One last question. Well...maybe two.

Can you borrow all of the next use year's points for use in the current use year? To be more specific, if we buy 170 pts now, take advantage of magical beginnings and have an August use year (stopping to take a breath) can we borrow from August 2004's allotment to take a December 2003 trip and have 340 pts?

My husband also asked this question: Is it better to be taking a trip on points borrowed from next year or points banked from the previous year? He says he'd prefer to use borrowed points. What do you all think?

I've got him right at the edge of caving in and don't want to lose the momentum. I know I'll get quick responses from this board!

Thanks so much!

Michelle

If you buy 170 points and sell back the 2002 points, yes! You will have 170 2003 points and 170 2004 that you can borrow.

Good luck to a fellow upstater!

Tell the cheap skate to live it up and shoot the buck, he will love it.

As for 170 points we are going to Hawaii in a few weeks with a interval trade 160 points for 7 nights in the Marriots Kaui Beach Club Resort in a one bedroom unit.

Good Luck your almost home!

You've got to cut the guy some slack, though. He's an accountant for crying out loud. You have no idea how hard it is for him to spend money. (except on a big screen TV or riding lawn mower, but that's another discussion) Anyway, that's the reason I'm pushing so hard for this. Otherwise, we'd never go on vacation!!

I was somewhat in the same boat as you. My DW worked for an acct. firm at the time we bought. Im a dumb ol country boy who wouldnt take the time to put #s together to prove my point. I had a hard time convincing her, not that she didnt want to take a nice vacation to WDW every yr, but she compensated that we could afford the All Stars. After staying 1st time at our home resort at VWL she has been an avid believer in DVC, heck she stays on these boards more often than me now. IM SO PROUD OF HER!!

Give this true to life example for your # crunching DH. This is true because we are the example. Just called at 11 mos. for 2 bedroom at VWL for Dec 2-9 2003. That is 270 pts, 140 banked from 02, 140 from 03 use yr. Ours just happens to be Aug use yr like your potential buy.

Anyway, we have 220 pts that cost us with Dues each month this year $250. That $250 x 12 mos = $3000. According to Birnbaums 2003 guidebook, a bedroom at VWL cash price for that same week is $535 per night. $535x7 nights =$3745, a difference of $745. IMO that is money back in my pocket.

There are a lot of folks on this board that can give more detailed numbers than that example but that satisfies me enough. We have done the All Stars and have nothing against them. But we have gotten past the commando tour, in fact DVC helped to slow us down and learn to relax, which is what vacation is all about anyway. I hope this might help. Good luck and hope to say Welcome Home very soon!!

We both bank and borrow to go every other year.

You have more flexibility when you are in a banking situation - in that if you have points banked, you can combine them with current year points and next year points to get maximum points in a single year. If you are always in borrow mode, you lack the flexibility. i.e. use bank points first, current year points next, borrowed points last.

We have 150 points - which makes for about 300 every other year. The vacations we have planned are for less than 300 points, so slowly we will borrow less and bank more every year. Eventually, we will get to the point where we "need" to spend some extra points so as not to lose them - either by going two years in a row, staying longer, or taking guests.

I prefer NOT to be in a borrowing situation, if I can help it. But, I have a friend that borrows the minute her points become available. I like to know that I have a lot of flexibility in whatever plans we decide to make. However, we, too, used Magical Beginnings and we waited quite a while before taking our first trip.

The problem with going right away on borrowed points is that it will make you want to go again, really soon. But, you have to think that there will be some time in the future that you will not be able/want to go and then your points will catch back up to you.

Good luck with your decision. Very few people ever regret buying into DVC.

Have you given any thought to a resale? I'm the accountant in the family, and when I saw that I could buy a resale for less than the going price at Disney ... and even buy a contract that came with banked points, well, I was hooked. It was our promise to ourselves that, for the next forty years at least, we won't neglect our need for a vacation because we don't want to shell out the money. Now it has already been shelled. We HAVE TO go on vacation!
