Heating pad?

I've been reading some conflicting information, so I'm wondering if someone can help. I'm having some serious sinus/ear problems that are only eased through the use of a heating pad at night. The list of prohibited items on the cruise line website runs through a list of electronic devices that are prohibited, but doesn't specifically list heating pads. It does seem that they would fall into the "prohibited" category. Then I discovered this:

So, doesn't anyone know for sure if I would be allowed to bring a heating pad on board?

I've a heating pad that automatically shuts off after about 15 min. I still disconnect it when not in use, but I like this safety feature.

Just because the answer comes from the Mom's Panel doesn't mean it's correct. Unfortunately, the Mom's Panel is notorious for giving out incorrect info. Even answers you get by calling DCL's call center may not be correct. Heating pads are not prohibited by name, but the wording is "Electrical appliances such as rice cookers, hot plates, coffee makers, electric irons, bottle sterilizer and bottle warmers, electric blankets, electric blenders, etc." which indicates the list is not exhaustive. I would honestly not be surprised if you were prohibited from bringing a heating pad onboard. What about using a hot water bottle? You could fill that up with hot water from the drink station on the pool deck or request a carafe of hot water from room service.

I have seen many errors made by this group so I would not go by what they say ever without getting a second opinion.
having said that, I don't think a heating pad would be an issue at all but that's just my thought and its worth about as much as the mom's panel. lol.

eta-just read Maggie'smom response, we must have been writing at the same time, and I think I change my thought to be in line with hers. it is an electrical appliance so it could very well be one of the prohibited items.

I agree. I think, since electric blankets are specified, it would also be prohibited. IMO, electric blankets and heating pads would fall in the same category.

Since your use of the heating pad is for a medical reason, I would contact Special Services and explain the situation. They may be able to provide you with a better answer or alternatives that they can offer. (I have heard of the Chief Engineer having to approve electronic devices so it may be as simple as having your heating pad looked over once you are on board to get a yes or no.)

How about using a Thermacare or chemical heat pack? We have a few Thermacare patches in our travel first aid kit.

How about filling a small plastic water bottle with hot or warm water? I use this method to keep warm at home and the heat is retained for quite a while.

I was a school nurse for many years. I used this for kids that came to the health room with ear pain. It works great. Just fill with very warm water.

FYI
When at home you can wet a few paper towels, squeeze the moisture out very well. Place in a mug and microwave until nice and warm. Check to make sure no liquid drips out, don't want any burns, and hold over the ear.
