I tried to make Caramel apples for a craft fair concessions.....I rinsed them in hot water to get the wax off. I dipped the apples and let them sit and the caramel still slide off....What have I done wrong??? is the wax still on them.....any experts out there??????

DH says give 'em a light sanding with a fine grit sandpaper.

I would personally ignore that advice.

Could you give them a quick dip in boiling water? or would that cook them too much?

Thanks for the advice. They definitely were dry, and I did use boiling water to dip them in to help get the wax off, I put them in the cold to try to set the caramel after dipping to no avail.......Sanding sounds like something my dh would suggest.....Actually he thinks the caramel is to thin....I definitely don't think that is the problem as it was very viscus when I dipped them....

Make sure that after you wash your apples, you let them sit overnight in the refrigerator, only taking them out when the caramel is ready.. the caramel will not stick to warm or hot apples.

This is a trick that my grandmother taught me. :thumbsup2

Mmmmm thanks...I'll give it one more try later tonight or tomorrow.

Hi! I have had the same problem multiple times. I have tried everything. I think you might still have wax on them. I found that I have to buy apples at a produce store, fruit stand ect. because they usually don't have wax on them. I have had great luck with wax free apples. Good luck!

I made carmel apples a few weeks ago with the kids. And all I did was wash them in warm water and dried them. And the carmel stuck perfect.
Is there a reason to boil them?

I just got doing apples for our youth group and all I did was take a damp towel and cleaned the apples and then let them sit. I dip them and then put them in the frig right away. I don't stop there, once the carmel is hard enough, I bring them back out and dip them in chocolate and before that gets hard, sprinkle with peanuts or whatever I have at the time. I have got to say, they were really good! Now I am hungry for a dipped apple!

Im making the "mini caramel apple" recipe from familyfun magazine for a concession in a few weeks. Its not actually caramel apples but apples dipped in melted peanut butter chips. We made them for our halloween party and they were sooo good and a big hit with both kids and adults. The best part is that they are easy make and to eat. One bite and they are done.

I read somewhere to roll them in powdered sugar, but haven't tried it personally.

Another trick to remove wax residue is to wash them in vinegar and rinse and dry. The wax they use now seems to be harder to remove than it used to be...:confused3

We are 2 days away from Thanksgiving. People have questions. The budget board tends to be more active than the cooking thread. Not sure why these threads are clearly bothering you so much.:confused3

This is why I love the caramel wraps. They always come out perfect. Not sure how budget friendly they are. Well, I guess if they work then maybe that's a savings right?

After I rinse and dry, I let 'em sit on the counter for an hour, to be sure they're both really dry and room temperature. If they come from the fridge, they'll sweat as they warm, and that makes caramel not stick.

I ate a whole pack of carmel wraps once:lmao: they were good. Have you ever had one of those Mrs' Prindlables before? those are good. I have no tips just want to say I hope you can get them to work.;)

I haven't had this problem myself, but I remember reading that if the carmel is too hot you will have this problem. Also, I just read over the directions on the bag of carmels and it says "Chill until set." That is what I did when I made mine a few weeks ago and they turned out great.
Good Luck!:flower3:

I just made caramel apples a week ago. I bought the kraft caramel chips, which includes 5 sticks in the bag. The bag does 5 apples perfectly.
I dipped my apples in boiling water, 1 at a time, for a count of 3, so 3 seconds unless I counted fast. Can't leave them in too long or the skin will want to peel off. Then, while it was hot, I took a dishtowel and wiped them really good. I could see the residue from the wax coming off. After doing this to 5 apples, I set them aside (did not refrigerate) and melted my caramel. Then I dipped the apples and they came out perfect.
