Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

OH, MY GOSH!! Sorry for shouting, but those are wonderful pictures! I like all of them (although you didn't ask for my opinion). I especially like the one in front of the lagoon of your 3 where Princess is holding Pickle. What a lovely family! Beautiful grandchildren, all of 'em.

Stephanie! Great photos of the resort! I find GF to be a little intimidating at the thought of staying there but getting to see the resort, sans lobby, makes it seem a lot more relaxing and more whimsical! (lol, not that I'll be able to afford GF anytime soon! :faint:) Thanks so much for sharing!

Matt! The family photos are so precious! I have no idea how you are going to choose from all of them!(Thank goodness we live in the digital age now!) You have one good looking family! (And so do your parents!! :goodvibes)

GF is such a great location to do a photo shoot. You have such a lovely family and got some really good options there.

Alone time is a great cure for too much togetherness. We all need it now and then, especially on vacation.

Great photos of GF! Such a beautiful resort!

It is really nice to get some alone time on vacation, but can be hard to pull off! I think it's easier to make happen now that the kids are older.

Great update Stephanie! Yay for Mom service. :) The Gasparilla Island Grill looks really nice and the food looks great.

The pictures of the resort are gorgeous. It really is a beautiful resort!

It really is beautiful. We had been to the lobby and eaten at 1900 Park Faire on previous trips, but we had never explored the grounds before. There are flowers everywhere (even on the trash cans,) and it looked like the groundskeepers went so far as to spray paint dead grass green, which we thought was rather funny.

I was really surprised by how much I liked the GF, because I felt similarly to you. The first thing that I noticed, however, was how awesome the cast members are--every single one of them. I think they really tip the scale towards the resort being friendly rather than intimidating. I also wasn't sure that the theming of the resort was as interesting as some others, but I found that I enjoyed it a lot. It really is more laid back and relaxing than you might think, and I think the whimsy and Disney vibe come through the incredible views and location. I hope you get to knock the Grand Floridian off your bucket list some day! :thumbsup2

What amazing updates! All of your pictures are great, and the pictures of your family are just adorable. The resort is photogenic, your family is photogenic!

The pictures of all of you are amazing, just so beautiful : ) I thought you had a professional photographer unless a few of you are? Really outstanding and I love the ones by the lagoon with the GF on the background too ... So gorgeous!! Beautiful location and beautiful family so of course so amazing! Thanks for sharing : )

Beautiful family pictures!! There are definitely some fireplace worthy pictures there. :)

That's too funny! I bet they do spray paint the dead grass, to keep it looking up to the standards of the rest of the grounds. :)

Great report..

Hello from another STL DISfamily... well St. Charles Co :wave2:

Just spent almost the entire day reading your trip report! I had all these plans to get stuff done around the house, but I couldn't pull myself away. I kept saying, just one more, LOL! You have a beautiful family, and I love your photos! The installment about Walt's hometown, Marceline, was great. Thanks for a great read! :goodvibes

On a side note, you remind me so much of one of my favorite talk radio personalities on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, out of Philly, Chris Stigall, who is also from Missouri!

Thank you for the kind words too. No professional photographers here. I have an interest in photography, nothing too serious... I don't even have an SLR. But I do have a decent camera with smaller interchangeable lenses. I've got a lot to learn, but I have some of the basics down about getting the right aperture setting for a blurred background and stuff like that.

I'm loving your report - ahh to stay at the Grand Floridian! Thanks for sharing

Thanks RachelleBeaney. Nice to have you reading along. :hippie:

Beautiful family pictures!! There are definitely some fireplace worthy pictures there. :)

Thanks Kelley!

Small world! We are in St. Charles Co. too. We have driven to Florida a bunch over the years and it doesn't really seem like much now. With iPads and DVD players these days, we don't get the "are we there yet?" and "how much longer" questions like we used to. We plan to drive to Disneyland next summer, so that'll make the drive to Orlando look like a day trip. LOL. Nice to have you reading along. :cool1:

Ha! I can see the resemblance. I'm guessing he must be a cool dude. LOL.

