Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

Great day with your parents at DHS and the Star Wars events : ) you really had a great spot for the parade and nice character meets. Love your Mom's popcorn bucket .... Fun day!!!

Fun day indeed. I loved the popcorn bucket, but we decided to give it to a special needs friend back home who really loves Star Wars. If I ever go back, I just might have to get one for myself!

Sounds like a really fun day, except for your wrist hurting. :( The D-Tech Me is really cool! And you had great seats for the Mark Hamill talk!

Yeah, I was really happy about the Mark Hamill seats. They were totally worth the throbbing wrist!

That figurine looks just like you, all it needs is glasses !

Yeah, glasses would have been nice :cool1:

The D-Tech figure is really cool! What a great thing to offer - I mean, for a price of course. It definitely looks like you but I do think it needs the glasses.

I think if I ever did that I would tempted to do the frozen in carbonite one

Very cool that you got to see the Mark Hamill talk - definitely a unique experience.

Interesting the fact you mentioned in your last response, that he is the same age Alec Guinness was for Episode IV

Yes, the Mark Hamill talk was a highlight of the trip. Feel lucky that we got to see him.

Just found your trip report. Your children are just beautiful! Ugh the broken wrist. When we went 2 years ago my DH broke his elbow and was in a bright green cast all the way up his arm for our trip. It was awful!! The Grand Floridean is just beautiful..can't wait to read more!

Thanks! And welcome!!! I'm sure a broken elbow was worse... at least my cast only went half way up the arm. :hippie:

Hi everyone! I'm Matt's wife, Stephanie, and here's a few guest posts about my day with the kids in Animal Kingdom. I'm a bit shy about posting on the disboards, but Matt's done such a great job on the past few trip reports that I'm hoping it won't be too hard to do a few updates, too. :flower3:

Wow Stephanie! You did an amazing job. I feel like I just found someone else's cool trip report, and wanting to say, "I'm joining in" and then throw in the popcorn smilie for good measure popcorn::

Keep up the good work!!! :thumbsup2

How fun for both of you to be involved in the trip reporting!

So sad that she lost her magic band. Thanks to your info I will be bringing along all our information as well in case that happens. I hope it all works out for her to get the pink one back....

Well, a minute to see a real-life anteater never hurt anyone, right?

I think David Letterman would beg to differ. Hahahahahaha :lmao:

Just wanted to join in! I enjoyed your trip down to Florida at the beginning of the report; I'm originally from STL myself so it was nice to get a touch of home in there! We always ate Chic-fil-a in FL and on the drive as well; now that I have one about a mile away, it's no longer for trips only. I know STL is getting a few of them as well. Love Chic-fil-a!

Your family looks like a lot of fun; they must ALL keep you on your toes. The surfboard lessons look very cool; I didn't even know there were really waves you could ride on the Gulf Coast, but it looks like I was wrong!

I've never stayed at the GF; I actually didn't know there was also a boat that went to MK. I thought it was monorail only. I have always thought that I didn't care to ever stay there (I'm a CR fan instead), but seeing your pictures kind of makes me want to.

Anyway, I'm in! I will probably do a fair amount of lurking, but I will be reading for sure.

oh gosh - I would have been all sorts of out of it if anyone in my group lost a magic band (just knocked on wood). Good thing they were able to help you out though ... that can't be the first time that has happened and you would think they would have the gray bands at the park and just take care of it there.

Oh well.

Did the hydro flasks work well? we usually bring some time of water bottle to the park so always on the look out for the best kind

Wow! Super cool on your SWW experience. We purposly stayed away from DHS on the 7th because we knew it would be CRAZY, but it would have been cool to experience!

I love the D-Tech action figure. I had ask my husband if he was interested and he looked at me like I was nuts. I thought it was cool!

Hope your wrist starts feeling better during the trip, what a bummer!

Love your AK start, the ride photo is great! It was so hot that day, we were at Epcot and we were MELTING in the WS. I hope it wasn't too hard to get a new MB for Princess!

I can relate to the fair amount of lurking. :) Glad to have you along!

The hydro flasks were great. We have a variety of sizes for our family, and that works out really well. We use them a lot at home, but we had never before put them to the test that they got on this trip. I would fill them up with ice and water in the morning, and they stayed cold and icy all day. It was really easy to re-fill them with either free cups of ice water at a restaurant or at a drinking fountain. They're a bit heavy, but that wasn't a problem with a stroller.

Thanks! We were starting to melt by about 9:30 that morning, too. Summer in Orlando is no joke!

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 5 - It's a Safari Party

While we were having a snack, Cassie, Randy, Huey, Dewey, and Louie were making their way into AK. My kids were playing "Where's Waldo?" through the crowd of people making their way towards Kilimanjaro Safaris. Every now and then they thought they spotted Uncle Randy, and it wasn't him. :( But, of course, eventually it was.

Since the gang was all here, we were ready to hop into the FP+ line. Wait a minute, those people look kind of familiar!

