So my 4yo who has gotten car sick before threw up in grand fashion as we were landing tonight in Miami. It was during a part of the flight that was hot and bumpy so I am fairly certain it is motion sickness. He has continued to throw up every 20 min since then (last 3 hours) and still no fever or other symptoms.

What should I do? We are due to join the rest of my husband's family on the wonder in less than 12 hours. I need to get it stopped and get something to help him onboard. Should i take a taxi and find some kiddie Dramamine or just wait till I am on the ship?

Anyone else experienced extended nausea hours after getting off the plane?

Should my youngest and i not get on the ship?

I sitting in a dark hotel room in Miami wondering what the heck to do!!!

Take him to urgent care and get some zofran. I would be really concerned about vomiting every 20 mins for hours. Is he drinking anything in between to fight off dehydration?

Also I doubt the ship has kiddie Dramamine. I have a daughter prone to motion sickness and bought Dramamine for our last cruise, the box stated ages 2 and up so I was expecting a chewable, but nope it was a pill which she couldn't swallow. She was pretty miserable for large portions of the cruise. They do make chewable kid Dramamine but it is hard to find.

I am so sorry to hear this!

I agree, take him to urgent care for medicine. You will have to fill out health questionnaires prior to boarding and they ask about vomiting...either you lie about it and board or you risk not being granted access to the ship. If you do lie...there may be repercussions if you end up in the infirmary on board later...because I would assume you would have to tell the truth about how long the vomiting has been happening to the doctor.

I really hope that you are able to get the medications needed to help so you are able to have a WONDERful vacation!

Am I the only one that thinks vomiting every 20 minutes for 3 hours (so far) sounds like something other than motion sickness? Definitely take him to Urgent Care. If the doc at Urgent Care thinks it is something more than motion sickness, don't get on the ship.

Depending on the individual motion sickness can last several hours after the motion stops. Definitely a crappy situation. Id get him to the doctor ASAP and hope for the best. I would wait to make the call about boarding until it gets closer to time. A lot can happen in 12 hours.

It could totally be a virus vs. Nausea. The only reason i lean towards nausea is bbecause of the very specific timing of the first wretch

We have slowed down and it spaces to 40 minutes and now it has been an hour. i spoke with my doctors office and they werent concerned and confirmd that motion sickness is very individual. For most it subsides when the motion does. Not all.

Fingers crossed! I don't plan on lying but should look again at those medical preboarding forms. I heard they are newish post-ebola.

I have no interest taking a sick kid on a ship!

I found a children's urgent care that opens at 10. So if no resolution. , we will head there at 930. Hopefully that gives enough time to address, get back to hotel and then head to port.

What I don't know is if I should send DS9 and DH if DS4 illness doesn't resolve. Ugh...can we board and agree to be guaranteed? There is room for DS9 and Dh in his brother's second room.

I would definitely get some child's dramamine then, for the cruise. I'm not one to suggest drugs usually, but if his motion sickness is that bad from a flight?

  • Another vote for medical attention. There will be a health screening before you board. If your son is not stable, they may refuse him to board. Having seen an medical expert and medication means a stronger likelyhood you will be allowed to board.
  • Once on boat your medication will be limited. You want to get whatever anti-nausea medication you need PRIOR to boarding.
  • hope you are packing paper towers, paper bags, plastic bags and lysol wipes to self clean the cabin
  • does your cabin have a private verandah? How high up are you?

You could also try sea bands. They are a soft stretchy terry cloth that you wear like a bracelet around both wrists. There is a little plastic disc on it that sits on a pressure point. They worked great for my daughter.

This same thing happened to us on our trip last February with out 2 year-old who has a sensitive stomach except we drove 14 hours into Miami. He did fine until we literally drove into the Miami city limits when he began vomiting over and over. This continued while he was at the hotel that evening but he never had a fever or other signs of an infection.

The following day we were very nervous but he did fine without another incident, so we went on and boarded late in the afternoon. He did fine the rest of the day but the next morning got seasick at breakfast. We had to give him dramamine which knocked him out until the afternoon and made him groggy for most of that day.

From then on he got a dose of dramamine in the evening before bed. He slept great, never had another seasickness episode, and the grogginess wore off by the time he was awake for the day. I would consider premedicating in a similar fashion.

DD gets pretty bad motion sickness and DS has even had it from flights as well. There are meltable/dissolving kids Dramamine and there will be a lot more available at a drugstore near the port than other places I've found. Walgreens seems to be the best for variety and usually has what we need. I would also get some childrens bendryl. Once the motion sickness subsides a little bit you may be able to use this instead of the heavier Dramamine. It is less likely to make your little one sleepy and often does as good a job if the problem isn't severe. Although it was obviously pretty severe initially. Look for some absorbent barf bags too. Peppermint can be helpful as well as ginger although ginger tends to be too spicy for little ones. And these are for when it's just a tummy ache not full on vomiting.

Best of luck and a healthy trip for you all!

So sorry to hear! Praying for both of you, I think the worry can be harder than the event! If he's a little guy, try to get him to just rest, when I had seasickness (never ever had a problem with motion sickness before in my life, I ride all kinds of crazy fair rides and water-skied a lot as a kid) the ONLY thing that helped was laying flat and resting...hopefully, if he can lay flat and get some rest he'll start to feel better...keep checking for fever just in case, there is a violent stomach flu that is going around that only lasts for 24 hours...but it is wretched! Hope you both get some rest!

Poor kid!! I get extremely motion sick when I fly and even in the car and it doesn't go away until I sleep.

Hope they made it on the ship and are enjoying a great vacation. The fact that the mom hasn't checked back in leads me to believe they made it on board.

We have cruised several tunes with our dd,3. She is prone to motion sickness. Just a heads up on dosing Dramamine at night. On a carnival cruise we took with relatives. Our daughter and niece both had the opposite reaction of drowsiness after taking Dramamine at night. Neither could sleep until 4/5 in the morning. Our niece was 9 and was bouncing off the walls and hallucinating. A few nights later my 2 year old cried from 12-4 saying she didn't know how to sleep or close her eyes. Defiantly a horrible night and I now dose much earlier in the day.

of Dramamine.
dd has some of the same reactions to different meds.
we used the non drowsy for the day.then the reg for night.
also used the sea bands.and sitting out on the veranda helped also.
dw and dd has problems with motion sickness the 1st night but then it levels out.
she starts on meds before we even get on the ship.just to get ready for it.