Day 9 - Wednesday the 11th - Part 6 - ‘Ohana Means Family

We had ADR’s for the entire group to eat at ‘Ohana that evening at around 5pm. It couldn’t have been more appropriate for a big group meal, because as Lilo says in the movie, “Ohana means family” ‘Ohana is one of my all time favorite WDW restaurants. It doesn’t necessarily have the best food, but the combination of its location at the Poly, the cool tiki atmosphere, fun entertainment, and good food make it hard to beat. And who doesn’t love coconut races and Lipoa with her ukulele?

We hopped on the monorail and headed around the loop to the Poly. Luckily, we didn’t have any of the transportion issues that plagued us earlier in the week. We walked across the lobby and my mom got us checked in.

I LOVE the Poly, but it was strange being inside with all the construction going on. They had the center area boarded up, so it felt like walking through a hallway instead of passing through this amazing two story atrium with a fountain in the middle. Oh well, it only affected the general vibe you get outside the restaurant, but once we were inside, it was classic Ohana through and through.

My dad and I headed to the bar to grab a couple drinks. I had a Mai-Tai and my mom and Stephanie had these frozen drinks.

It’s funny because my dad ordered them and couldn’t remember what they were called and they weren’t on the menu. He called them volcano’s or something. They were coconut based, and Stephanie was in heaven with hers. Does anyone know what they are called?

A few minutes later, they called us from the lobby waiting area to the "staging area” just outside the restaurant.

While we waited to be seated, we had fun hanging out and soaking in the ambiance.

Stephanie enjoying her mystery drink

Cassie and Randy

And Louie

A few minutes later, we were escorted past the main kitchen on our way to our table. I love that you can watch so much of the food being prepared.

We were seated in the main dining area in front of the fire pit. Nice!

It's funny though… We stayed at the Poly in 2003 on our first big family trip with my parents and Cassie’s family. We’ve all been back separately several times, but not as a big group again. This is the exact same table that we sat at back then. With today being "Throwback Thursday" and all, here's Princess, Huey, and Louie from that meal about 11 years ago.

I couldn’t resist walking up to the grill area to take a closer look!

It must be hot back there!

Looking good!

So we all took our seats and then they brought out some bread pretty quickly. It was the ‘Ohana Pineapple-Coconut Bread. Very tasty!

And then bowls of Mixed greens salad (with lilikoi dressing) to share. And from my dabbling in tiki cocktails, I’ve learned that lilikoi is actually passion fruit. Also very tasty!!!

And then a few rounds of appetizers.

The Pork dumplings (tossed in garlic-ginger sauce.) One of the highlights for me… these things were outstanding!!!

And then we had some honey-coriander chicken wings, noodles (tossed in a teriyaki sauce), and fresh vegetables. So good!

And lettuce wraps

Day 9 - Wednesday the 11th - Part 7 - A Relaxing Evening

A few minutes later, the coconut races started. It's strange to think that Princess and Buddy are too old for this now, but Pickle, Chip, and Dale all had fun giving it a go.

Denise and Steve both had pineapple coctails. So cool!

Ad then they started bringing out the skewers of meat, which included Sweet-n-Sour Pork Loin, Szechuan Sirloin Steak, and Spicy Grilled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp.

Here's the pork.

And a blurry shot of the shrimp

I didn't get a photo of the steak. I guess I gave up on photos for a while and focused on actually enjoying my food :cool1:

Cassie and Randy enjoying their meal. :thumbsup2

And Princess was getting stuffed and about to go in a food coma. :rotfl2:

But wait, what about desert?!?!? They brought out Ohana Bread Pudding à la mode with Bananas-Caramel Sauce. Yum!

And brownies for the kids.

Pickle turned 7 two days ago, but we are still celebrating.... So make a wish!

Lipoa came out again with her ukulele and played songs as she made her way around the restaurant. I think she's been there pretty much every time we've visited starting with that time when Princess was a three year old. We chatted with Lipoa and shared stories about our past visits with her. Such a neat lady. Shaka!

And then a few minutes later, we hopped up and were ready to go.

After dinner, it was about 7pm. We were all fairly tired and were catching up to Princess's food coma, so we decided to go hang out back at the hotel instead of heading to one of the parks.

I think I can. I think I can...

We decided to visit in the seating area of our building's lobby. I headed up to one of the upper floors for a photo opp!

I had noticed that the coffee table on the other side of the lobby was fairly dusty earlier in the day, but I laughed when I saw what someone had done to this one. It was now June 11, so that had been there for at least a day. (It had been dusted away by the next afternoon.) :rotfl2:

Hey look, Baby is awake!!!

