Healthy Living around the World Showcase ~ June 2016 WISH Challenge!

Since we had so few answers on the Saturday QOTD, I am going to skip the QOTD for Sunday. But I have a

Bonus Fun QOTD for Sunday June 5:

If you could add one country to the World Showcase? Which country would that be? Tell us what you would put into that
pavilion.

(And in case anyone does not remember right now which countries there are, we currently have: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, United States of America, Japan, Marocco, France, United Kingdom, Canada),

I, too, couldn't think of an answer to the Saturday question of the day. I guess if anything, I wore a mask of neutralness. But it wasn't really a mask until the end. While I would have loved to be thinner, it wasn't until I noticed some real life problems (as I've said many times, last year on vacation, it hit me like a ton of bricks - everything seemed to small - plane seats, ride seats, etc) that I truly became unhappy. Prior to that, I was pretty neutral and content. Didn't seem to impact, work life, social life, family life, etc. Maybe I fibbed once or twice about how I would never want to do something (like ziplining) that had a weight limit. I don't really have a strong desire to zipline, but I'm not deadset against it, like I have always stated to friends and family.

QOTD today: My first throught was Egypt, but I'm thinking the food might be too similar to Morocco. But I really like the idea of Australia!

Check in for the week: 100%. I reached 140 active minutes all four days so far! This new goal is VERY INTERESTING. I've had an extended 10,000 step streak going for almost a year now, so I'm used to keeping track of my steps, but the nuance of the active minute is different than counting steps. You don't get an active minute until you've been consistently active for 10 minutes, so it gets me out of the chair and keeps me out of it for a substantial period of time.

And here's my random poll of the day (like my swimshorts question - I ended up just getting a skirted suit because I felt I needed another inch or two of coverage, but maybe next year . . . )

Does anyone own and wear prescription sunglasses? If so, do you feel the price tag was worth it? I've recently (in the past 12 months) pretty much given up on my contacts. Something in my eyes changed and they are uncomfortable after about 5 hours. I'm now in glasses 24/7 and with summer coming, I thought - no problem, I'll get prescription sunglasses. Holy Cow - $200 - $300 for a pair??!!! I just don't know about that. But, yet I can't imagine going all summer without sunglasses. I figure you just hang on to them, even if your prescription changes a bit, right? Just not sure what to do . . .

I've never tried prescription sunglasses, so I can't comment on that.
I do have (knockoff) Transitions lenses in one pair of glasses. I really wear my contacts more than I wear my glasses, so I don't use them much, but I do sometimes wear my glasses outside, and the Transitions are great. It's so much easier to be able to wear the same glasses inside and outside, and I think they're cheaper than prescription sunglasses. The only problem I have is that sometimes it takes a while for them to adjust back to normal when I come in from outside - I sometimes have to take them off for a few minutes when I first get inside to be able to see. I think the actual name-brand Transitions don't have that problem, though. I definitely would recommend Transitions if you think that might be worth it for you.

Question oft he Day June 4th

@JacknSally inspired me to this question, so we are going to stay a little longer in Italy. One of the features of the Italian Pavillion at Epcot is a mask maker’s shop. Accordning to the Disney Parks Blog
, Giorgio Iurcotta is a true Venetian Mask artisan and has been a part of a centuries-old tradition that is as colorful and complicated as Venice itself. He relocated to Florida from Venice, Italy, in 2001 to represent the company his mother owns – Balocoloc Artisans of Venice – and can be found quietly painting beautiful and mysterious paper mache masks inside a small shop within the Italy Pavilion.

Venetian masks are a centuries-old tradition of Venice, Italy. The masks are typically worn during the Carnival, but have been used on many other occasions in the past, usually as a device for hiding the wearer's identity and social status. The mask would permit the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to interact with other members of the society outside the bounds of identity and everyday convention. It was useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters.

While most of us would not wear real masks outside of Halloween and costume parties, sometimes we do wear masks in a metaphorical sense. Do you have any weight loss “masks” – and for what purpose. Do you find them helpful or not?

Tough one because I'm not really sure I have any weight loss masks, maybe "fear" I dunno. I'll re-visit this if I think of something.

I was going to say Sweden for my late grandpa's native land(he was 100% Swedish) but is it maybe too similar to Norway. I do like the idea of Australia too.

Busy weekend. My mother-in-law is in town and I had a 5k yesterday (in the rain) along with my daughters dance recital last night. Good times, but hectic.

Deep question - probably too deep for me. I don't think I wear/wore any masks during this process or before. I just liked to eat a lot of fattening food and not exercise!

Good question - the first thing that popped in my mind was Greece, so I'll go with it. You could have the Greek gods/goddesses and the Greek food... it's a win/win.

Weekly check-in:

Started the month at 243 and the goal is to lose 14 lbs. Today I weighed in at 240 lbs - loss of 3 lbs which is 21% of my goal. So far, so good!
Hectic weeks can be conducive. I had one last week and was shocked to have lost 2.8 lbs. Sometimes the running around getting stuff done helps the metabolism. I'm envious of your 14 lbs a month losses. That is amazing.

