Help! Does anybody know what these bugs are?

For the past few years, during the early spring and then again in the late summer we get these stupid bugs all over our front windows. They are winged and black with orange on them. These things are driving me insane! I can't open the windows because they find their way in. They are also all over the ground in the front of the house. It seems like they stay where it is sunny.

Does anybody have any idea what these are? Better yet, how do I get rid of them?

Are they like beetles? Sounds like a variety of lady bug that we see sometimes. They often get in around windows.

Are they box elder bugs? They are harmless We have them all over, and they die out rather quickly..

They are what are known as June Bugs!

I remeber them quite well when I lived in CT! It just means that Spring Has Sprung!

Definately box elder bugs!!!!!

They don't have a hard shell like june bugs right? June bugs are mostly out at night.


Someone in your neighborhood has a box elder tree most likely. They find a way in your house all the time. Through the cracks in your windows, doors, etc.


There is a spray that will help get rid of them. Some say that a spray bottle of watered down dish soap will work too, but test it on your house first, it could discolor your siding.

They are harmless. Just be careful when you squish them to kill them, they will leave a little colored bit of themselves behind! !

Those little buggers were all over my screens this morning for the first time this year. They truly are a harbinger of warmer weather.

Thanks everyone! I checked out the links and they are box elder bugs. Normally, I just ignore the things but today they are just disgusting, swarming everywhere. I am going to get dh out there with some dish soap/water mixture and hope that will get rid of some of them. Thanks again.

Tide & water mixed will kill them. I have tried other soaps and Tide works when nothing else will. I posted last year on this board about this.
We had elder trees next door to our house and the bugs covered almost 3 sides of our house. I thought I would have a heart attack!
The neighbor has cut the trees down and the bugs were much less last year. There have been a few out so far but I keep my handy bottle of Tide & water near the door and give them a spray and they are off to bug heaven!
