Does anyone have a link for the thread on healthy food options at Disney? If not can anyone share their experiences. Like for example if I want the mushroom filet can I get steamed veggies instead of the rice?

If you're talking about Le Cellier, you can only sub a side that is listed as an accompaniment to another entree. You can't ask to sub something from the separate sides menu, like asparagus, without being charged for it. If you find steamed veggies on the menu accompanying another entree you can get it with your filet. There was a poster awhile back who asked to sub the asparagus for the rice, and it was not permitted.

Disney Special Diets will assist you with medical conditions or "lifestyle choices" like veganism. I don't think they are meant to accommodate just a preference to eat healthier. But you can contact them and ask.

My family likes to mix and match so to speak from the menu, and as the pp said above, if it is a side item from another entree, you will have no problem requesting that instead of the one listed with yours.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have to watch what i eat due to a medical problem I have been battling, and also I try to watch what I eat.

It is really easy to eat healthy at WDW if you make it a priority. There are some restaurants that make it easier then others (The Wave, Boma, Tusker House) but any of them will help you out with healthier eating.

First, most restaurants are willing to work with you on sides. This could be substitutions (vegetable medley instead of cheesy mashed potatoes) or preparation alterations (steamed instead of sautéed in butter).

At a buffet a good rule of thumb is to use only the small salad plates instead of the larger dinner plates. You will be forced to take smaller portions. Along the same lines forcing yourself to wait 5 minutes and drink a half or full glass of water between trips may cut down on the calories. Many times thirst is mistaken as hunger and there is a delay between actually being full and your brain telling you that you are full (sometimes refereed to as satiety delay).

Going with the thirst vs. hunger thing make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day. I also try to grab fresh fruit between meals. Fruit has a lot of water and is a better choice then most of the snacks that are down there.

Also, keep in mind that you are doing a lot of walking. You burn about 100 calories per mile of walking. If you normally walk 3 miles a day at home but walk 6 miles while at WDW you can consume an additional 300 calories and maintain your normal calorie in vs. calorie out numbers. This is actual walking, not standing in line. A lot of people take a pedometer so they know how far they are walking.

Good luck. If you decide that healthy eating is a priority it is really not that hard to do if you are willing to speak up at restaurants and have the self control to stick with the decision.