No experience in the prescription sunglasses(I'm farsighted) but a friend gets a brand I can't recall now that run $200-300 that I believe can be fitted prescription lenses or blank. If I recall or run past the name again I'll let you know but they are really great customer service and her pair were replaced after many years with a proration amount. That's pretty cool. I have to wear them due to sensitive eyes and I keep replacing the Foster Grants. UGH They break pretty much in the same spot. The last ones in less than a month. So I might put up some dough for a good quality pair. I've probably spent what she spent over the years while her pair lasted for 7 years or something like that. No scratches until that final drop. Some things you get what you pay for and in sunglass world I'm finding it true. argh

Strangely, when I asked my optometrist, he didn't even mention Transititions lenses. I forgot all about them. His suggestions were either separate sunglasses or these magnetic clip on lenses. I figured I might lose the clip ons, so decided to go for prescription sunglasses or nothing, but I didn't even think about transitions. Those would be even better, but seeing as I just got a new pair of regular glasses, it's too late now for Transitions anyway!

I've been all over the map with sunglasses. Most recently, I've had $20 pairs from Target or wherever, but there was a time that I spent $100 on some RayBans and I did really like them and they lasted and lasted. I'm not even sure these prescription ones are that high quality. The frames are $100+ and that's what gets me. I knew the lenses would be costly - they are $90 plus either $20 for just tint or $100 for polarized tint, I just didn't expect the frames to cost so much. My daughter has an eye doctor appointment on Wednesday and while she's getting her exam, I'll look at the sunglasses frames again. Part of me thinks if I keep them for a long time, they would be worth it. But the other part of me says, I could lose them or sit on them and then that would be a big waste of money. Maybe they come with a warranty (not from being lost of course), I'll have to look into that.

I always love your answers to these questions - you are so straight forward - no excuses you just own your love of food and no exercise :D

My daughter is nearsighted and I think before we go on a trip to Florida I'll invest in some prescription sunglasses so she can see clearly while outside with sun in her eyes all day.

Hi everyone - survived the crazy race weekend and am rested up and ready to enjoy the rest of my Sunday evening. :)

Race went well -- a bit more hilly than I thought so I didn't get my desired time. However, I had my 4th best race to date and it was wonderful to run in my home state. I am now going to concentrate on working on hills versus time for awhile. That'll help for sure!

I have the kind of lenses in my glasses that darken when Exposed to sun light and really like them. My only call out is that they don't darken when driving in the car, I'm used to this as I've had this kind of lense for 6+ years, but it might be an adjustment if new.

Yes, Transitions... Couldn't remember the name till SarahDisney mentioned it!

Question of the Day for June 6:

We are moving on to Norway today! This is a pavilion the is currently under construction and it will soon re-appear in new form. However, we are visiting real countries, so I wanted to make sure that we get there before it is turned into the Arandelle pavilion. (And I have my own personal reasons, as exactly a year ago today my sister and I boarded the Disney Magic for a cruise to Norway!)

Norway+Exterior.jpg

Norway is an interesting country: far far North in Europe, it's most southern point is the most northern southern point of any of the countries around the World Showcase. Only the USA (with Alaska) and Canada have part of their territory in the area where we find Norway. However, it is far warmer than one would think thanks to the North Atlantic Current, which continues the Gulf Stream - a current that brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico up through the Atlantic. Norway was a very poor country. Summers are short, so farming is only possible a few months a year. Most of the country's area is filled with majestic mountains, waterfalls, glaciers and fjords. While pretty for the tourists, it is difficult to live from this land.

This all changed in the late 1960s when the North Sea Oil Fields were discovered. The Norwegians decided to be responsible with all the richness they suddenly had with the oil money. The oil industry is to a large part owned by the Norwegian government, so that most of the oil revenue actually goes to the state. It is used to provide some of the best schools in the world (Norway constantly ranks very high on international comparisons), hospitals, infrastructure in the very inaccessible parts of the country and such. However, the largest part of it goes into a large fund, The Government Pension Fund of Norway, also known as the Oil Fund, which was set up to provide wealth for Norway once the oil runs out. Today, Norway is one of the few countries in the world that do not have any debt, but instead has a capital reserve. It is the second richest country in the world and continuously ranks as one of the countries with the highest standard of living. If you have ever wondered why the Norwegian pavilion in its original form focussed so heavily on the oil drilling: That's why. The oil changed the country.

But why did I tell you all of this? I think there is a lesson to be learned from the Norwegians: There ability as a country to exercise moderation. Yes, some of the oil money goes to benefit the people living there. But most of it isn't. They know that spending everything would be nice now, but really bad later. How do you deal with moderation? Is this easy for you or do you struggle with it? Have you found ways to help you being better in this regard?

I'm also sitting at 17%

And I think another south american country would be a nice add in. Brasil or Argentina, or an Island nation. Europe, Africa, and Asia are already really well represented.

