Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

Ack! What a great start to SWW!! And while I can't imagine waiting 2.5 hours for a parade sounds it was a nice experience ending in a fantastic parade!! :goodvibes

I know this was Mark Hamill's first time at SWW but I'm thinking he'll be back. All the pictures and reports I have seen he just looks so happy and gleeful. I don't think he really realized what it was all about before. lol

I had to read the Star Wars post on my phone next to my husband so I could show him all the pictures and read it to him. He was geeking out. I think he was plotting a future trip. :goodvibes
The pictures are great and it looks like so much fun.

Great updates! The Star Wars parade looks really cool, and you were able to get some great pictures! My nephews are just getting into Star Wars so I can see a future trip to one of the weekends at Disney. :)

Seems like there is a lot to see for SWW so, in some ways, it was cool that you were just going with the flow. If you had a long list of "must dos" it probably would have been hard to do them all

The parade looks fun - especially to seem Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams - though it doesn't look like "getting in fighting shape" was a pre-requisite for Mark for the new movies :rotfl:

Also cool that the kids that do the Jedi Academy get to march in the parade - must be a thrill for them. And props to that kid with the Boba Fett outfit!

Must have been weird for Ray Park to be up on stage next to Darth Maul

Glad you thought the wait was worth it! Nothing worse than waiting that long for something you are excited about and being disappointed

I would have been completely geeking out to see Billy Dee Williams and Mark Hamill! I don't really care about the Clone Wars but the original cast is awesome!

I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but glad you had a good time. Looks like you had a great spot for the parade!

Yeah, it really was a great spot. I was happy to be able to get some good close up photos :cool1:

I haven't been to star wars at HS but that parade looks like it would of been fun. I had a friend there that same week and he posted a picture of himself with Mark Hamill .

Cool! I didn't see him interacting close up with people, so your friend lucked out!

Happy and gleeful is a great description. He seemed to be enjoying himself a lot. And it was fun to see that he had a Magic Band on too! I wonder if it felt like he was using the force to open his hotel room door :rotfl2:

It really was cool. I hope he was indeed plotting a future trip :lmao:

Thanks! I think it would be fun to share the experience with kids who are interested in Star Wars. Unfortunately, none of my kids are really interested in SW anymore. :goodvibes

Yeah, easier said than done, but I've found Disney to be more fun it you "let it go" and just go with the flow. :hippie:

That's funny about not being in fighting shape. It was interesting that Mark mentioned that he was the same age now that Alec Guinness was when he portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IV.

looks like a great family trip Im here.

Welcome!!!

I would have been completely geeking out to see Billy Dee Williams and Mark Hamill! I don't really care about the Clone Wars but the original cast is awesome!

I feel the same way! So cool to see childhood heroes after all these years!

Great day with your parents at DHS and the Star Wars events : ) you really had a great spot for the parade and nice character meets. Love your Mom's popcorn bucket .... Fun day!!!

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 3 - D-Tech Me and Mark Hamill

Well, I got the cast removed yesterday. Huge milestone. I've got to wear a splint for a couple weeks, but I can't begin to tell you how good it felt to be able to rub and scratch my arm. And, I can type much easier now too :thumbsup2

All right... after the parade finished up, we headed over to use our FP+ for Star Tours. My dad decided that he preferred to relax on a bench while my mom and I went on the ride.

There really wasn't much of a wait, just a few minutes. Hello C3PO :wave2:

Selfie time

My mom is the best!

This was my first time riding the new version at Hollywood Studios, but I had ridden the new version in Disneyland a couple times last year. Basically the same thing, but the queue in WDW is MUCH better. I miss pee-wee herman driving the old one, but the new ride sure is awesome!

After Star Tours, we decided to go find my dad and eat lunch before heading over to Darth's Mall for a 1pm "D-Tech Me" experience. We grabbed a couple photos of the banner by his bench...

We didn't have a lot of time to eat, so we decided to just eat at what was closest... Backlot Express. This is possibly my least favorite restaurant in all of Disney, but sometimes you eat for pleasure and sometimes you eat because you'll die if you don't :rotfl2:

I never order this kind of stuff, but on an impulse I ordered spicy buffalo chicken nuggets. They actually weren't too bad.

My parents decided to split a pressed turkey club. They seemed to enjoy it well enough.

All right, now that we got the sustenance taken care of, it was time to head over to Darth's Mall, which is basically next door to the Toy Story ride. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, Darth's Mall is the big temporary shopping area with tons of Star Wars merchandise.

We had an appointment for D-Tech Me, so we got to skip the line and go straight inside. Awesome!!!

