Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

Day 4 - Friday the 6th - Part 4 - Magic Kingdom!

We walked straight to the turnstiles. Or, um, Fast Pass+ thingies? This was our first time using the magic bands. I didn't grab any photos, but it was really nice. In the past, Stephanie was the keeper of the park tickets. She'd hand them out to everyone before we passed through the gate and then we'd hand them back to her afterwards (for safe keeping and collecting old school fast pass tickets.) It was nice that everyone could just wave their band and walk through. We didn't have any issues with getting in the parks all week. I think this was one of the better parts of the magic bands.

.

This is exactly what we did. I was the park ticket keeper and official FP holder. Technology has replaced us and we lost our jobs!:lmao: Actually, I'm sort of looking forward to this aspect of MBs.

We haven't been to WDW since new Fantasyland opened so we are really looking forward to it. Must try the Brew!

Was your wrist hurting? I noticed you had a sling.

Really enjoying your report!

Joining in! Loving your TR so far! I have always wanted to stay at the GF, it looks so amazing! What a great view ya'll had too :goodvibes

Can't wait to read more! :thumbsup2

Yes!:rotfl: Eating some ice cream and drinking raspberry cordial. She would fit right in.

I love the pictures of new Fantasyland! I am SO excited to see it for the first time!

You are going to love it! Even with high expectations, it was even cooler than I thought it would be :cool1:

glad you enjoyed the Mine Train - and enjoyed bypassing that line!

They did do a great job with the themeing of that area. Also, not sure if you got to see it but Dumbo looks great at night with all the lights shining on the water

We didn't ever go back to Dumbo at night. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind for our next trip :thumbsup2

Great evening at the park ... I'm excited to ride the mine train and taste the the brew! I can't wait to read more of your first evening at GF and MK

The brew was very yummy! Better than I expected.

What a fun evening so far! I'm glad you enjoyed Mine Train. I can't wait to try it out. The brew looks great, too!

Thanks!

Yeah, the MBs are a mixed blessing. It's nice that you don't have to collect paper passes, but also a bummer that you loose a lot of flexibility since you make your choices so much in advance.

Yeah, my wrist was hurting, but not too bad. That was the last day that I really wore the sling, it was just too hot and humid for it later in the trip.

Thanks for joining in. Nice to have you along.

I'm loving your family's trip report! :goodvibes

Thanks! Nice to have you along too.

Loving this! Your pictures of GF are amazing! Looking forward to more :thumbsup2

Thanks. Stay tuned, I have a bunch more to share :cool1:

We are going in September. I love all of the pictures :-) can't wait for the rest!

Awesome! We've been in September a few times, and I'm sure the weather and crowds will be much better for you than they were for us.

Wow at the pictures!!! Your family is lovely!

Thanks and welcome!

Day 4 - Friday the 6th - Part 6 - And Even More Magic Kingdom!!

Well, we left off with riding "It's a Small World" around 8:15pm. Our next FP+ was for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We had some time to spare, so we decided to stop for a bathroom break, and then take a look around the newer Rapunzel area. It was just starting to get dark, so the tea lights (or whatever they are called) were starting to look really pretty.

All, right, let's start making our way over to Frontierland. Just as we were passing the Columbia Harbor House, we stumbled into my sister and her family. Cool! Randy made it safe and sound! Since our reservations were all linked together, we all shared the same PhotoPass account. Here's a shot of them from just a few minutes earlier.

I can't remember where they were headed next, I think Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Regardless, Princess and Louie wanted to hang out, so Louie came with us. Except for he was still reluctant to ride any sort of roller coaster, so he sat out while we road Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. (More on that later because it was a different story for Louie by the end of the trip.) No big deal, we had FP+ so it would only be for a few minutes.

We only had to wait a couple minutes and we were ready to ride!

And here comes our train!

All aboard!

This is a classic for us and we always love it. Not much to say, other than it's a bit bumpier than the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. I had to pay a little more attention to keeping my wrist stable because at that point even a slight jar was very painful. That being said, it didn't keep me from having a blast!

OK, what next!?!? How about Pirates of the Caribbean? Louie texted his group and it turns out that they were headed that way too. "We'll meet you there!" So we all made our way to Pirates and were able to ride on the same boat. Cool! After we exited, Huey and Randy couldn't resist a classic sword fight. Swashbucklers!

After that, we had used up our FP+'s for the night. Some of the group wanted to ride Space Mountain next, so we headed over to Tomorrowland. I think the line was about 30 or 40 minutes. Not too bad, so Randy, Huey, Dewey, Buddy, and Princess all headed that way. And then Stephanie, Cassie, Pickle, Louie, and I all decided to go ride Buzz Light Year.

We passed the Incredibles dance party on the way... You can barely make out the People Mover (TTA) in the background. One of the biggest disappointments of the trip was that it was closed. I love the people mover!!

To infinity and...

Watch out for Zurg!

These are sort of funny ride photos. Sort of expressionless on our part. Well, the ride isn't as exciting as it seemed to be 10 years ago.

