Help? How can I get to work today????

I live in North Jersey and well as of 7 o'clock this morning they have suspended all bus service in my area. That was how I was going to get to work. My car is completely plowed and snowed in. I have not heard from my boss yet about going into work.

My mother called me and her Cardiologists office closed today and she told me to not attmept to drive into work. I just don't know what to do.

Any suggestions. I want to go obviously but, if the bus service is suspended what do I do?

Do you have any personal days to take? You might have to do it that way. Or take a half day after spending the time it'll take to dig your car out.

I feel your pain! We're still barely dug out from the last snow storm and here it comes again.

Can a train work? Otherwise, take a personal day like I'm doing. I think my boss is pissed but too freakin' bad.

I always ride the bus when the roads are bad. My rule is that if the buses are running, I'll be there. If not, well, if the buses aren't able to get through it, there's no way I'll be able to make it in my car.

Sadly, I live in Michigan and I don't remember bus service ever being cancelled.

OP--call your supervisor and explain the situation. It's better to be safe.

In regards to the bus service I can't even remember when they have EVER suspended it. My car is totally plowed in and we have over a foot and half if not more of snow.

So my thinking is if the buses aren't running, then it is not safe for me to drive my car. I know she is going to be upset and I feel really bad but there is no safe way for me to get into work. My cocern is also coming home, the snow tapered off but its going to pick up again.

Stay home and enjoy the 3 day weekend.... I am in NNJ also (morris county). I was out earlier snow blowing and very few of my neighbors have dug their car out.

Called my boss and she said that not to worrry she is going to try and make it in. I should stay home and not worry, I can use a personal day.

She said worse case if its too busy she'll come pick me up.

Snow day for me!

Well, when we get a lot of snow we dig our cars out as the snow falls. So if the snow occurs overnight I dig out my car late at night before I go to bed and then get up really early and do it again. Same with our driveway. It always amazes me that people wait until the snow stops, that is just too late.

I would check public transportation too if that is an option in your area.

That is what I was going to suggest. I had to do that yesterday. I only have a minivan and by the time I would head home, I knew it would be bad. So one my co-worker picked me up in his 4WD pickup with the plow on it and another coworker who lives near me brought me home in her 4WD pickup. Thank goodness today is my day off! We are in Sussex county.

We live in NW Morris County, I work in West Orange. My office closed today (the second time this month, which is more than they have closed in the last 10 years). I went in yesterday since the driving was really no issue in the morning, and we closed at 1 PM.

I'll work remotely for a while this afternoon to get some stuff done (lucky I can do that) but we have so much snow on the ground and it will take hours to get out.

I ended up coming in to work. We took a shuttle van from Hoboken that the company provides. I actually found it relaxing. So glad I did not have to drive in the mess this morning. It seemed like they stopped plowing the roads once they determined that schools would be closed.

Honestly, I think that if the situation is bad enough to suspend public transportation and nobody will die if your business closes-then it should close. I understand that it costs money in lost productivity-but really. Having people who don't need to be on the roads OFF the roads is helpful to the snow removal process and certainly to the police who aren't spending their day dealing with accidents from people who HAD to get into the office.

What? Back in '67 when Chicago had the 27" snowfall the whole city shut down. The company ( a big one) said don't even try to get in and vacation, personal and sick days won't be charged. It took several days before we could open up.

What kind of work do you do that is so critical that you get in. Your health and safety is probably a lot more important.

The city didn't want you on the roads because it interferred with clean up. One of the reason it took so long to plow was because of the abandoned cars from the storm. They were left all over the streets. It got to a point during the storm where where they got stuck they were left. In order to plow the main streets the city would have to plow a couple of hundred feet into side streets in order to have a place for the tow trucks to move the cars to so they could get the plows in. The main streets where litterly plowed block by block.
