...what other rides should I avoid? I have not done RNR, ToT, BTMR, or Splash Mountain. I would really like to try ToT because the rest of my family wants me to, but I have vertigo, and almost lost it on Space Mountain. Any and all advice is much appreciated. { P.S. - we leave in a few days!} Thanks!!

Oh my--Splash Mountain is my very favorite ride, and I'm not a very adventurous rider! Go on it several times--the 1st time you'll be too busy anticipating the big drop, but the next few times you can really sit back and enjoy the terrific theming!
BTMRR is another good one--no sudden drops--kind of slow, really. I like it.
I did TOT once--glad I did, but won't do it again because of the drops. THe theming is also very good--and though the drops are unsettling, the ride is really very smooth--better than Space Mountain.
Have fun!!!
And ride on an empty stomach!

I don't think Splash Mountain will make you feel ill since the drops are smooth and fast. Big Thunder Mountain has a couple of circular curves. I close my eyes during that part of the ride and it helps. The TOT might bother you due to the fact they send the elevator back up very fast. The repeated up and down motions may bother you. That bothers my head sometimes. I would avoid RNR since there is an inversion and a few corkscrews. The corkscrews made me dizzy.
I would try taking some Bonine, Bonamine or Dramamine before riding. Take it at least an hour before boarding. It will help with motion sickness. You might want to test the medication before your trip to see if it makes you drowsy.

Just wanted to add I love all the rides except RNR. The tower is fun. Just make sure you have someone to hang onto and scream your heart out.

Have you never gotten medication for your vertigo? I got it once last year and the doctor prescribed me some medication that made the dizziness go away in less than 30 min. I would suggest doing something like this if you really want to try some of the other rides. Take something before you get on the ride....if you don't WANT to try the rides, gosh, I say you have a great excuse so just stick with it! ;) Definitely DON'T ride Mission Space....RnR has upside down loops, so be careful of that one. ToT may or may not bother vertigo...if you have it really bad it probably would because it can mess with your equilibrium a little. The main thing to know about ToT is that it is nothing like a roller coaster. When you drop, it is a feeling unlike any other, you just kinda float for a second. Splash Mountain is okay...I usually dread it because it is a pretty large drop at the end, but that's the only thing on it that's bad really. There are at least 3 drops, so it might help you to know the big drop is not until you see the vultures at the top...that will help you not panic on each drop like I did.

... I can take prescription meclizine for the vertigo, but even with that, some rides affect me. Thanks for the tip about the big drop - that DOES help!

I agree about asking your doc for medication if you really want to experience those rides. Space Mountain is very jerky compared to BTMR or Splash. I would think you'd probably be ok on splash and maybe BTMR. If you start to be able to handle those then try the others. For now I would avoid ToT and RnRC.

Myst

Dramamine (is that how you spell it) for motion sickness. I don't know if that would work, but my brother's wife takes it when we go on roller coasters sometimes and it does wonders for her.

Mission Space is very cool, but I would also suggest staying off it. BTMRR is pretty calm, and should be pretty safe. Plus it is also a very cool ride.

Hope this helps.

Rides to stay off of...

Space Mt
Big Thunder Mt
Mission Space
Rockin Roller Coaster (Though its the best ride at MGM!!)
Tower of Terror (Unless your extremly tollerent of drops)

Exactly right. BTMRR made me so ill I had to go lie down for a few hours. It is very jerky. Then the rest of the day I wasn't at my best. I did Space Mt with a patch (had just come off the 4 night Disney cruise and the patch was only one day old). It was terrible. Smoother than BTMRR, but not much.

I can do Splash. I don't do M:S, RnRC. I've done ToT, but I'm not crazy about it. I don't do Teacups. I don't do Star Tours or Body Wars. Test Track is okay, but not exactly great. Soaring was fine, I just closed my eyes when the scenery got me dizzy. The 360 movies also get me dizzy, but I close my eyes if I need to.

I'd give anything to do M:S, but I know I will lose it.

Space Mountain is getting pretty old - and jerky. I know people who won't go on it but will go on RnR because it's so much smoother.

Give everything a try once - you never know. I do agree, though, with above - don't miss Splash Mountain no matter what!

...and thank you for not saying, "why go to Disney if you don't ride the rides?" - so many people have said that to me - they just don't get the magic[sigh]. This will be only our second trip, and our first onsite. Leaving in two days - so excited I can't sleep! Anything I can find out for anyone while I am there?I would like to return the favor if I can.......