QOTD:

Ahhh moderation. I don't do it. In any aspect. Good things or bad things. It's all black and white no middle ground. Though the helpful part of that is if I don't buy food that is bad for me I just won't eat it or crave it. The bad side being I am an adult and can get and eat an entire package of cookies in a night. I just try not to do that allll the time. :crazy2:

Moderation.... easier with some things than with others ( hard with movie popcorn once I get started..... easier with main dishes). Some items I chose to give up entirely because I just cannot control myself (like the aforementioned popcorn....now I bring my own healthy homemade popcorn to the movies). Other items I save for the occasional splurge (homemade cookie dough), and some things I've really learned to control well (ice cream and chips at home). But it has been a learning process! I've also learned (sometimes the hard way) what things are really WORTH the indulgence (so many things are NOT) to enjoy in moderation. There was a point in time when I couldn't foresee giving up potato chips and wine..... but I cannot tell you the last time I had either (wait.... I had wine in Bermuda last October!!). But you get the point. Sometimes DS offers me ONE chip.... and I eat it and move on. I never crave real potato chips any more. I occasionally have a small bag of Baked Lay's with a sandwich (mostly from Subway) but I never buy them to have at home any more. And I stopped buying sweet potato chips because the minute the bag is open, I inhale the entire thing.... no matter what. There is no moderation to be had with those things!

Hey friends! Gotta dash.... I hope you all have a great day! I'm up for 3 planks today because I did Saturday's squats yesterday along with yesterday's squats.... but I'm two days behind on my plank/flutter kick goal! Off to a field trip today, so I will definitely get my steps in! TTYL................P

Hi Everyone! Sorry I have been MIA. I decided on a goal for a month. I am going to try for maintenance. My kids get out of school next week which will throw things off for me at first, so I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. So, as some of you suggested. I'll give myself 2 pounds of wiggle room, starting at 134, and as long as I stay under 136 I will say I am on goal. So for week one, at 135, I am on goal:)

I'll be back later to catch up, but have to get to my strength class now.

How do you deal with moderation? Is this easy for you or do you struggle with it? Have you found ways to help you being better in this regard?

o_O I struggle with this - sometimes I can do it but mostly overindulge - I don't eat a whole packet of cookies but I can polish off a whole packet of potato chips. I try to force some moderation in my chocolate by buying the snack size packets - again sometimes this works other times I'll just have 2-3 in one go. This definitely something I need to work on.

I tracked my food today for the first time in a long time - so yeah. I was honest - I was going super good but then I totally ruined our dinner (accidentally left the temperature on the turbo oven on defrost/wash when I thought the chicken had been roasting for an hour!!! ooops) kids were starving and would not have been able to wait for it to cook and it would have been too late in the evening for them - so we had emergency pizza. The good thing is that whilst I ended up in the red it wasn't by all that much as I had made good choices earlier in the day.

I've had prescription sunglasses in the past and for me the annoyance was having to carry two pairs of glasses around and switching back and forth. I gave up on doing it because it just irritated me. Usually now I just have a big pair of regular sunglasses that I double up on in front of my glasses unless I'm out in public, then I'll just fly blind.

Just stopping by for a moment. Disney has been great. Very hot and humid. My fitbit died so I haven't been able to know how many steps but I know I have a ton. Had to switch some plans. We are getting a tropical storm today. In the parks this morning then eating and staying at the resort this evening.

How do you deal with moderation? Is this easy for you or do you struggle with it? Have you found ways to help you being better in this regard?

I don't do moderation either. Losing weight/getting healthier isn't something I kind of want to do or hope to do... it's something I have to do. It's very black and white with me and I can't be somewhere in the middle. I know that it might not be for everyone, but moderation just doesn't work for me.

I've been trying to manage moderation with no success at all. As I've mentioned previously, I'm a sugar addict and have been unable to find the balance point where some is enough... Some always leads to more, and more, and more. I've slipped from having a few bad days to not even being on program, so i need to fight and claw my way back.

Moderation . . . I feel like others here. It's just plain hard! I do feel like I've made some strides, particularly last month. Previously, if I were going out to eat, that meant I would eat anything and everything I wanted, including dessert.

In May, I tried to practice moderation since I had events that involved eating out every single week. In my old lifestyle, it would have been an excuse to eat terribly. Since I started on this healthy journey a year ago, for the first 8 months or so, I would have done one of two things - I would have foregone the one meal out with my family a week that I enjoy in favor of the extra event or I would have made my excuses and not attended the extra event. I had no faith in myself to control my eating.

In May, I decided that my life included every day events and special events and that I trusted myself to be reasonable. I accepted each and every invitation and I went out to eat with my family as well. I still indulged with my family, but I really held back with the extra events, ordering what I thought would be the tastiest, healthiest option on the menu. I really enjoyed those extra meals. I didn't lose as much weight last month as I did in other months, but I felt like a success in other ways. I feel like I have overcome the idea that "restuarant = bad eating"

For the first time ever - on Saturday, I actually restrained myself on my free day. We went out to lunch as a family and while I ate without regard to calories (a yummy cheeseburger and sweet potato fries at Red Robin), we also decided to go out to dinner and I ordered a spinach salad with grilled chicken. Normally, free day is a free for all, but I just wasn't super hungry and knew the salad was a better choice than enchiladas (it was a Mexican place).

So, I feel like I'm making some headway in the area of moderation and I'm very proud of that!