We headed straight to the back.

And checked in at the D-Tech Me booth.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, well they basically scan your head (using 3D imaging technology) and then put your head on a Stormtrooper, X-Wing Fighter Pilot, Carbonite Block, Princess Leah, etc. figure.

Here are some of the samples.

My mom wanted to see what it was all about, but didn't want to do it herself, so she offered to treat me to the experience. Sounds fun to me!

We didn't get any photos of the experience, but it was cool. We decided to go with the X-Wing Fighter costume. And then had to decide if I wanted hair or not. I'm fairly bald and had shaved my head before the trip, so I thought the bald version would be OK. Also, they had me remove my glasses. So we verified our shipping information and payed. They would make the figure off site and mail it to you in a couple weeks.

And.... drum roll.... the figure arrived this past weekend.

Impressive box and packaging!

I'm not so sure how much it really looks like me, especially without glasses. But there is indeed a resemblance. Pretty cool! And thanks again mom!

So after we paid for the custom figure, we spent a good while browsing around the mall. After about 15 minutes, my dad had enough and decided to go wait outside. We eyeballed a lot, but ultimately only purchased some trading pins. After checking out, my mom decided that she wanted to look at a couple other items. My wrist was throbbing, so I decided to go find a seat outside with my dad.

We were just sitting there waiting for my mom when a FastPass photographer walked up to take our picture.

We didn't notice Zam Wesell sneak up on us. LOL.

After that, it was about time to get in the FP+ line for the "Conversation with Mark Hamill". We decided to get in line a little early to ensure good seats. At that point, my wrist was REALLY throbbing and I was pretty tired. My mom let me sit in her wheel chair while we waited, and my dad got us a frozen lemonade to share. Nice!

Eventually, we made our way inside the theater and were able to get fairly decent seats on the right hand side of the auditorium.

Dude... this is so cool! Mark Hamill was awesome. Really down to earth, animated, and jovial. The talk was about 45 minutes, and he shared a lot about his experiences acting in Star Wars, his interests as a kid, shared a lot of stories about most of the major actors in the movies, etc. He couldn't say anything about the upcoming movie, but he did say that he normally shaves, but needed to start growing a beard for his upcoming filming. So at least we know that he'll have a beard in the new movie.

They had big screens off to the left and right of the stage. They were also simulcasting the event in other areas of the park, like the American Idol Experience theatre.

The 45 minutes flew by and it was time to say good bye.

Truly a highlight of the trip!

At that point, we were all hot and tired, and it was about 4pm, so we decided to head back to the resort to regroup with the rest of the family and get ready for our dinner plans.

Stay tuned as Stephanie will be writing a couple guest posts about their day at Animal Kingdom :thumbsup2

Oooh yay D-Tech me! I think the side profile looks more like you then straight on but I can see it! I wonder what they do for guys with beards. Very cool experience! I would love to be a Stormtrooper!

Boo to a throbbing wrist! Hopefully it got better. And grats on getting the cast off now as well! Was it gross and smelly when they took it off?! lol, sorry I have no idea but this is the impression I have of casts now for some reason. :rotfl:

lol, looks like Zam is about to mug you!

Awesome!
I have never heard of d-tech me. Is that always there or only during Star Wars weekend? And if you don't mind me asking, how much was it?

Oh wow, that Mark Hamill talk must have been amazing!

I would have gone with the carbonite myself. :)

I don't know if they do it with beards. When we made the advanced reservation, they said to come clean shaved....

Yeah the cast was pretty gross from all the sweating and time that I spent catching up on weeds in the garden last weekend. I was unbelievably happy to just wash my hands normally. The little things in life we take for granted. LOL.

Awesome!

It's only during Star Wars weekends as far as I'm aware. It was like $99 for a 7" figure. Sort of expensive, but considering they are custom made and shipping is included, I guess it's not ridiculous considering the price of typical Disney souvenirs :rotfl2:

If I ever have the chance to do it again, I'll go with carbonite too. I think it would work better with my bald head. ;)

Sounds like a really fun day, except for your wrist hurting. :( The D-Tech Me is really cool! And you had great seats for the Mark Hamill talk!

The D-Tech figure is really cool! What a great thing to offer - I mean, for a price of course. It definitely looks like you but I do think it needs the glasses.

I think if I ever did that I would tempted to do the frozen in carbonite one

Very cool that you got to see the Mark Hamill talk - definitely a unique experience.

