In line for our first ever visit to Cafe Orleans. Do I want the Monte Cristo or the Three-Cheese Monte Cristo??????? Which one is the famous awesome sandwich?

From what I've heard, many people consider the 3-cheese version to be a bit too greasy.

The three cheese Monte Cristo is the vegetarian version, so if you want meat go for the Monte Cristo.

Meat is the traditional one. It's good but huge. 3 of you could split it, if you eat like us. Don't forget pommes frites!!

Anyway... I had so hyped the alleged greatness of this sandwich in my mind, that it couldn't possibly have met expectations. And it didn't.

The sandwich was not what I had expected - ham and swiss in (basically) french toast - which I love. I'm not a huge fan of how they made it - a little bit of filling stuffed into (for lack of a more eloquent description) a giant beignet and deep fried to a greasy brown. It was pretty to look at, but 'meh' to eat.

The soup was ok and the pomme frites were quite tasty.

We skipped dessert, but they were offering pumpkin beignets and a pumpkin creme brûlée.

All in all, I'm glad I tried it, so now I don't have to wonder anymore.