We visited until about 9:30pm and then headed back up to our rooms to settle in for the night. It was early entry for Magic Kingdom the next morning, and then Buddy, my dad, Uncle Steve, and I had plans to get up even earlier for the steam train tour. We needed to get a good nights sleep in order to be ready for another big day at Walt Disney World :wizard:

Of course, I'm not surprised, but Pickle currently looks so much like Princess did in the TBT picture w/ the boys.

If I can ask, when you travel w/ such a large group, who does the planning? I don't know if I could give up control, but I shouldn't be in charge of someone else's vacation. Write on! :thumbsup2

Oooooooohh!!!! I love that overhead shot down on the family in the lobby! Its fantastic!

Yay for Ohana! Never dined there but thats where we are going to have DBF's birthday dinner on our trip. Love all the food pics! I'm worried/sad as well about the lobby being all boarded up. Can't wait to finally see it all done! I hope its fantastic!

My mom was the ring leader for this trip. My parents have been to WDW more than any of us, as they go several times a year (and often stay in Orlando for weeks/months at a time in the winter.) So, my mom is pretty much the expert in our family. My dad knows his stuff, but he's so laid back that he goes along for the ride. (He'd be happy sitting on a park bench eating popcorn and people watching all day at the Magic Kindgom or EPCOT.) We tend to very much be on the same page with my parents so we practically never have any conflicts with them. If I was to trust anyone besides Stephanie to make WDW plans for me, it would without a doubt be my mom. (For example, she pretty much planned our our Star Wars Weekends day and I wouldn't have done it any differently myself.) So that helps a lot!!!

In this case, my parents proposed the Polynesian and a date to everyone first (about a year ago) and got confirmation that everyone was in. My mom started watching for discounts and stuff, and also watched the news from Tikiman about the Poly construction project. Last Fall, it wasn't looking to be good timing for the construction in June, so she took a survey from everyone and asked if we'd rather play it safe and move to the Grand Floridian, or if we wanted to risk having no pool and lots of construction at the Poly. The consensus from everyone was that we love the Poly, but didn't want to have the experience diminished by the construction. I think we made the right call. So my mom booked all the rooms for everyone and managed the special requests about our location, adjoining rooms, etc.

My mom was also in charge of park tickets, and she watched for deals and timing of when to buy them. She also coordinated the PhotoPass for the group. (Although I helped her with that.)

As far as meals went, my parents took a survey of how much dining everyone wanted to do. My sister and her family tend to avoid a lot of table service meals as they prefer to eat smaller meals/snacks throughout the day and also their ability to live in the moment without being tied down by reservations. My family has done it both ways, we've had the dining plan a few trips and a lot of trips where we didn't splurge on food. Each style tends to have its pros and cons, but this was our first trip in the busy summer season and with FP+, so we decided that we didn't want to be tied down to too many ADR's and FP+ times. Denise's family was happy to do whatever my parents wanted. So the consensus, was that we only wanted to have a couple big table service meals as a group. We took a vote, and 'Ohana and Be Our Guest were the winners. And we "had" to go Cinderella's Royal Table for Pickle's birthday. At that point, my mom arranged all the ADR's for the entire group. (Including a couple meals for themselves and Denise's family.)

As far as rides and FP+ go, we knew better than to try and plan those all out together as a large group. So we touched base a couple times as we all made our own daily plans and kept in mind the gatherings at Ohana, Pickle's birthday, the train tour, etc. It turned out that we had a lot of overlap. Probably because we've all been enough to know how to work early entry and what not, that we often ended up with very similar schedules.

So, in summary, my mom was the primary planner, but she didn't do it in a vacuum. It's great that she was able to strike a nice balance between allowing the individual families to have enough freedom to do whatever they wanted, but to also have a few key moments scattered throughout the week where we all stuck together as a big group.

I hope that helps :cool1:

It's indeed a bummer that the lobby is boarded up, but it wasn't too much of a distraction. If I had planned to stay at the Poly all week, I think that's when I would have been really disappointed. Having to wonder what's going on behind those walls every single time you boarded the monorail. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time celebrating Andy's birthday at 'Ohana on your trip. :thumbsup2