I feel your pain! I, too, can get motion sickness quite easily (ain't it fun getting older?!?). Out of all the rides that have been mentioned on this thread, BTMRR is the only one I can do. The drop on Splash absolutely terrifies me; the take off on RnRC really messed with me (I didn't feel sick, I just had no legs when I got off!); I'm afraid to try Space Mtn.; won't try TofT, Body Wars, Star Tours, Mission:Space, Mad Tea Party. I think that about covers everything mentioned. I think I am going to try Soarin' on our October trip, though. Like a previous poster said, I will just close my eyes if the going gets rough! Good luck and have fun!!

BTW - I learned from these boards on our trip in 1999, about Meclizine. It's not a Rx, but you have to ask for it in the pharmacy - they keep it behind the counter. I started taking it about a week before our trip and took one tablet every night during our trip (taking it at night kept me from feeling the sleepy effects). That may be the only reason I could tolerate BTMRR. We rode it 3-4 times in a row. In all honesty, I probably should have stopped after twice, though. I felt a little funny after that 4th trip!

You're welcome! Agree--Disney is SO much more than the rides.
My DS 7 and I had an agreement this trip--I'd ride it if he'd ride it. Thus, I tried everything he tried. But there was no pressure to go back on any ride we didn't like.
You'll be fine. Enjoy the shows!

if you get nauseous on Space Mountain then there is a VERY good chance that you will get nauseous on RNR. BTMR could also be a problem for you.

It's possible you'll get sick on ToT, but it's straight up and down (and up and down and up and down)...
you could probably try it once to see (maybe at the end of the day when you can go to sleep if you get sick).

However, Splash Mountain should be totally safe for you. It has one big straight drop at the end that shoudln't affect people with motion sickness. And 2 tiny little roller coaster drops in the middle that also shoudlnt' be a problem.

by the way, i have very serious motion sickness....
i can't do RNR or ToT at all.....but oddly i can do Space Mountain (but only the one on the left, not the one on the right, which makes me sick)....

but i can ride splash mountain all day and night....i've done it 6 times in a row without problem....

I have to personally disagree with this one. It really depends on which "motion" makes you sick.

Many people, myself included, feel ill on Space Mountain because it jerks you back and forth so much because it's such a rickety old coaster.

RnR, on the other hand, is a much newer coaster and rides much more smoothly - especially in the front. The first few rows are the most smooth (and since there are no big drops it's not scary like being in the front of most coasters). Plus, RnR is so short - the actual time "in the air" is only like 75 seconds.

If, on the other hand, just the forward motion of a roller coaster gets you, then yes, you will likely experience it on ANY coaster.

I honestly know many older people (parents, grandparents) who hate Space but will ride RnR. The motion on the rides is quite different.

FYI: 25 mg of Meclizine is the same thing as 25 mg of Antivert. One is just over the counter.

I also experience vertigo and last January asked my doctor for something for rides. He laughed and said 'the only full proof treatment was to just not ride them'. When I told him that wasn't an option, he then recommended ginger pills a couple of times a day, my meclizine tablets, and wrote me another prescription for scopolamine patches to go behind the ear. Each patch lasts about three days. They're usually ordered to prevent car sickness and sea sickness. He also said to carry some alcohol pads and to sniff one if I felt queasy after a ride. Let me think, he also said to eat a banana and to sip cold ginger ale or nibble on ginger snap cookies (something about the ginger settles your stomach and helps restore your equilbrium).

the problem with RNR is the corkscrew at the end....anyone with motion sickness is usually taken out by the corkscrew ...

all you have to do is sit at the exit of RNR to figure out who's sick and who's not....the sick ones come off green (my daughter included)....i didn't go on it because i know never to go on anything that has a corkscrew like that...

and someone with severe motion sickness can take all the meclizine and bonine in the world and it won't help...

and yes i forgot to add mission space...a definite no no for anyone with motion sickness...

two more to avoid if you have motion sickness: Body Wars in Epcot and Star Tours in MGM....
Body Wars is much worse than Star Tours (i can survive Star Tours if i keep my eyes squeezed shut, although i still get queezy), but on the one and only time i went on Body Wars, it was all I could do to get to the bathroom in time before i lost my lunch....and i was bedridden for the rest of the day....

and for that matter.....be careful on some of the virtual reality things at DisneyQuest....they can take you out as well.....

Another little tip for those attempting Soarin'. I don't usually get motion sickness, but the first time I rode this, I was tired, etc. so it bothered me a little. Instead of closing my eyes, I looked at the feet dangling above me and giggled. It helped. :) Now, if you are on the 3rd row, you'll be at the top and can't do that....but it amused me and made me not feel dizzy at the same time.
