Heard on the news last night that an area school district here has banned Heely's from the elementary and middle school..

The first thought that came to my mind was why would a parent send a child to school wearing these things to begin with? :confused3

because some parents are idiots.

Yes, why a parent would let them wear them to school is a great question. But still kids come to school wearing them. I personally stopped one kid skating down the hall in them today. We make them remove the wheels. They are totally unsafe, and a smart idea to ban them.

They've been banned at our school (where I work) since day one. If a child does come in with them, they have to call home and get a different pair of shoes. I can only remember this happening once.

when i read the first part of this thread, that was my thought too lol! "why would parents let them wear them to school, anyway?"

They have always been banned in our schools. No different than wearing roller blades to school.

Heely shoes have been a no-no at DD's school since last year... I can't imagine letting DD wear them... :scared:

The principal of my son's elementary school sent a letter home on Monday reminding parents that if their child came to school in Heely's, they were only allowed if the wheels had been removed. Obviously that defeats the purpose of why the kids want to wear them, but I'm sure they must have been having problems with them at the school.

I don't know why they're not banned at DD's school but their are a couple of kids with them at the bus stop every day :confused3 .

I'm pretty sure Satan invented Heely's to torment us. They bring the darkside out of most kids.

Not to mention the liability issues because you know darn well if some kid that was wearing them got hurt, it would somehow be the school's fault..

Yikes! Wheeling around at a BUS STOP ??? If that's not an accident waiting to happen, I don't know what is!

DD can't even have a rolling bookbag . So you know Heely's are no where to be found. NO wheels of anykind allowed on the hallways.

I'm a teacher....you would be surprised at what some parents send their kids to school in. :confused3

Have no clue what they are (nor do I care) except for reading something yesterday. Someone in Virginia Beach found a pair out in the woods. They were wondering where the owner was. LOL! I'm guessing they're sneakers. (???) First time I've ever heard of them. Darling son won't be owning any.

My daughter has heelys. We never got a note home from school stating they can not be worn at school but I would not let her go to school with them on anyway. They have a flight of stairs to walk up to go to library and art and no way do I want her walking up a flight of stairs with wheels in her shoes! They are allowed rolling backpacks and last year she had one of those, this year she opted for a messenger bags (reg. backpacks are so out (according to the kids at school), its either messenger bags or the bags with wheels. But next year with more books she may go back to rolling. She is only 37 pounds and since they are only suppsed to carry 15 percent of their body weight she should not be carrying over 5.5 pounds in there. I know they give them a double set for some classes to keep at home but I will be sure that hse is not carrying more than the weight she should be carrying in that thing.

They've been banned forever in my kids school (almost 2 years I think). But yes, many parents don't care or have no regard for the rules.

My daughter has told me that the principal will come and collect the wheels if you are caught!

Every now and then I see a kid with them rolling through the store where I work (large home improvement chain). I can see the enticement of our store. Long straight aisles, smooth concrete floor. If it's slow and not crowded, it's very inviting. Nothing's been said about them not being allowed in the store yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if some retailer eventually institutes a ban on them. My guess is if a large retailer does, WalMart will be the first.

Part of me thinks that if I were their age, I'd be wanting a pair of them also.* Another part of me, though, thinks that if a small piece of whatever -- sliver of wood, loose screw, tile spacer, etc -- that could be on the floor can stop the wheel of a pallet jack, it can certainly stop the wheel on a heely.

* Okay, I'll admit it, I wonder if they do come in adult sizes. :teeth: Of course, the end result would probably be :headache:

Can someone please tell me how much these stupid things cost? I can't imagine the price is worth the aggravation of having your kid be a menace to society.;)
