Help!!!!! Best place for vegetarian food????

Grains are not vegetables, either... but it seems to a staple of vegetarian diets! You have to love diversity!
Vegetarian diets are made up of plant-based food, not just those classified as vegetables. Below are dictionary definitions, although to the vegan one I would add for clarification that eggs, dairy, etc. are not consumed. :flower:

veg·e·tar·i·an·ism
the theory or practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables , fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products

veg·an
A vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no products derived from animals, as fur or leather.

And I would caution veggies - the rice bowl at Kona has a wonton shell which they cook in the same oil as Chicken fingers - ask them not to.
Maybe you could ask for it without the shell? It would be healthier that way, anyway! :)

Gosh, do you try to talk your vegetarian daughter out of eating grains because you think they're not vegetarian?? :earsgirl:

I thought this dish at Coral reef was quite good:

Vegetarian Entree - roasted acorn squash, butternut squash, spinach, tomato and mushrooms $16.00

This was good at Jiko, along with some veggie appetizers:
Grains, Peas and Veggies - black garbanzo peas, kamut, wheat berries, quinoa, pearl and black barley with roasted vegetables and seared tandoori tofu $17.50

Ah, thanks for that tip... (just had that two weeks ago, it was yummy, but you're right, kind of false advertising.)

Prime Time Cafe: They have a vegetarian stuffed pepper which was SO good that I tried to recreate it at home. It came out well, but it's just always better at disney world! :)

I went to Prime Time this January, and they changed the pepper! Tricia, did the one you like have potatoes and tomato sauce and soy cheese? That was so tasty and I was really looking forward to it (I last had it about a year and a half ago), but it's totally different now. It's okay, but the other one was way better!

A tip for all: make a PS for Mama Melrose's and tell them you're a veggie. When you go to the restaurant on the day of the PS, tell the server you need a vegetarian or vegan meal, and ask for Chef Gary. He was awesome and helped me and my spouse create a wonderful meal.

No, I wait until she's asleep and play subliminal tapes which echo the mantra, 'our ancestors did not claw their way to the top of the foodchain so we could eat tofu' :rotfl:

Actually, I was wondering about that. It seems like it might be vegan now as opposed to before with the non-vegan soy cheese. I hope so! :) Last time I ate there, all they could offer was a Boca Burger, which was kind of disappointing for a full-service place.

Thanks for the tip on Mama Melrose's - I had the penne sans meat several times last year, and like it, last week it was blah blah blah. (literally no flavour - must have been an off day in the kitchen)

I gave up on Prime Time - was a combination of not liking the meal, and not being thrilled with 'dad' who did the serving every time I was there.....

oh nooo! I did have the pepper with soy cheese, mashed potatos and tomato sauce and I loved it. :guilty: I was really looking forward to that again this year.

tricia.

I hope I didn't ruin your looking forward to your trip! I figure if you're forewarned, the disappointment will wear off before you get there! ;)

Our DD is a vegetarian and we asked when we arrived at each restaurant to speak with a chef if she did not see anything she liked on the menu, then they figured out something to make for her together. They made a special pasta for her at O'Hana's (I do not recommend this restaurant for vegetarians, there is an open fire pit for cooking meat and most of their menu is meat!) and at the Brown Derby. She loves Boma and found lots to eat at Crystal Palace. She enjoyed the Stuffed Pepper at The Prime Time and another pasta dish at Whispering Canyon. They were very accomodating everywhere so don't be afraid to ask.Last year we just let her choose something from the menu but the choices were limited so from now on we will talk to a chef. Also they will tell you for sure what is in each dish. One of the chefs at Boma took her all around the Buffet and pointed out which dishes she could have.Happy Dining!!

Do you recall what they made her at the Brown Derby? I had some good meals there, but twice in the last six months had to have an appetizer only. Strangely, this was twice when the same manager was working, and there are several reports recently of BD going downhill. I used to love going there, but lately they don't seem very responsive. I'd love to go back, but don't want another bad experience.