I didn't check the scores but I think Cassie and Louie both hit that special spot on Zurg that helps you max out your score.

As we stepped outside, what's that noise? Oh yeah, the fireworks. Forgot about that.

So we found a spot to rest and watched Wishes from the back corner of Tomorrowland. That was fun! Next we headed back to regroup with the others at Space Mtn. And then some of us were hungry. We decided to head over to Casey's for corn dogs, or fries, or whatever. It was pretty crowded when we got there, even at around 10:30pm. We decided to just skip it and maybe grab a snack back at the hotel. Cassie's clan decided to stay at MK a little longer, so we parted ways.

We took the boat back to the Grand Floridian and were happy to see the Water Pageant going as we approached.

The boat ride back was pleasant and relaxing. Walking back to our room we stopped at Gasparilla Grill (quick service) and grabbed a couple cup cakes to share. We made it back to our room and were all in bed and ready to go to sleep by 11:15pm or so.

Wow!!! What a great first day at Disney! The crowds were remarkably low that night and the weather was awesome. Too bad both of those aspects didn't stay like that for the entire trip!

Next up, we'll have a split day. My parents and I did Star Wars Weekends and everyone else in the group went to Animal Kingdom. Stephanie agreed to write up her experiences at AK, so stay tuned for a guest post from my lovely wife.

Cheers!

.

ah love Big Thunder Mountain - especially at night!

Your faces on Buzz are pretty funny ... even Pickle looks as excited as one is waiting on line at the DMV or something

Glad you go so much done but bummer to hear the crowds didn't stay low

Great report!

We did the same monster family trip last August to WDW. I think there were 13 of us total (three boys under 18 months old!).

Taking my boys back there in November, and we can't wait!

Hahahaha! That's great :rotfl2:

Cool! I bet you are excited, I know that I would be :cool1:

Great update ! Isn't the new Fantasyland so nice ? It is always nice to have something new at Disney.

The lanterns are so beautiful in Fantasyland and wow you really took incredible pictures of your family and well everything! The crowd level looked low and great to do so much your first evening and really you did so much the entire first day ... I bet you all fell right to sleep. Love the water pageant it's so magical to watch from MK or the Floridian. Back about 15 or 17 rs ago on our first stay at the Floridian we arrived late in the evening to our hotel room since we flew from California. All of a sudden we heard music outside our balcony and we were in total awe to see disney did a water, light and music show on the lake ... Very magical first night memory : )

Quick question ... Did fast pass+ work well for you? This is our first time using it online for our upcoming trip in November. Did you find the rides you wanted right away? Or did you have to tweak your FP around to get them right?

I hear you. Very nice indeed!

Being surprised by the water pageant on your first Grand Floridian stay sounds very magical indeed. How cool!

FP+ worked well enough for us. We were able to get everything that we wanted pretty much when we wanted. Including the harder ones like Anna & Elsa, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Mark Hamill show. That being said, I followed the tips on DISboards to lock those in as soon as they became available.

Due to transportation issues with the monorail, we arrived about 20 minutes late for Soarin' at EPCOT and the attendant didn't give us any trouble. Only once during the entire week, was a FP+ ride down for us (Splash Mountain.) They sent an email later offering us the option to grab a FP+ for any ride at any time that day.

We made most of the FP+ arrangements online weeks in advance. I only had to change a couple while we were there during the week, and it wasn't too difficult to do on my phone. I'd say if there were any issues, it was that we had such a big group and it was hard to be spontaneous. If Princess (14) wanted to spend the rest of the day with her cousins and they had different FP+ selections, it wasn't always easy for her to tag along.

We were concerned about losing spontaneity, but our prior experiences were in the off season, and we had never seen WDW this crowded before. Since the parks were so crowded and the lines were so long, having to schedule our day in advance was a blessing in disguise.

What a great first afternoon/evening in Magic Kingdom! Love the pictures in line at SDMT of the fam (full of that omg we are at Disney! excitement!) !

Can't wait for more! popcorn::

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Star Wars Weekends

This was the fourth weekend for Star Wars Weekends. I had never been before, but I always thought it would be fun. Same with my parents. Everyone else was fairly indifferent, and they decided that they would rather avoid the crowds and just hit Hollywood Studios later in the week. So we decided to split up for the day. Stephanie and the kids tagged along with the others and I got up early and headed to Hollywood Studios with my parents. We’ll start with my day, and then Stephanie will write about their day at Animal Kingdom.

We arrived at the bag check area at about 7:30am and got through without too much of a hassle. I was really surprised to see that the lines weren’t that long at all yet. They hadn't passed the ticket windows yet. Cool!

There were a lot of Star Wars banners and props all over the place!

The park opened at 8:00, but they let us inside about 20-25 minutes early for the rope drop. As mentioned before, my mom has a bad knee. Some days it’s worse than others and she opts to rent a wheel chair, and other times she doesn’t. This was going to be a wheel chair day, so we stopped there first.

Once Disnemimi obtained her wheel chair, we were ready to assimilate into the crowd amassing behind the rope on Hollywood Boulevard.

