Yes, with 5 days to go DS is starting to get a cold. Runny nose and coughing. We have an aide that brings a little boy with her in the mornings and he had a running nose and sounded terrible. She said it was asthma but now DS is getting sick and yesterday I told her the little boy was sick not just asthma.

Help friends! What can I do to get him better quick? I have the vaporizer on him, he ate strawberries for breakfast. Is emergen-C too much for little ones? He is just 4.

I also called the aide and told her she is not to come tomorrow unless she comes alone. I really don't need this right now!

Get some air born right away. I think they have a Jr. version. It has really worked for us to reduce the duration and the severity of the cold.

I would take him to the DR.s right away to make sure its just a cold and then start him on meds. It won't be fun if its an infection and you find out once you're there. If its just a cold then he should start feeling better by the 1st-2nd day at Disney.

I used to get colds all the time before a vacation when I was younger and used to vacation with my parents. Doc used to say it was my nerves and excitement of going on vacation.:confused3 I guess thats why now I hate to fly cause all my memories of flying were of me hacking away on a plane

I hope he feels all better soon ;)

Thanks, We don't have airborne Jr. but I am going to try 1/2 dose of emergenc-e and see if it helps. If not I will half the airborne for adults. We don't have any stores by us so we have to use what we have...urg.

Thanks again for the great suggestions.

I would take him to the Dr. and see what they suggest. I know some people swear by Airborne but my Dr. doesn't hold much faith in them. They're vitamins and before you give any meds/vitamins you should ask your doctor.

If its just a cold he should be ok in 5 days.

First of all, I would say relax. I'm sure your vacation will still be wonderful even if DS still has a cold. But, to make sure it's not something more serious, I would take him to the doctor asap. We've had to deal with many colds, sore throats, and even a stomach virus at WDW and we still managed to have a wonderful time on each trip. Good luck!

I tried the airborne and he won't touch it. So we are just trying to control the runny nose and push fluids.

We rarely go to the DR as it is so far away and fuel is so costly. Right now it seems to be just a cold he got from the little guy the aide brings along. I did call her and gave her today off as I don't want the cold going back and forth.

We are lucky that we don't leave until Tuesday morning and we fly all day Tuesday. I am hoping he is clearing up by the time we leave so he is comfortable on the flight.

If not it will be more benadryl to control the symptoms. However, I must speak to the aide about bringing a sick child into my home. This is costing her money she could have had and me not getting the chores done and getting ready to go.

While taking airbourne this winter, I added it to a liitle sprite that I had left in a glass. It made such a difference in the taste. I know drinking soda isn't great for kids, but maybe try some apple juice to mask the flavor. Also, lots of fluids.

I'd do Emergen-C over Airborne...last time I read the ingredients, the latter has artificial sweeteners, and that's just yuck for a little kid (or anyone, but a little kid especially).

Giggling at the idea of asking an MD about vitamins...their one or two courses in nutrition doesn't make them experts in vitamins at all. I've had 2 couses, call me! :)

I think before we give any type of medication whether its tylenol or vitamins you should ask your doctor about the type and the dosage especially about otc drugs and especially w/children. I'm sure you realize that vitamins can be toxic as well and very dangerous if not taken correctly especially for children and their little bodies.

My doctor is very up to date on vitamins...education for doctors is ongoing throughout their careers. So yes they may have only had 2 classes in med school but that doesn't mean they aren't educated in the vitamin field. I guess it depends on the doc...I'm sure glad I have the doc I have.

Don't waste your money on Airborne - plenty of evidence that it does no good, and may do harm: http://sciam.com/: "ABC News looked into the clinical trial and discovered that it was conducted by GNG Pharmaceutical Services, "a two-man operation started up just to do the Airborne study. There was no clinic, no scientists and no doctors. The man who ran things said he had lots of clinical trial experience. He added that he had a degree from Indiana University, but the school says he never graduated."

...found no evidence that any of the ingredients prevents colds. Worse, vitamin A is unsafe in doses greater than 10,000 units a day, and Airborne contains 5,000 units per tablet and recommends five pills a day or more."

With a child that young, I wouldn't take a chance and start dosing him with various things just to go on a Disney trip when he probably just has a cold that will run its course (given that he came in contact with a child who had a cold). I would go with good old fashioned rest, fluids, and some acetaminophen to control any fever, maybe a child's decongestant to help with symptoms. In any case, I would never do anything not advised by a doctor, and I would make sure to take him to the doctor if it seemed like anything more than a cold.

Fluids and rest. Fluids and rest. Fluids and rest. Warm showers. Vicks. Try a steam treatment if he gets very congested. (Hot water running in the sink, towel of his head (and probably yours) and breathe in the steam.)

Good luck and hugs to you both. Hope your little guy is on the mend!

We leave in the morning and now we have green snot running but he is not running a fever and he is still a ball of energy so it is just going to run the course with help from some decongestant.

There was nothing I could do to help him other than we started to nap each day and we pushed juice.

It still went green and we are not going to miss Disney for cold.

Wish us luck, April