We couldn't have planned it if we tried. Steve, Denise, Beth, Beth's Steve, Chip, Dale, and Baby were approaching the entrance, too. When the cast member asked how many was in our party, I don't think I've ever said anywhere near "sixteen" before! We took up the last three (maybe four?) benches of the KS ride vehicle. This is going to be a fun ride!

This whole trip was a lot of fun to see through Pickle's eyes. She has been to WDW quite a bit, but she was little the last time we did a true, week-long DW trip. Her last time in AK was Nov. 2010, when she was three. She didn't remember much. She loves animals, and babies, and cousins, so KS was a blast.

We were off on our safari!

This was my first time riding since the whole "Simba One"/elephant poaching storyline was removed. It's funny because usually when imagineering gives a backstory to a ride or restaurant it adds a ton of depth and detail. Removing this storyline, however, really improved Kilimanjaro Safaris imo. This felt like a real safari. I got quite a few animal and people pics, but my camera's not anywhere as good as Matt's. Here's a few, but nothing spectacular.

Gotta love the rhinos!

Aunt Denise and Uncle Steve! :cool1:

Cassie and Huey.

Dewey and Buddy (yeah, cousins!)

Louie and Princess, cousins and BFF's.

Beth and Chip.

Dale and Beth's Steve.

Good-bye, Kilimanjaro Safaris! And good-bye to the rest of the family until later.

that sounds so fun to just meet up and hop on a safari and catch up while watching animals, etc. ... and you know it is a big group when you need to specify which Steve you are referring to in each picture :rotfl:

Great AK post! That stinks she lost the pink magic band. I hope you find it later at lost and found. Mickey pretzels are definitely a good way to past the time. :)

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 6 - Ducks!

While riding Kilimanjaro Safaris, I heard Cassie talking about their FP+'s for Festival of the Lion King. We still had FP+'s for Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest, so I wasn't about to change those! But FoTLK got me thinking. It had been years (YEARS!) since we had done this show. Pickle and Buddy didn't remember doing this at all, and Princess's memories were kind of fuzzy. Since Matt doesn't usually care much for shows and parades, now was my chance. We could fit it in, grab lunch and make it to KRR during our noon to one window. Buddy takes after his dad (and his grandpas) and was not looking forward to this. Unfortunately for him, he was outnumbered. :rolleyes1

We made our way over to the new section of Harambe Village.

It's always fun to check out a new area of the parks. Imagineers have done a nice job with this area. It retains the Harambe Village vibe, but is a little more peaceful. Here's what the bathroom building looks like.

Duffy's diggin' the new area, too.

I'll spare you my bad photos of FoTLK. It was too dark inside for my camera to get a good shot, and the dancers and acrobats came out blurry, too. I did manage one decent shot of the elephant, because we were in his section after all.

I knew that this show had been down for a long time and that this was a new theater, but I didn't realize how new it was! I believe it opened five days before we were there. I think we were pretty lucky. It had been such a long time since I had seen the show, that I can't really compare. It seemed very similar to what I remembered. The singers, dancers, and acrobats were amazing. Princess and Pickle loved it, and Buddy was a good sport. I told him at least he was inside in air-conditioning; and seriously, I think he would've done it again just for that.

There was no question of where I was going to take the kids to eat today. It needed to be counter service, and it had to be inside. It wasn't quite noon, but it was already scorching. So, we were off for our second safari of the day--the pizza kind. We've been to Pizzafari several times before, but we had always eaten in one of the first couple of rooms you come to. I was ready to get a break from the crowds so I led us to the very last room of the restaurant. Excellent decision.

I left Pickle with Princess and Buddy and I went to order our food. When we got back to the girls, I found that Pickle had been given a cupcake! Apparently Pickle was rather grumpy about being left behind while Buddy and I went to get our food. The awesome, sweetheart cast members noticed this right away, and weren't going to stand for grumpiness. They decided to go talk to the boss, and Mickey sent out a "just because" cupcake to Pickle. Disney magic is the best.

The kids enjoyed their pizzas, and I ate the salads.

This is the best I could do of the cupcake.

I love how there is always something new to discover on every trip. Today I found yet another cool section of Pizzafari. There was a door to the outside from the last dining room in the restaurant, and we left through it. I wanted to stop and do the whole mom-putting-on-the-sunscreen thing with the kids, and right outside the door was a covered patio seating area. Now, what was really cool, was this patio surrounded a large, screened-in-porch seating area full of tables. This part of Pizzafari was completely empty. Now it was much too hot today to sit there, but what a lovely, isolated spot to enjoy when it's a bit cooler. I will definitely be back to check it out on another trip.

The patio surrounding the screened-in porch.

The best part of this newly discovered (to us) area?

Ducks!

It was definitely a lot of fun! The kids love Disney as it is, but Disney with cousins is even better.

