Help before we make the plunge.

We walked away from this one due to all the knowledable people on this board. So what if we start around 1994 and work are way up? We talked it over and decided to finance one. This has been my life long dream and it turns out my wife is very interested since I brought this up. We both love camping but sleeping in a tent is getting harder and harder to do. We decided also to keep the mileage under 30,000. Do you agree with this or what do you recommend?. We can have payments up to 300 dollars a month so this is where we are at. Is it true that this is considered a second home and is tax deductible? Say it isn't so!!:confused3 Also should we buy from a dealer or a individual? Again thanks everyone.

Yeah, it will count as a second home for federal income tax purposes as long as it has sleeping quarters, a bathroom and cooking facilities. That means your financing interest is tax deductible like your home mortgage interest.

If you buy from a dealer, you may pay more but you should also get a warranty of some kind. Take it out for a test ride, check everything out and make sure it is all fixed and then take it out for another test ride and check everything again before you pay up.

Make sure you research, research and then do some more research.

Have fun, good luck and ask away.

SInce we are all being SOOOO agreeable I will agree with John (I would have anyways but then I wouldnt have gotten to make the sarcastic remark :thumbsup2 )

Yup, it's tax deductible, ain't it great??

But seriously, if you're looking to finance it, check on other financing alternatives before just financing it through the dealer. We disappointed our dealer terribly by financing ours thru our credit union, but it was a much better deal. I think it was like, 4.74% for six years, and the little bit of interest we do pay is tax deductible.

Remember, the less interest you pay, the better the RV and the more frequent camping trips you can afford, so it's worth your efforts to shop around on financing! :goodvibes

Used motor homes are terribly bad purchases.....Especially older ones...

Terrible gas milelage......horrorendous maint. cost(tires, brakes, trans., appliances, engine, etc.)....Zero resale availability.....

Couple this with financial problems and you got your self the biggest boat anchor of your life........Instead of having fun as rving should be you will look at it in digust.....

I am a firm believer in the rving steps:

Tent--->Pop-up---->TT--->Motor Home

you learn all the ins and outs of rving without the dredded financial rope around your neck....:thumbsup2

I'd also try renting one to see if you can drive it. It's quite an investment to buy one, and while I agree one should try it out, tent camping and a 35' class A are quite different. If I had to camp in a tent here in FL, I'd be miserable, but I like my class A.

One other totally off the wall suggestion is if the only thing bothering you about tenting is sleeping on the ground, look into the following:

Great little campers, can be towed by just about anything. Of course this only works if you are empty nesters or don't have kids yet. (Or you can still set up a tent for the kids)

does it have to be a mh or could it be something else, like a tt or pop up i'm not suggesting you choose one over the other i'm just saying be sure you weigh all your options like cost of mh vs ? do you have a dependable tv, cost of insurance, cost of maintance and up keep, how long will the unit be setting between trips. just be sure to take your time and do your homework and you'll get the right unit for family thats why they make so many different kinds good luck and have fun
