Help Garbage disposal clogged!!

I sent carrot peels down the disposal and it is clogged beyond the grinder but not to the elbow because the other sink drains. I tried plunging it. Can I use draino, etc. any suggestions before I call the plumber!

did you cover the other drain when you plunged? admitting to having not realized this the first time...

its grinding. it is plugged past the grinder.

My DH, who is a newspaper editor not a plumber, can fix that in about 10 minutes. He takes apart the pipes next to the elbow, and getting the clog out is a cinch. He had to do it last weekend after I peeled two pounds of carrots for beef stew. I've watched him, but I'm still not sure I could do it. He starts with a couple of old towels and a big bucket for the water to go in when he gets the pipe apart. Given that you're already planning to call a plumber, you might try it -- the worst thing that would happen would be that the plumber would have to put it back together.

Try pouring some boiling water down the drain. It may take a few times but it could soften up the gunk and send it down....

Be careful about plunging.....I had this problem a few months ago and made the mistake of plunging the drain that the disposer is attached to. I think I plunged too hard because the disposer fell off!

That having a clogged garbage disposal is such a BIG problem.

I'm with tar heel. If you can tell where the clog is, I'd take apart the pipe and clear it out.

Anywhooo... I would try the boiling water- makes sense and is a good place to start before you start taking things apart.