Great AK post! That stinks she lost the pink magic band. I hope you find it later at lost and found. Mickey pretzels are definitely a good way to past the time. :)

Thanks! Mickey pretzels are always good, and **SPOILERS** we never did find the pink magic band. We checked with lost and found the next day, and they didn't have it.

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 7 - Duffy Searches for Tigers and Eats Gummy Bears

Our FP+ for Kali River Rapids was ready, and Princess and Buddy were hoping to get a little wet. Pickle didn't want to ride, so she and I headed to the Kingdom of Anandapur, along with Duffy. We were going on the Maharaja Jungle Trek, and we were searching for tigers.

Pickle and Duffy didn't hesitate to explore.

Oh, good job! Their hard work paid off, and we got our first glimpse.

Where to next? Perhaps we should go the same direction as this guy.

Duffy was getting a little tired being out in the hot sun. Lucky for him, Pickle was there to take good care of him.

Duffy really wanted to see what was inside, but he was too little to see without some help.

And what did he see? A tiger! But it was only a picture.

We stopped here for a little refreshment, before resuming our journey.

Surely we were getting close now.

At last! Duffy and Pickle found the tigers. One was pacing around in the shade.

And the other was cooling off in the pool. That was starting to sound like a good idea to us, too.

Such a beautiful area of the park! It's places like this that make me think I should really learn more about photography and learn how to use Matt's camera.

Well, our jungle trek came to an end. Princess and Buddy caught up to us and were mostly dry. They had fun on Kali, but were ready to face that mischievous yeti again. Our FP+ for Expedition Everest was only about ten minutes away, so it was time to get going.

Okay, Disney geek warning! Don't you just love the imagineers! I had to get a picture of one of the cool designs that were included when Expedition Everest was built. Here's a shot of the mysterious mountain and a lovely shrine, located along the path from Asia towards EE.

Now you probably already knew this, but in case you didn't, the shrine was built with the same profile as the attraction. So, if you stand in the right spot...

they line up exactly. Yep. I think that's selfie worthy.

I think magic bands must be a pretty big offering, because we had no more problems with the yeti, thank goodness. Princess and Buddy rode twice; once with their own magic band/admission ticket, and once again with mine and Pickle's. Buddy had to make do with "only" three rides on EE this trip. I'm sure once he's old enough to venture off on his own, he'll spend a whole day at AK just riding this ride. :cool1:

Our initial game plan was to head over to Dinosaur. Princess had really wanted to ride this and EE for the first time today. However, it was really hot and crowded. I was game to keep going, but the young'n's had visions of the Grand Floridian pools dancing in their heads. We had walked towards Dinoland when this decision was made, so instead of entering, we headed over to Discovery Island. We weren't too far along when even venturing back to the hotel seemed like too much. So we stopped for some cold refreshments before heading back to the buses.

Buddy went the icy route and got a frozen lemonade! I like that these come with lids. He was able to eat this in two rounds: half before the bus ride and half after.

Princess got a frozen banana. Very SoCal of her. (I guess that's to be expected after surfing lessons.)

Pickle went with the classic:

Duffy didn't want to be left out of the fun. He wasn't as hot as the others since he had been strolled around for awhile earlier, so instead of something icy cold, he opted for gummy bears.

We enjoyed our break immensely. There was a band playing right by us, which added to the ambiance. They were playing all sorts of new-fangled music that I didn't know. Princess recognized most of the songs, and while I didn't know most of what she was saying, at least I had heard of Bruno Mars because of the Super Bowl. Some people got up to dance. Not us, though, it was too darn hot!!!

We headed back to the buses, when all of a sudden we had a deja vu all over again from our ride on KS in the morning. Guess who was already in line? Cassie, Randy, Huey, Dewey, and Louie were already waiting. No more than five minutes later and Steve, Denise, Beth, Beth's Steve, Chip, Dale, and Baby showed up, too! Everybody had decided to get out of Dodge and head to the pool.

Once we got to the Grand Floridian, Princess and I checked in with the front desk and got her new gray magic band situated. When you lose a magic band at WDW, the replacement that you get only comes in gray. She was disappointed that her pink one was lost, but we still held out hope that it might turn up. We wouldn't know until tomorrow.

We lost no time in getting to the one place that it made sense to be on a hot day like this:

Unfortunately, this would be our only time at AK this trip. There's a lot that we missed, but that's why it's great to go to WDW a lot. If we didn't get to it today, there's always next time. :cool2:

Wow! I just read through your posts, and you REALLY did an amazing job!!! Thanks again for filling in the gap :thumbsup2 I know we chatted briefly about how your day went later that afternoon, but it was fun getting a play by play in the trip report. Funny, I didn't even know about the shape of the shrine echoing the mountain! :cool1:

OK, so I'll pick up where Stephanie left off soon. This was the only day that we spent apart, but we did split up a couple other times in the week...so stay tuned for a few more posts from Stephanie later in the week :hippie:

.

I had no idea that the shrine was the same silhouette as the mountain! Very cool. I love all of the little details.
It looks so hot... no wonder everyone wanted to get in the pool!
