Help: Alabama relocation ASAP!

There are Chick-fil-a's everywhere around here and they are wonderful!! :goodvibes

For goodness sake though... we can't have you going around saying War-Heads! It's War Eagle! And here's a little Auburn 101 for you - It's Auburn Univ, not the Univ of Auburn. And "War Eagle" is a battle cry; Aubie the Tiger is our mascot. Don't let people confuse you about this. Stand confident.

Practice the following a couple of times with your best Southern drawl and you'll fit right in!

Are you ready?
READY!
Count off...
1..2..3..
Bodda getta, bodda getta,
bodda getta bah!
Rah rah rah,
sis boom bah!
WEAGLE, WEAGLE
War Damn Eagle!
Kick 'em in the butt big blue,
HEY!

:cheer2:

I kinda liked the War Heads and thought it might catch on.

I just had to pipe in about the heat, it is supposed to be 110-115 heat index in Minnesota today which means MI will have this heat in another day or two. It isn't any hotter in AL then the upper Midwest in the summer (unless the OP is in the UP).

DH and I just vacationed at Gulf Shores Alabama and we loved the laid back area and beautiful beaches. So you have a nearby beautiful vacation spot to enjoy!

We found what seems like "Utopia" on our drive along the Mobile Bay in a tiny beautiful town named Fairhope.

Hi again everyone,

How embarassing...I called Auburn the "War Heads" - I'm just a dumb Michigander. :rotfl2: OK, I'll try it again,"Go, War Eagles!" How's that?

I love the Auburn cheer from OPer. My son thought it was cool that you guys say "kick em in the butt". (He's usually not allowed to say "butt", but I will make an exception for you guys!) 5 year olds are easily amused. ;)

I look forward to the beaches of Alabama for vacationing. Looking forward to a visit to the utopian town OPer mentioned as well.

I think we'll try to aim for Prattville/Millbrook. It will be a drive for DH, but he said he'd do it if it meant that we could send them to public schools. Private schools are so expensive.

I can't tell you how much this information has helped me feel good about our move. I am really excited to sell our house and head south.

It is nasty hot and humid today here in MIchigan. It's getting me ready for Disney in a few weeks and for our new "home" in Alabama.

It's too bad that there are no Steak n Shakes, but I'll make the sacrifice if a Chick-fil-a is on every corner. :thumbsup2 Thanks ya'll!!

We have Steak & Shakes in Mobile. Plus, I don't know if you like BBQ, but our state has some of the best!

Another Howdy from Alabama! :wave2: War Eagle!

But no Steak n Shakes

Pull for Auburn if you must. But just remember our coach is much better looking! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Roll Tide Roll!!!
Mobile has a Steak and Shake!!! BTW, isn't Montgomery's baseball team called the biscuits?? :rotfl:

By the way, there is a Steak-n-Shake in Prattville. I'm in Birmingham, but we were in Prattville/Millbrook last month for a softball tournament.

Welcome to Alabama.

P.S. It's only 81 degrees here at 12:45 in the afternoon.

I'm from Auburn (in TN now for 12 years) and the best advice you have received so far is to be an AUBURN fan! And remember, when it comes to football, in Alabama the "Iron Bowl" is the national championship game!

WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!! Class of 84!

War Eagle! :cheer2:

Sounds like you are going to fit in just fine---- Now that you know the right team to pull for!! :goodvibes

Okay, let me see if I remember this correctly.
On the main drive in Prattville, they have....
A new Mexican place, Arby's, Longhorn, Chick Fil A, Applebee's, Ryan's, Sonic, and a Shoney's, and that's all I can remember right now. (My family keeps interrupting me):)
And, probably more. And, at the next exit, middle one on the interstate, they have a Cracker Barrel.
They also have a Michael's, Super Walmart, several grocery stores, Publix, Winn dixie, etc...
And, you you will probably get a real good deal on a house here for your money.:)
Kim oh and btw, it is War Eagle! :teeth:

I feel so lucky to have all of this information. Thanks to everyone who posted. It helps to know some big details (like schools, towns, etc.) and also some little stuff (like there is a Super Walmart and a Chick-fil-a). I feel better about the whole thing. Now, we have to sell our house. The MIchigan economy is tough right now, so I'm praying it doesn't take too long. My kids will miss their daddy and we all want to be together in our new home. Thank you so much to all the posters!

I'm "way up north" in Huntsville but wanted to say welcome to Alabama too! I've lived in Alabama all my life and would find it extremly hard to move elsewhere - it's a great place to be . . .

especially if you are an Auburn Tiger fan!

War Eagle!!!

:thumbsup2

From one Yankee to another.

If you like BBQ and order a shredded BBQ sandwich, make sure to request the slaw on the side, otherwise they put the coleslaw on the sandwich. When we were stationed at RedStone, Huntsville, our friends took us out for BBQ and forgot that we were NOT accustomed to the southern way to eat BBQ.

Needless to say, the one friend was really hungry and he ate my sandwich and I got another one, minus the slaw.

Okay, you've been deluged with info, but I am another DISser who lives in Montgomery.

The traffic is going to be a headache from Prattville to South Montgomery, but I do agree with everyone else who said that if you are given the choice, you may want to live there.

Some private schools are more affordable than others and there are several to choose from.

BTW, there are no set rules for cities and football loyalties. ;) There are several Bama fans in Montgomery, I can assure you. Heck, you can even still say you like Michigan since it is "home". You just can't pull for Florida or Tennessee. However, the sun will continue to rise (for most of us anyway) no matter who is winning.

Snow is rare once you get south of Clanton/Birmingham so I think you can rule out most blizzards. Of course, we consider any accumulation that sticks to the ground to be an emergency situation. ;)

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about the area.

I don't know anything about Alabama. But I do know about moving sight unseen, and I highly advise against it. Even though it might cost a little money, it would be well worth it to go to the city you will be living in and see if you will like it. If you hate it, it may take you a long time to get out.

Roll Tide Roll!!! :cheer2:

Also, if you are a big American Idol fan, remember that AL is the home state of Ruben Studdard, Bo Bice and Taylor Hicks!

But every educated Alabamian knows which is the better academic school ::yes::

Thanks to sociology professors, of course!

(Sorry, Pug, couldn't resist!)

Don't be so quick to drink the koolaid, OP! You don't have to be an Auburn fan just because the campus is up the road. You can just as easily still root for Michigan, or of course, root for the state's finest football tradition, entrenched in history, and much better looking colors. And coach, I might add. :cheer2:

ROOOOOLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!

Hey there!!

I live in Montgomery. I haven't read more then the first 5 or 6 posts so everyone else may have answered your questions but you can pm me if you want.

I can send you my home email and you can email me there if you want. Cool - another DISer in montgomery!!
