Help!!!! Asbury Park area hotels.

What I always found shocking is that you see burned out, run down shacks or just plot after plot of vacant land that's oceanfront property, and you drive 4 miles south and you see $5 Million dollar beachfront houses on every street.

I remember when I lived near there in 2001 the rumor was that Michael Jackson bought all the oceanfront land and was going to build. Obviously that wasn't true. I'd love for someone like Donald Trump to get in there, tear the place apart, and build a strip of houses and condo's. At least it'd be better overbuilding it up than leaving it the way it is. I'm sure he's probably tried, but there is probably some development company standing in the way.

Danacara is right. Asbury has been trying to attract gay couples to come in a refurbish run-down victorians. Urban renewal on a grassroots level. Actually, real estate prices have been rising in AP due to this influx of people into the community.

AP has a very long way to go, though. The area surrounding the boardwalk is in shambles. The boardwalk itself is pretty much in shambles. New businesses in AP's downtown have opened and hopefully can remain open.

AP is a huge goldmine waiting to happen. At this point, though, I wouldn't wander the streets at night.

hey Hill…those houses in Deal are un believable….

I once heard that Johnny Cash was about to purchase all of Ocean Ave but the deal fell through.

I also read somewhere that the city was so broke the “city fathers” started selling the copper off of the old Casino.

We drive around AP there are some great restored houses here and there. There are also tons of for sale signs…on the beat up houses…AP is a great investment. Sort of like downtown JC where I live…the prices of some of the brownstones that were burned out shells 10 or so years ago have sky rocketed.

Hey Danacara..I thought the same thing when I heard AP was jumping on the same sex marriage band wagon..

Hi gina2000.

Some day??

I'm starting to get a headache from the thought of this. Has anyone been to any of the concerts at Convention Hall in the past year? I am curious to know what it looks like now. I used to work shows there in the early eighties, it wasn't the greatest venue back then.
What I need to do is find out how crowded this event will be, how many people will be milling around etc. I guess I need to start calling hotels to see how booked they are to try and get a better grip on things.
Would anyone know the phone number of the local law enforcement agency down in that area? Maybe I should call them to find out what the security situation is like when they have events in town. Would the town hall be able to give me some info?

I saw Springsteen there this past December at Convention Hall. He does a set of Christmas shows there every Dec.

Look, AP is a shell. When a concert venue is in town, there are police out around the immediate area at the concert start and people are walking to and from their cars to get to the boardwalk. Beyond the areas that people are parking is a lower class neighborhood that can be dangerous at night. When a concert is over, there are a ton of people walking to their cars. I wouldn't walk any further than my parking space. If I were to stay at a hotel, it would be out of the immediate area. Walking from a hotel to the concert may be a major risk. I've never done it but based upon what I see there, I wouldn't.

Your daughter should be fine. Get her a hotel room out of the immediate vicinity and tell them drive to the concert. Tell them to park as close to the hall (I'm assuming it's at Convention Hall, right?) as they can. Stay together. People line up on the boardwalk outside of the hall waiting to get in. It's lit and populated. When the concert is over....don't dawdle. People go to their cars or to a couple of clubs in the area. But they drive to the clubs.

Hi, Charlie!

Good morning everyone! She is going to be in Asbury Park on April 17 and 18. The concert is actually a 3 day event, but she'll only go for the 2 days. It is at Convention Hall.
I did call the Berkley, but they only had Sun. night avalible. I called and reseved a room at the Laingdon Hotel. I think the owner said it is about a 15 minute walk down the boardwalk. He also said that there is one spot that is a little funky to walk through (sort of a casino type place?) and that obviously she should walk with someone. He told me it is a quike drive to AP and fairly direct. Also a cab would cost about $4.00.
Does anyone know more about the boardwalk from Asbury to Ocean Grove? I would much rather her walk from the hotel if it is possible and will be safe. She won't be alone, so that makes me feel a little better.

Ahhh Ok I know the event you are going to, a lot of my friends will be there! There is typically a pretty good range of ages that go their-mainly local teens and in their early 20's. The convention hall is pretty big, its right on the boardwalk. It's stadium seating, so her view of the show will be good wherever she's at. Just make sure she's prepared because they typically DO allow smoking in their, and it can become a little overwhelming to some people. Their is a huge lobby though where she can "escape" for a little while if she needs to, and I'm pretty sure this concert is an all day event, so it is very likely their will be food and merchandise vendors along the boardwalk as they do at Warped Tour.
As far as walking, I'd say take the cab (safety reasons, as everyone said, the area is pretty shady...but if outside waiting for a cab, there are guaranteed to be many teens/young adults waiting around with her)! The casino area he's referencing is most likely just the buildings where rides and stuff used to be located. Look for Tilly on one of the buildings! He's this demented looking figure painted on the carousel building with a chesire cat grin! Casino was transformed into a skatepark a while ago where they used to have shows (my bfs band played their a few times) However, that too got shut down.

Thanks everyone! So they'll just drive and park at the show or take a cab. I'm feeling better about this. The place that they will be staying has a web site and looks nice, it isn't cheap either so I don't think the local riffraff will be staying there.
I have a feeling my husband has spoken to different people to get a better idea of things because he isn't stressing out about her going. His main concern is that she stays at a safe, clean hotel. I'm usually the one saying he needs to lighten up!