Interesting the fact you mentioned in your last response, that he is the same age Alec Guinness was for Episode IV

Just found your trip report. Your children are just beautiful! Ugh the broken wrist. When we went 2 years ago my DH broke his elbow and was in a bright green cast all the way up his arm for our trip. It was awful!! The Grand Floridean is just beautiful..can't wait to read more!

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 4 - Expedition Never Rest

Hi everyone! I'm Matt's wife, Stephanie, and here's a few guest posts about my day with the kids in Animal Kingdom. I'm a bit shy about posting on the disboards, but Matt's done such a great job on the past few trip reports that I'm hoping it won't be too hard to do a few updates, too. :flower3:

We decided to go to AK. With the crowds at DHS (Star Wars) and MK (Gay Days) and because AK is Matt's least favorite park, it made sense to go to AK without him. Buddy loves this park because Expedition Everest is his favorite ride at WDW. Princess used to be rather timid about roller coasters, but now at 14, is completely over all of that. She was really looking forward to trying Expedition Everest and Dinosaur for the first time. Matt's sister and her family, his cousin and her family, and his aunt and uncle were all heading to AK, too.

I'm usually a firm believer of getting to the gates before the park opens. However, I made a mistake on this day. I thought it was early entry to AK, but I had Matt double-check the night before and whatever website he checked didn't show it. I should've gone down to the check-in desk to get the times guide that showed the park hours for all of the parks. (Somehow during the check-in process I never got this information.) So, I got the kids up and off to Animal Kingdom early, but not quite as early as I would've liked. We missed about a half hour of the early entry period. Lots of people were arriving, but it wasn't too crowded yet!

Buddy and Princess made it absolutely clear what the first ride of the day was going to be--Expedition Everest.

Pickle has met the yeti of the Matterhorn at Disneyland, but I didn't think she was ready to meet the guardian of this mountain, quite yet. So, while Princess and Buddy traveled by tea train to the roof of the world, Pickle and I got the lay of the land.

We had fun exploring the area near the exit of the ride. There were lots of interesting things to see and touch.

What could have made such large handprints on the wall?

Of course, we weren't locals and didn't realize that an offering might be appropriate. We were just tourists wondering at the sights. (Our mistake! The guardian of this mountain notices everything.)

Princess and Buddy had fun on their expedition. But see that pink magic band on Princess's wrist...?

Well...I told you the yeti noticed the lack of offering from Pickle and me. He exacted his price from Princess, and bye-bye magic band!

This was quite a memorable first ride for Princess. She didn't freak out, but she was pretty shaken up. Alright, this is Disney. I'm sure she isn't the first person to lose a magic band on a ride. Let's find out what we should do next. It's off to guest relations we go, which, unfortunately, is all the way back at the entrance to the park. (I didn't call it Expedition Never Rest for nothing!)

At this point the park had opened to everyone, and we fought our way through the oncoming throng. It really felt touch and go for a while, like salmon pushing up against the stream. Once we got to the Oasis and started heading down hill, we noticed a cast member holding an anteater skull. (Well, it was actually a replica of an anteater skull, but still cool!)

Being a typical mom, I thought it was a great idea to stop and do something educational. Being a typical teenager, Princess was like, really? You're going to stop now? I just lost my magic band, mom!!!!:scared1: Well, a minute to see a real-life anteater never hurt anyone, right?

The cast member at guest relations was very helpful. He got Princess taken care of very quickly. DisneMimi had suggested that I take everyone's tickets with me and keep them in my bag in case we had any trouble with magic bands, and fortunately I had listened to her very wise advice. The cast member dis-enabled her pink magic band and transferred all of her FP+ information to her admission ticket. We were going to have to stop by the front desk at the Grand Floridian to get a new (gray) magic band, because they didn't have those at the park. He also handed me a card with information about the theme park lost and found, located at the TTC. He told us that rides like Expedition Everest are looked over at the end of the day and all lost items that are found are then sent over there. We would have to wait to check until the next day, but there was a chance that we could get her pink magic band back.

My crew was a little tired from our adventure this morning. They decided they wanted nothing more than to wait for their cousins to show up to ride Kilimanjaro Safaris together using FP+. We found out Huey, Dewey, and Louie were on the bus and getting close to AK, so we decided to take a break in Harambe Village. Let's put our wait to good use! Nothing wrong with eating snacks at 9:30 in the morning, right?

BTW, this was our first trip to WDW using Hydroflasks. We found out about these awesome water bottles thanks to the DisUnplugged podcast team. Our water bottles and drink mix packages helped beat the heat, which was starting to get very noticeable.

Everyone was feeling happy again. A Mickey pretzel and some Sour Patch Kids can work wonders. Even for Duffy.