Ah! I became vegetarian when I was 14. I'm now 48, and have never wavered, despite liking bacon before I became vegetarian! My mother thought I was "going through a phase." pirate:

Same here for both DH and myself. Our parents finally gave up on us around the age of 30 (we are both 45 now). I am sure we both had our favorite non-vegetarian things before we 'started our phase'.

Oh, and about WDW....one reason we love it SO much is because there is many items we can try at different restaurants. It is great! We go for the food as much as the resorts and attractions!

Agreed! I'm thrilled WDW has vegetarian options. And DH (who is not vegetarian) mentioned once that he LOVES being hungry at WDW because that means it's time to sit down to another meal. :goodvibes

We ate at Chefs de France last weekend and I thought the baked macaroni and cheese was one of the best meals I've had at WDW (right up there with the Rainforest Cafe veggie burger). I've heard the best table-service meals are at the resorts--we haven't even eaten any table-service meals at the resorts yet, so we have a lot of new meals to look forward to!

I find this thread so interesting. My DD17 is vegetarian and as I think about the dining plan and eating at WDW it's great to know the inside track about how to get some interesting items for her to eat.

I'm actually glad she has gone vegetarian as I'm certain its more healthful for her and I feel it actually has improved the variety in her diet. She was always picky and would live on starches and white meat chicken. Now since the meat is gone she experiments with more grains and vegetables and I see her eating horizons broadening.

Do you think a vegetarian still gets a good value on the DDP????. I know it's a great value when ordering a steak or high end seafood but if just ordering a meatless pasta will it still be a good value and do they have a number of appetizers that are meatless (She's not a lettuce fan so salads are not her thing) Of course thankfully almost all desserts are meatless!!

Okay, I've been reading this thread and biting my lip. However I can't take it any more and must say this for the sake of any non-vegetarians reading this.

If a meal has fish, it is NOT vegetarian. It is seafood. I've had well meaning, but uninformed people prepare me a meal with fish, thinking I'd eat it. If you have to kill an animal to prepare the meal, then it's NOT vegetarian. This also includes chicken or beef broth used for soups.

Okay, now I feel better. Thanks.

The OP did mention she was laco-pesco vegetarian (meaning: she eats fish) so that's probably why people were listing seafood dishes.

AND DONT FORGET THE GELATIN IN THE DESSERTS AND MARSHMALLOWS!!

OR THE RENNIT IN SOME CHEESE

Yeah, but the point is if you eat fish, you're not a vegetarian. A lot of people have misconceptions about what vegetarians eat, so people who call themselves vegetarian but eat fish are kinda not helping with that. :)

Sometimes it's very difficult and I find myself wanting to say, "Jiminy Christmas, just eat a flippin cheesburger like the rest of us!!!!"
I eat cheeseburgers, they just are meat free! :thumbsup2 I may hit up Cosmic Ray's and their toppings bar when we go! :teeth:

Back on topic! My DH is a meat-eater, so we always have to find happy mediums when we dine out. Fortunately, we're both adventurous eaters. My favorite counter service meal is Columbia Harbour House in MK. I loved the sandwich and the veggie chili. Tasty and filling. I plan on trying Boma for the first time this trip. I've heard good and bad things about it, but I'm looking forward to it. I found some recipes from Boma at allears.net, and according to the recipes some of the desserts have gelatin in them (like the famous zebra domes), so that's out for me! I also haven't been to the Tangierine Cafe, but I plan on trying that place. I love Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, and so does DH. So he'd get some lamb thing probably while I get the veggie platter.

I got the book Vegetarian Walt Disney World and it's been helpful pointing out what's vegetarian/vegan and what's not. It is out of date for some restaurants I'm sure, but it gives one a good idea what kinds of things to watch out for when ordering food. What you think is veggie may not be.

ooooo- gnocci pomadoro at L'Originale Alfredo di Roma-- i dont think it is on the menu-- i just asked for it--- and had to go back another day just to get it again! YUM!
