I was out shopping yesturday for Mother's day and I picked up a beautiful gift and card for my mother. I know she's going to love it. I was wrapping it this morning, when I realized she's not the only mother in our house anymore. My sister is a "Mommy" too. The baby's father isn't around, and this is her first Mother's day without him and her first since she's started getting back on her feet. Obviously my niece is too little to come up with something to get her mommy, and I'm at a loss. I'm going to pick her up a card and sign Julianna's name, but I want to get her something small to go with it that can be from her daughter.

I know you guys are creative and have brilliant ideas. So please, help!

you should get her a nice boquet of flowers. (ones she really likes or if you dont know just wing it)

I'm not sure how old your niece is from reading your post, so maybe this idea won't work this year. I got this gift idea from another forum & used it for my husband for Father's Day last year; it could be customized for Mother's Day, as well.

Last year, I dressed up my DS6 & DD4 in my husband's clothes (golf shirt, cargo shorts, Crocs & sandals), and took one photo of the 2 of them. Obviously the clothes were huge on them. I printed the photo 4x6 (but 5x7 may have looked better) and adhered it to a solid color 12x12 scrapbook page. My 2 kids decorated the page using markers, I rubber stamped the title: "Just Like Daddy" and we framed it in a black metal 12x12 scrapbook frame from Michael's. It turned out really cute and sits in our home office. Both my kids thought it was so funny to dress up in Daddy's clothes!!

A framed photo of "Just Like Mommy" could be really cute, too!!

That's a great idea, although, she's only 17 months, but I could get her to scribble on the piece of paper first and then tape down the photo.

How about a spa basket? Great for a mom with a little one who doesn't take time for herself. I get inexpensive stuff at walmart like ped cremes, bath salts ect.and have made one for unde $15 in the past.

When I was teaching I had the kids make fingerprint bug notepaper. The cutest was when they would use red ink and make little ladybugs across the top or bottom of the paper and then one little bug on the flap of the envelopes. Just draw little sticks for legs and antennas and some dots for spots and the eyes. Then roll them up with curling ribbon and slide them into a small gift bag.

That's a great idea.....and don't forget to put in some vouchers for free babysitting so she can have some alone time.

You could also do the baby's footprints, if she doesnt' already have that. You can make stepping stones now for the backyard with foot and handprints. We've always found it hard to get the hand print with the little ones. They just reach out and grab the cement!

Hallmark has a cute photo frame that says "I Love Mom" that the kids can color and decorate. I think it was $10.00

Thanks so much for all the ideas guys. These are great. :)
I'm sure I'll be able to find something she'll absolutely love.

One of my all time favorite gifts was made at preschool. It was a piece of white paper with the kid's handprints. Between the hand prints is this poem:

Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls.

But everyday I'm growing
I'll be grown up someday
And all those tiney handprints
Will surely fade away.

So here's a final handprint
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When I was very small

The handprints were done with fingerpaints.

I  it and will keep it forever. I have it in a frame on my wall. You could even frame it for her.

My son is a few months shy of 3 years old. For each fathers day I have put together a little book of photos of him and my DH over the last year. SHots of them doing things togehter ect and what they learned. The small books are fairly cheep on shutterfly and I added text about what my DH had taught my DS over the past year and things they did together. I also put in milestones and described how my DH was teaching my DS how to do things. I wrote it in my sons voice so that it fit with the photos. I will be doing another one this year. My hope is that this year my DS will draw pictures for me to add to the book and in future years it is something he can do on his own. If you dont have time to order it online you can always get a small scrapbook and use your computer for the text.
It is so nice of you to think of doing this for your sister.

I'm sure she will appreciate whatever you decide to get her! I'm having my sunday school class paint flower pots and we're putting potting soil and flowers in them for mother's day. Maybe you can use that idea! And I love this poem, it made me cry when I read it:

Before I was a Mother

Before I was a Mom I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom I never held down a screaming child so doctors
could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I
didn't want to put it down.
>>I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom - I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so
important and happy.
Before I was a Mom - I had never gotten up in the middle of the
night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, The joy, The love, The heartache, The
wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.
And before I was a Grandma, I didn't know that all those "Mom"
feelings more than doubled when you see that little
bundle being held by "your baby".

I just want to say your an awesome sister! :thumbsup2 As a single mom myself...Mother's day can be tough and I think she will honestly appreciate anything at all that you do. No matter how little or how big, this is one of those moments that the thought really is all that matters.

Oh and a pic of her and her daughter in a nice frame is always a simple, easy and a greatly treasured gift! ;)

Thanks. I love them both to death, and my sis has had it hard in the last few years, so I definitely wanted to do this for her.

I decided to go with the finger paint and the poem that Deb posted. Mainly because I could also include Julie's first finger painting. So she's getting two frames: one with the hand prints and poem, and the second is the first fingerpainting Julie's ever done. We did it this evening while my sister was at work. I made sure to get photos of Julie covered in fingerpaint that we'll show her after sunday. The hard part was cleaning up Julie and her highchair so there was no evidence remaining. I'm sure she would have noticed that her daughter had blue hands :rotfl:
We're also going to pick up the cement hand print kits and do one of those for her. This is her second Mother's day, but her first since she and the baby's father split. She's struggling a bit with feeling like a good mother, and she's always afraid she's doing it wrong. So I'm hoping she'll be able to smile on Sunday.

That sounds absolutely perfect. I'm glad that you took photos for her too.

for my daughters second bday my parents bought her a red wagon, my 70 yr old Dad put it together the week before her party and they brought it to her party all shiney red and new,= great gift,.............................................. but my favorite thing was that the entire time my Dad was putting the wagon together, unbeknownced to me... my Mom was taking photos, they are priceless, she has my two yr old sitting on the box holding my dads credit card and a receipt in her hands, then the open box with my two yr old IN THE BOX, then my 2 yr old and grandpa using a screwdriver together, and them "READING the directions together", the pix, in a tiny album are priceless and hilarious, Im so grateful she took these pix of the process!

Good for u for taking those painted neice pix!!!Priceless:rotfl:

I just wanted to say thank you so much for everyone's help. I had my niece finger paint for the first time and do hand prints and used the poem Deb provided. I also let her go ahead and finger paint on another piece of paper and framed both. That with a card, and having her daughter bring the present to her this morning, she cried. I couldn't stop smiling. I haven't seen her so happy before. So yeah, thanks again to everyone who gave me ideas.
