Help - How do I get rid of smell?

Last week my DD was very sick all over the inside of my friend's fairly new car. Unfortunately we were 20 minutes from home and had to wait to clean it up properly. A week later my friend can still smell it. Has anyone any ideas for removing the smell from upholstery? We've used soap and water and a liberal spray of fabreeze. Would a professional valet be any more effective? I feel so embarressed and guilty.

Hi

My DS threw up all over our carpet and the smell was horrendous. A friend at work told me to brush in Bicarbonate of Soda, leave it a little while and then hoover it up.

It worked on a carpet so I'm sure the car can't be must different. Worth a try before bringing in the professionals.

Good luck.

A word of caution.....I was round a friends house at christmas, in a room they had just decorated etc, it had a nice blue carpet, with a very obvious faded patch near the sofa.....I asked what happened, and was told it was a red wine spillage, and someone had told her to use bicarb onate of Soda to clean it....which she did....but it left permanant damage.

Until DS was 12 months old, he would be sick regulary - several times a day (weak valve at top of stomach). We found Bicarb of Soda did the trick, if it got onto the sofa or carpet. Didn't have any problems with it.

Suggest you do a small test patch first.

the trouble with sick is that if you leave just one little bit.. it smells.

I would go over it all again... and see if there was a tiny bit you missed..
thats all I can suggest..
if the fabrese and soap and water isnt working...

I think I would have it professionally cleaned at this point. And hat's off to your friend for not losing her cool--if some kid threw up in my new car I'm afraid I would not be so kind. :cool1:

I have heard coco cola not sure if it would help with the smell, not sure if it would help at all I know they use this when cleaning sick up on aeroplanes, etc. they pour coca cola on to the area, and leave for a few mins..??? anyone else ever heard of this before..?

If the smell is quite bad, and they cannot get rid of it, they could get the carpets cleaned by a car valeter, My Dp does this pleasant job :rotfl:

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm trying to persuade her to get it professionally cleaned (at my expense, obviously) but I've also suggested the bicarb. to her. I'm a bit cautious of the cola as I'm pretty sure that would stain the fairly light coloured seats.

Libby - I've nothing useful to add except I think I would probably go the valet route. I can totally understand why you feel embarassed & guilty but I'm sure your friend wouldn't want you to! You may even see the funny side in years to come!!
