Hello everyone. I have been hanging out here at the dis for a while. I have gotten so much wonderful information for our upcoming trip to WDW. We have been trying for about ten years to make it, and for the last 6 months all my family (me, DH, DD 6, DS 8, DS 13) has been doing is talking about our upcoming trip, and planning, planning, planning! We have new luggage, water bottles, ADR's, and moleskin!

So, last night i had to take DH to the er. He has an umbilical hernia! He has to have surgery. The only time he could get off for work was the week of July 4. Now, he has to use up his vacation time for his recovery!

The kids and i decided we don't want to go without him, and we will try again next year. Case closed, or so i thought. Well, DH now says he hasn't been saving up money for us to cancel, and wants us to go without him!

So, I guess I need some advice. I don't know if i want to go without him, but on the other hand I was soooooo looking foreward to it. I feel guilty about even thinking of going, but maybe we should???
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, wow!! I don't have any advice just big :grouphug: . Whatever you decide, I hope it all goes well.

I ended up going to WDW without DH just last February. DD had asked a friend so it was difficult for us to back out and disappoint someone else (she'd worked to save all her own money.) So, we went ahead without him. DD and I both hated it--we missed him too much and we decided never to go without him again. :teeth:

DH's problem was work related, though, not a surgery. For myself, I don't think I would leave DH right after a surgery. I like to flatter myself that he needs me (and only me!) to run his errands for him. :teeth:

It's hard but it's really up to you--each family is different. If you have someone else to take care of him if he needs it and he wants you to go and you're comfortable with it--go on and enjoy.

Will he back at work when you would be going? And he'll be able to take care of himself then? I would only go if he would be back at work working and not at home in bed needing to be taken care of.

:grouphug: from me also. I don't really have advice but a thought. Does his job have sick leave privileges? If that is so then it shouldn't interfer with the vacation time. I would have him talk to his human resources person at work.

As for the surgrey itself he could do the recouping by the pool at the resort. :goodvibes

I would only go if DH wasn't really into going to WDW in the first place and if he was only saving the $$ because it was something YOU really wanted and he was just going along with your plans.

I was going to basically say what DISNEY180 said above, what about sick time, as well as recovering a bit while at WDW?

No advise other than that. Hope all works out, I bet it does. My best for your hubby and also, welcome to the DIS as a poster, not just a lurker.

First of all, hugs to you! If this is your first ever trip to Disney, I don't think I'd be able to go without him. If you've never been there before, you have no idea what you're in for! It's fun, YES, but a lot of walking, etc. You're going to want another parent there. Besides that, you'll miss him the whole time. I went once without my DH and I was miserable inside. I missed him so much! And we had been to Disney quite a few times. It wasn't the same and I don't know if I'd ever do it again.

Good luck and hope you can work something out.

I just wanted to say Thank You so much to eveyone who replied!

Here's what's going on: We are going to wait until we see the surgeon Monday to decide what to do. It depends on when his surgery will be. They are letting him work (light duty) for now, which is great.

We are still working on them not using up his vacation time for his recovery. He will be on short term disability while he is off, but they usually use up any vacation time you have left for the year, first. If they don't do that, I think we will still be able to go.

The kids and I decided we will definitely(sp?) not go without him. He said we should go anyways, but that's not going to happen. We would miss him too much.

If we all can go, it will just have to be a more relaxed vacation. No commando style WDW vacation for us! I think recovering by the pool is much better than recovering at home!

Thanks again everyone!
