, so quite "New England". Check him out!

Dorthea Benton Frank is an excellent author. She's only got 2 novels out there, but they are WONDEFUL. Planation is her 2nd book and her first Sullivan's Island which is incredibly moving. She is so worth checking out!

I was recently looking for books to read, so I went to the Live with Regis and Kelly website and printed out her book recommendations. I had heard that they are supposed to be "beach reads", but haven't read any of them yet. I'll list them in case anyone's interested.

For a funny light read try Jennifer Crusie. They are very LOL funny and usually a mystery/romance mix. She is from my neck of the woods so all of her settings are familiar to me.

G.A. McKevett writes funny mysteries and she has the same female detective in each.

Sandra Brown is another favorite. She write romances but has a few mysteries as well.

Nice to see more Linda Miller fans Part of the reason I love her is that so many of her books are set in Washington State so I get a real picture of where they are! Dont you love that?

What are the rest of the books in the Orphan train series? Does anyone know? I just read one and now I cant find the other two.

I love the series written by J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. It is set in the future and the main character is a female cop. Very good books!

Thanks, binny! I checked out Linda Lael Miller's website yesterday and there is a *very long* list of her books but no descriptions so I didn't know how I was going to figure out which ones were the vampire stories. With your push in the right direction I went back and discovered she has the Valerian Series which is 4 books in the vampire genre. I'll definitely be adding these to my reading list.

And thanks to Simba's Mom for starting this thread and everyone who replied. I've got a nice, long list of authors to check out now.

My preference is for amusing mysteries - i.e. light-hearted, no "blood & guts". Here are some of my favorite authors - in no particular order:

Leslie Meier - Lucy Stone mysteries
Anne George - Southern Sisters mysteries
Diane Mott Davidson - Goldy Bear mysteries
Tamar Myers - Den of Antiquity & Bed and Breakfast mysteries

Emily Brightwell - Mrs. Jeffries mysteries (these are set in Victorian England, but a hoot!)
Sharyn McCrumb - Elizabeth MacPherson mysteries (a forensic anthropologist) & a number written about Appalachia (some of these are set in the past)

Elizabeth Peters is probably my all time favorite. Her books tend to be a combination of light-hearted mystery & romance. She writes the Amelia Peabody mysteries which are romantic mysteries set when they were digging up the pyramids. You don't need to know about Egyptology to enjoy them though. She also wrote two series set in contemporary times - one is the Vicky Bliss (an art historian) & the other is the Jacqueline Kirby (a librarian) series. She also writes under the names Barbara Michaels & Barbara Mertz.

OK - can anybody tell me authors that are a "gentle read". My 86 year-old mother is an avid reader, but I'm having trouble finding "mild" stuff in large print for her. She has read all of Jan Karon's Mitford series - she likes Danielle Stelle OK (a little too risque sometimes for her!) She just started reading some Fern Micheals. The story-line can't get to complicated - that leaves many "classics" out.
I've written down a few of the authors mentioned here - thanks for the ideas.

Has she ever read the "Mrs Pollifax " series by Dorothy Gillman ? They are very clean ( some profanity and a little violence ie people die ). The story is about a widow that becomes a CIA agebt in her retirement years. There about about 18 ?, and best read in order.

minniecarousel, your mother would enjoy the Fannie Flagg books. Her last one Under the Rainbow is very very good! I read continuously and have some new books to check into on this list. I think my current favorite author is Nora Roberts in both books with this and her JD Robb name. Boots all time favorite author will always be James Mitchner. The Source will always be my favorite book!

Another Rosamund Pilcher fan here. Loved Shellseekers and September. These are always nice gentle reads. She really sets the stage well with great settings and gentle characters. I alway wish I knew and spent time with her charaters.