A couple of storm troopers were stationed on watch towers about half way down the street. The rope was basically between them. They goofed off and told a lot of silly Star Wars related jokes until it was time for them to let everyone in. Some of the gags were actually quite funny :rotfl:

Once the ropes dropped, they stayed on their pedestals for a while and let people take pictures of them. And of course they teased/harassed people from time to time.

So where do we start? We had our fast passes, an appointment for D-Tech Me, wanted to see the parade, etc. Anything beyond that was gravy. Our first FP+ wasn’t until after the parade, so we decided to start heading towards the Star Tours area and see what we would find. In hindsight, we should have done our research to find out where the various character meet and greets were happening. We stumbled upon Princess Leah, but it turns out that Chewbacca was at the speeder bike location across from Star Tours. I would have loved to meet him, but the line was quite long by the time we noticed him. No biggie. We’re easy going!

She liked my Han Solo shirt :-)

After we met Princess Leah, we saw Chip and Dale dressed up as Ewoks. Cool!

After that, we decided to head back towards Hollywood Boulevard and think about reserving a space for the parade. Not too many people had started staking their claims yet, so my mom went in the shops to look for a new watch (hers had recently broke.) And then my dad and I headed over to ride the Great Movie Ride. (My dad loves this ride, but personally, I think of it as the “not so great movie ride.”)

Yawn. It was a nice break though.

After that, we met Disnemimi and grabbed a spot to watch the parade in the shade. It was still about two and a half hours before the parade started. I’ve never waited that long for a parade or fireworks spot at the parks before, but we felt like it was worth it since this is a rare parade and even more rare to have Mark Hamill in it.

I didn’t get a picture or her name, but there was an outstanding cast member working the area. She was super friendly and pointed us to a good spot in the shade, and then checked in on us every 20 or 30 minutes. She gave us some tips and was just fun to be around. I love interacting with cast members who obviously love there job!

A little while later, we wanted a snack so my mom headed over to the popcorn stand and came back with this…

Fresh popcorn. Oh yeah!!!

A PhotoPass photographer passed by, so we hopped up to get a couple photos. My dad stayed back at the curb to protect our space from rebel spies. :-)

He said to give him a thumbs up

The time went surprisingly fast and before we knew it, the parade started.

Hello Jedi Mickey!!!

After Mickey and friends passed through, the kids from the day’s Jedi Training Academy passed by.

After that, members of the 501st Legion (Star Wars cosplay fan club) passed by. There were tons of them. I took a lot of photos, but I’ll spare you most of them.

The wookies were cool!

Hey Chewie!

Day 5 - Saturday the 7th - Part 2 - More of the Star Wars Parade

Oh, it was cool to see R2-D2 cruising around.

Next up, were the Star Wars “celebrities”.

Ashley Ekstein was first. She’s the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She also has an amazingly cool line of “geeky” clothes for women, called “Her Universe”. http://www.heruniverse.com They had some of it on display at Darth’s Mall but they were sold out, otherwise my mom would have purchased one of the dresses for Princess.

Cool, she waived right at me!!!

Next up was Taylor Gray. To be honest, I have no idea who he is. I think he’s a voice on a new Star Wars cartoon coming out this fall.

And then we had Darth Maul himself, Ray Park. I’m not a huge fan of Episode 1, but the Darth Maul battle scenes at the end of the movie were about as cool as they come. Thumbs up!

Then we had Billy Dee Williams. Lando Calrisian. No. Way. I love Lando. This is so cool!!!!!

Next up was Mark Hamill himself. I can’t explain how cool it felt to be so close to one of my childhood heroes. I usually don’t fan out over celebrities, but this was really cool. Except for he had to waive to both sides of the street, and he was waiving at the other side when he passed, so unfortunately I didn’t get a good shot. Oh well.

And then finally, we had James Arnold Taylor. He’s the voice of Obi-wan Kenobi in the Clone Wars cartoons. He also served as MC for a lot of the shows and events.

At that point, everyone headed down towards the stage in front of the Mickey hat. The stars and characters all lined up on stage for more photo ops, and a series of announcements/advertisements for the events happening throughout the day. So cool!

They finished up with some fireworks.

I was caught off guard next because, they cleared the streets and then the motorcade cars with the celebrities headed back down Hollywood Boulevard towards the front entrance of the park. I wasn’t expecting this, so I was unable to get a good spot for more photos.

Wow, that parade was really cool! Was it worth a 2.5 hour wait in the heat? You know what, I would have to say yes indeed.

I was having such a great time with my parents. My sister went off to college and we moved several states away from her when I was in the 7th grade. So I was practically an only child during my teenage years. It was fun being alone with them again and felt like old times. (I'm one of the lucky few who actually got along well with their parents during the teenage and college years.)

So, our FP+ for Star Tours was coming up, so we started heading that way next...

.

I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but glad you had a good time. Looks like you had a great spot for the parade!

I haven't been to star wars at HS but that parade looks like it would of been fun. I had a friend there that same week and he posted a picture of himself with Mark Hamill .
