Helmets

According to the rules (and apparently FL state law), yes. According to experience, no one brings a helmet!

If you are under the age of 16 in the state of Florida and riding a bike you need to wear a helmet

What would you do with a helmet while it is parked and you are at MK? My DH is an EMS pilot, and has flown head injuries from not wearing helmets. So we are kinda helmet nazi's. We want to bring our bikes next time but didn't think about what to do with the helmet if you ride it to the boat launch and go to the parks all day.

There are lockers available at the marina. I don't know the cost - but I think they have about 40 lockers.

Lock the helmet(s) to the bike(s).

We bicycle, we wear helmets, ALWAYS.

When DW and I had a bicycle shop back North we had a young customer who fell while riding his 20" bike. Sadly, he was in a coma for some time and suffered permanent injury. Very sad since a helmet most likely would have prevented the injury.

Please make sure the young ones wear helmets.

We always make the kids wear helmets, and just lock them on the bike lock, when we are at the park, we use long cable locks and they work well.

Does FL law apply to private property or just public roads?
Florida law is restricted to public roads. But, there is a provision in the law to allow private land owners (like homeowners associations, shopping centers or places lik FW) to sign rights over to the the local law enforcement authority. It is my understanding that Disney has in fact executed such an agreement with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and they are empowered to enforce traffic laws on Disney property. This power is codified in FSS 316.006:

(3) COUNTIES.--

(a) Counties shall have original jurisdiction over all streets and highways located within their boundaries, except all state roads and those streets and highways specified in subsection (2), and may place and maintain such traffic control devices which conform to the manual and specifications of the Department of Transportation upon all streets and highways under their original jurisdiction as they shall deem necessary to indicate and to carry out the provisions of this chapter or to regulate, warn, or guide traffic.

(b) A county may exercise jurisdiction over any private road or roads, or over any limited access road or roads owned or controlled by a special district, located in the unincorporated area within its boundaries if the county and party or parties owning or controlling such road or roads provide, by written agreement approved by the governing body of the county, for county traffic control jurisdiction over the road or roads encompassed by such agreement.

Cartman wear one

I only recommend wearing a helmet if you have an aversion to becoming a vegetable and ultimately a burden on your family.

We left our helmets hanging on our handle bars while we went to the parks for the day. We never locked them up, at all while at the Fort.

A lady who works with my SIL was riding her bike last week when a car turned in front of her and she hit them. She was wearing a helmet and still sustained some pretty bad bruises on her face. She was on her road bike as she called it and said when she rides her beach cruiser she doesn't wear a helmet but no matter what she will use one all the time now.

I see kids all the time without one and it is not enforced. I bought my daughter a nice $50 helmet that she hardly uses but maybe this thread will make me enforce it.

the rule at our house is:
the bike comes with the helmet, you can't have one without the other.PERIOD
but I am "nazi"mom and they know I mean it. :-)

In the days (1982) before helmets were the norm, a truck didn't see me riding on the white line on the side of the road and hit me. I had a pretty bad concussion and was out for quite awhile. It took a lot of nerve to get back on a bike at all. My husband participates in sprint triathlons and always wears a helmet because the drivers in Orlando seem to think bicyclists are a target. My dd at age 5 went head over heels in a state park and sustained face trauma and lost a permanent front tooth. Without her bike helmet we wouldn't have her with us the emergency room doc said. Helmets are the law for all kids under 16 in FL, and even if there wasn't a law past history and experience makes us wear them. Don't be a statistic and don't make your kids one either. Keep them safe. Set an example and wear yours too! Don't make a rule that you won't follow yourself.

On our recent trip we just hung the helmets on the bikes' handlebars while in the parks. No problema. We locked the bikes, but not the helmets. Worked great!

My kids always wear one at the Fort and we just hang them on thier bikes while we are at the parks. We have never had an issue. Heck we don't even lock our bikes up!!!
