Has he ever seen the movie Space Camp?

I have the version that has the foul language taken out of it, so it's rated G. I used to show it to my Career Discovery class as part of the aerospace unit. I actually think I have two copies and am willing to send you one (I'm not in the classroom anymore) if you think he would like to have one. PM me and let me know.

Welcome from a neigboring southern state!

Hehehe, small world isn't it? My husband has a step brother who lives in Cullman, Dr. Hoover.:)

We also love the zoo here, we've actually had a yearly pass for our family for a couple of years. Of course we don't have one this year, and it would be the year the elephant exhibit opens. lol Our luck.

Dizfam4, I'm pleased to hear you guys like the area. We would have loved to buy a house in Millbrook (just about swooned over some of the houses this year in the Parade of Homes), but with our daughter's health problems we had to buy near my parents.

Good to see you got settled in. And, yes we know about the wait for stuff here. It took us a while to get our new counter tops in when we moved this summer. lol OH, and yes, 'fixin' is a good Southern verb. :rotfl:

Now for all you people who live near, if you need stamps don't forget to stop by. I work the post office by ASU. Just across the street from it.:) (I'm just not there today! Lots of back problems today.)

Amlee, yes, I love "coming home" - my parents still live there.

And bamajill, I'm class of '85 - and you almost certainly had my Dad for 12th grade English.

Oh my gosh! The world just got even smaller! Dr. Hoover lives two doors down from my parents! (on the other side of the people from Michigan!) I used to babysit for their daughters when I was in high school! (their son wasn't born until after I went away to college)

<shakes head in amazement>

Their son is about three months older than our daughter, and was also born with health problems. I dont' know how many times we just missed each other at Children's Hospital. He would have a surgery, our daughter would have one. And, then we would repeat! lol
We haven't seen them though, since his Mom's funeral about (gee the old brain here is very bad lately) three or four Thanksgiving's back. And, their daughter's were so grown then. It's so hard to believe now.;)
If you see or talk to them anytime soon, tell them John and Kim said hi!:)

These children even call their moms and dads "sir" or "ma'am".
OMG! I am dying laughing! :rotfl2: "Sir" and "ma'am" is instilled into us from time we're born. My 2 yr old already knows to say those words. Seriously, I cannot stop laughing. Thank you, I needed that big time.

You know that Southern's have to play connect the dots with people's life and I am going to connect another dot. My high school (DAR) basketball team use to play in the Cold Springs Thanksgiving tournament every year.

:rotfl2: How about this one. My 12th grade Home Ec teacher graduated from DAR and her dad was/is the principal of DAR.

Who is your home ec teacher? My aunt was ours when I was there.

I can't remember her first name, but her last name at the time was Myers or something along that line.

Just finding this thread and wanted to say "HEY Y'all"!

I am so glad you are enjoying Alabama so much! Millbrook is a great town isn't it? Our friends children go to Edgewood Academy and they seem to enjoy it.

Wait til summer. You are fairly close to several lakes and only a few hours to the Gulf. There are so many great getaway spots in Alabama. Mt. Cheaha and furthur North is Mentone.

Be sure to catch a play at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (especially at Christmas) and take in a Montgomery Biscuits baseball game.

Tell your Momma I said "Hey"! :rotfl:

We slice them in half lengthwise, and then in half again, to make big wedges. Like this:

Our neighbors from Michigan sliced theirs in cirles and then in half, like this:

I thought their way was less messy, but Mom said it was the "yankee" way to slice a watermelon and wouldn't slice ours like that - lol.

I couldn't eat a piece of watermelon that size. I guess those of us in MI have daintier appitites :rotfl2:

Was it Lauren Myers? Well there were three of teh Myers girls. Her dad was the high school basketball coach and her mother taught P.E. at one of the schools in the county. I seem to remember hearing that one or two of the girls went into education. They were several years younger than me.

I'm not sure of her first name. Maybe it was basketball coach. LOL that's been 12 years ago and I'm starting to have those senior moments! :rotfl: Let's see she was blonde and was a big tennis player. She was either the oldest or the middle girl. Because I remember her saying she has a younger sister.

I bet it was Lauren then. It's so funny how things connect.

LOL it just goes to show just how small the world really is and how the internet has made it a much smaller place!

I don't think she is teaching down here anymore. I heard she got married and moved back closer to home.

Did y'all know that Beauty and the Beast is playing this season at the Shakespeare Festival? We've already bought our tickets.:)

Hi everyone!

Now, to answer your questions...Yes....we are in Alabama. We moved to Millbrook, just outside of Montgomery in mid-September. I love the weather and the people here.

Right now, I am homeschooling my 5 1/2 year old kindergarten son (DDis only 2 1/2) until we decide on a private school for next year. I've visited a few schools trying to decide where to send him.

He is looking forward to going to space camp when he turns 9! (only 3 1/2 years away).

Welcome to Alabama!!!
I'm so glad that there were people from Montgomery on the board who were able to give you such great information!! :thumbsup2
I actually had no idea there were so many from Alabama on the board!! :cool1:

As for Space Camp...it's here in Huntsville, so be sure to get back in touch with me in 3 1/2 years and we'll have ourselves a mini-DIS meet! :rotfl:

I teach at a school that homeschools M/W and then we're on campus T/Th/Fr, so if you've got any homeschool questions, feel free to PM me! :goodvibes

As previous posters have mentioned, be sure you have your tornado safety plan in place (a weather radio is a MUST have!), and then get ready to laugh at your neighbors come first snow!!! :lmao: My family moved from Omaha, NE to Huntsville, and that first winter we just scoffed at everyone! I think it's important to understand that for us transplanted Yankees (that would be anyone who was not born in the South, even if the state did not exist back during that infamous war  ) the mention of the "s" word means that we join in the milk/bread/snacks buying and movie renting because it's just so much fun to contribute to the craziness. (Well, that and a chance to indulge in a lot of chocolate and chick flicks...because we're gonna be snowed in for, like, a week, right? ;) )

:goodvibes

Hey! Glad your move was smooth and you're enjoying Alabama!

My oldest son attended Space Camp last year and really enjoyed it. Keep it in mind because those 3 1/2 years will FLY by. Our kids attend the magnet schools here in Decatur and we couldn't be happier.

My husband is a Connecticut Yankee and I was born and raised in Florida but my Dad's family is from all over Morgan County here and this is "home". We've all come "home" over the last dozen years or so and while I would prefer a cooler climate in the summer DH would like never to shovel snow off a driveway again. So I guess we're here for awhile!

Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and ROLL TIDE!!!!
