My DD was mad last Saturday and kick the bottom of our couch. I was pretty sure she broke her big toe. I have had it taped for the past 5 days but it doesn't seem to show any signs of improvement. Is there anything else I can do ? How long does it (generally) take for a broken toe to heal? I am going to try to get her in to the Dr. tomorrow but in the mean time any help or advice would be appreciated.

I think I broke a toe once though I never went to the doctor. It turned black and blue and took about 3 months before it stopped hurting.

My DD broke her's a couple of years ago. I can't remember exactly how long it took to heal but I'm sure it was more than 2 weeks.

She went a week without it taped, we'd gone to the Dr but she said that it looked like it would be okay and we were leaving on a vacation. Said if it was still swelled when we got back to go back in. Ended up having to go to an ortho but all they did was an x-ray and tell us to tape it

I don't know why they didn't just tell us that in the first place. All I would expect is for them to tell you whether it's broken and have you keep it taped.

Ouch!!! Poor kid!! :(

I've broken a couple toes and it hurts like heck. . :o

This is just from my own experience, but the first time the doctor took a quick look and taped it just like I had done myself; and the second I just taped it myself, and it healed just as quick. .

I think it's one of those things that just take a few weeks to heal; I hope the pain eases off for her soon. . :)

If her toe is broken you are doing what they suggest but she may have actually fractured a bone above the toe in the foot. That happens easily too. Best to have the doctor xray.

Sometimes with a big toe they also suggest crutches. I know they did when I broke my big toe many moons ago. I was barefoot and gracefully kicked a small superball, then turned the toe under my foot and stepped on it. I was in 3rd grade and now I'm 42, but I still remember the sound of the crunch. Man it hurt!

oooh, owww, I still remember the pain!! I too was barefoot and kicked the sole of someone else's shoe! Two toes, OUCH!! My parents were out of town so, I called my Grandma who was a nurse. She told me they wouldn't do anything for a toe(s) so, tape it, ice it, stay off it. Well, 2 out of 3 were all I could do! I was working and wearing heeled shoes everyday!! God, WHAT was I thinking? Awful misery for several weeks but, I had to work. :(

So, my advice, don't forget my Grandma's advice #3!!!! Stay off it!!

Speedy healing!

I broke two toes once, went to hospital and they just strapped the toes together and sent me on my way. As long as the toe isn't deformed, other than pain killers, there's very little that can be done to treat it.

In my case, after the swelling and bruising went down, I suffered light pain in one toe for around three months - I believe that one of the joints was slightly dislocated. This was until I was standng in the surf and the massaging affect of the sand and the water 'clicked' the toe back into place and I've had no toe problem ever since (around 17 years).

I did it again last autumn, I twisted a toe on the tub grab handle and suffered pain, bruising and a lot of swelling for a few days and it was almost completely better within two weeks.

Obviously, everyone's circumstances will be different, but I hope my experience helps a little. :)

I've had four broken toes (only one was confirmed with an x-ray and that was just because I already had an appointment). Each time I taped them and it took about 6 weeks to heal. With a big toe I think I'd get it checked out. Splinting it to the toe next to it wouldn't be as effective (at least if her foot looks like mine!) and you might need some sort of splint.

The only advice for tonight I can give is to prop her blankets up so that there is no pressure on her feet while she is sleeping.

Agreeing with RNMOM... best to have it xrayed to see if the bones above the toes are AOK

Btw.. RNMOM... we always seem to be on the same wavelength!
I think we have seen way to many patients! LOL

I broke my baby toe just this past Monday. They had me put ice on it for 15 minutes each hour, and taped it to my other toe. I am still having trouble walking on it, but it is feeling a bit better. They told me it should feel much better in a few weeks.

Hope your DD feels better!

Owie!!! Broke two toes last sping. They still don't look right. Anyway....this is what I did. Tape the big toe to the next toe over. Then, and this is what really helped my toes heal, wear shoes that don't allow your foot to bend. No sneakers. Everytime you step off, you bend that toe again. I walked, in sneakers, for almost 3 months before I finally went to an ortho guy. Put me in one of those 'moon shoe' thingies. I went out and bought Merrill clogs. Very supportive to my whole foot but allowed no movement of the toe area. It took almost 3 more months before I could move those toes. But taping two together and wearing a shoe that doesn't bend did the trick. Good luck.

Took her in today, they did two sets (of 3 xrays) because the first set didn't come out. She check out "okay" the basic stay off it as much as possible etc.

I am glad that I took her though. I was concerned because she said she felt like something was "poking out."
