Help - How to read a gas meter

Hi everyone, I got an unusually high gas bill for the last month, when we weren't even in town. We were actually at WDW for three weeks. So the bill was for just a few days of gas usage for heat when we got back home. I went to match what the bill states as the actual read, to the meter itself. I wrote down the numbers for each little spinning dial. This is where the little dials were located:

1 7 3 7

What is the reading? On my bill the meter read is Actual 524-535

I don't get it...these numbers aren't anywhere near the bill's numbers. Anyone know how to read this? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would just call your gas company and ask. My bill was higher than I was hoping for last month as well, and I keep my house at 62 day/59 night, which is pretty low. So, maybe your heater had to keep going even if you had it around 55. Last month was fairly cold around here; I'm in PA. For this month, I'm going to work harder at watching my utilities, and I know my gas fireplace uses a lot, but we like it SO much.

Well, your meter reading would be different now than what is on your bill wouldn't it since it is from the previous month?

Look on your bill, probably on the back and it will explain to you how to read the meter.

If you want to be certain of what the reading is, call and find out when they come by to read it. My mom used to leave a post-it note on the meter asking the meterman to write down the actual reading so she could compare it to her bill. I don't know if there is a better way to do it, especially since alot of time nowadays they just drive by with there machine and it just takes an estimate.
