HELP...cat is pooping and peeing around the house!

I have 3 cats. 2 of them are 8 years old, and they are brother and sister. The other one has been with us for almost 2 years.

The "sister" has recently started pooping and peeing around the house. I JUST caught her peeing all over the hardwood floors in the kitchen.

What could be causing this??? Has anyone else experienced this?

I have a few suggestions, but they aren't guaranteed to work

1. How many litter boxes do you have? For three cats you probably should have more than one box (or, like we have, a REALLY big one)

2. Sometimes it can mean they have a urinary tract infection, so you might want to see the vet.

3. When a cat uses it somewhere they KNOW to go back to the spot; I guess they can smell it. Some people suggest that FeliWay stuff. They have plug ins and spray but it is expensive. I have some and I'm not really sure how well it works yet (my cat are fighting all the time all of a sudden).

4. If the cat is nervous or scared for some reason sometimes they will do that.

I don't really know what other advice to offer. It's really aggravating when one of your cats starts doing something like this for no obvious reason.

The only things I can think of:

a) dirty litterbox - we used an enclosed style box, and once every 5-6 years, we had to buy a completely new enclosure. (I think the plastic just got impregnated with the stink no matter how much I rinsed it out, and that made my kitty mad).

b) some type of UTI?

c) is there a cat hanging around in the neighbourhood? Sometimes a strange cat lurking around (even if it's on the other side of a door) could set my cat off.

d) a new boyfriend or baby or new roommate?

I have a cat that was abused. After I adopted him he wouldn't poop in a litter box. Then he decided to starting peeing around the house. I had him checked by the vet, he is healthy. We tried valium, different litters. special litter and he just won't go in the 5 litter boxes I have here for 3 cats. I put down aluminum oven sheets and that is where he goes. I am glad I have tile floors. He is 6-7 years old.

Did anything change recently? My best friend's cat started pooping on the bed after her boyfriend moved in. He apparently didnt like him. lol. She took him to the vet, tried every kind of litter, he kept doing it until the bf moved out. I think this cat is on to something. lol
