First off, let me ask this: When did they start calling emergency rooms "emergency departments"? When I was driving around yesterday trying to find a spot to park I saw a sign that said "ED only". I thought really long and hard about that because.....well.......let's not even touch that one.

I was diagnosed with something called "Pleurisy", which is an inflammation of the lining around the lungs and chest cavity. I couldn't afford the script they wrote me so I've been taking an over-the-counter version (Motrin) in slightly smaller doses. It helps with the pain quite a bit. I told the doctor I was taking Tylenol for the pain but he told me it wouldn't do much of anything because it's not an Ibuprofen based anti-inflammatory. Who knew? :confused3

Yesterday I was in so much pain. When I leaned over to reach for something I would actually wince and yelp out an expletive. Even when I drove myself to the ER...er....ED I would cringe every time I made a sharp right-hand turn. It also affects my breathing. It's not like I'm gasping for air, but whenever I inhale I've noticed I can't take in as much as I used to. The doctor said it should only last 7-10 days.....but I'm currently on either day 6 or 7, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Something that annoyed me to no end was the dismissive nature of the doctor and attending resident. I honestly don't even think they looked at the X-Rays they took, however they did manage to peek at the blood test which showed I had no blood clots. They were extremely dismissive when it came to my eye problem because they assumed it was just an infection under the eyelid. The attending said, "Just put a hot compress on it a couple times a day." And then he came back 15 minutes later and said, "Yeah.....just put a cold compress on it...." Makes you think about how competent some of these people actually are.

At least I'm not in too much pain right now. When I applied for financial assistance they didn't seem to believe me that I had no income. They're apparently going to do some research to try and find out if I'm actually as broke as I said I was.....but that could take months. And in the meantime I'm in serious debt with a medical bill. :guilty:

I have no words of advice but just want to express my sympathy and offer a  I am REALLY sorry you cannot afford the perscription they have given you. I take it you have no medical insurance (or at least nothing that covers RXs)? Oye, that must be rough.

I have not heard of "EDs" before myself. It was still an ER in New Hampshire when we left in January. I have to say medical care is one of the things the US really needs to improve on.

Oh, MM!

That sucks! I don't have anything helpful to say. Just that I'm thinking happy thoughts for you and sending as many positive vibes your way as I can. :goodvibes

I'm glad you went to the doctor, though. Yeah, the financial side of it is bad, but the potential health issues were much worse.

Take care of yourself!

Yeah....Call me "Mr. Dill" 'cause I'm in a bit of a pickle: No insurance and no income (with the exception of the occassional freelance job every once in a while that pays very little). No fun.

I'd easily put medical care issue in the top 3 things that this country needs to focus on. When I sat down to do all the paperwork, I told the woman I had no income or insurance, and she said, "Honey.....it's okay. There have been at least 20 other patients in here today so far who are in the same situation."

I'm hopped up on Motrin. LET'S DANCE!!!!!!:banana:

Jeesh!

Glad you found out what is wrong! Take care of yourself! Hope you're feeling better soon!

The medical situation is something this country needs to fix soon!

Thank you, Mike. It definitely is.

Now let's boogie before the Motrin wears off!!!:banana:

Gosh .. I hope you feel better soon.

My dad was in the Emergency Room for hours and hours a few months ago before they were able to get him a room. It just seems that the people who work there don't care.

Jeez! I hope he wasn't in too much pain. There was a woman who complained about waiting almost 3 hours, so I thought it was going to be a long wait, but it only took about 30 minutes. Must've been the desperate look I gave them. ;)

Oh ouch. I feel your pain. I've had Pleurisy a few times in my life and it's absolutely NO fun and causes a lot of pain. The medication really doesn't speed things up much, but they're right. It usually only lasts about 7 days with anti-inflammatory medication. Big hug babe.

It's horrible how some emergency staff treat their patients. I guess it can depend on the type of hospital too. I've gotten incredible treatement at some and a state funded hospital, I was herded through like cattle. Luckily, the last time I was there for Kidney stones, I had three good friends who were ER nurses who were working that night. I got lots of great drugs! Hint: Make friends with nurses!

You've been on my mind a lot lately. I hope things get better.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that.

I honestly had no idea what it was, to be honest. It almost felt like a heart attack at first (not that I'd know what one feels like). I have a couple friends who are nurses, but their hospital was a lot farther than the one I went to. I should've driven the extra 10 miles. The one I went to was fantastic when I was admitted for severe low blood sugar a few years ago. The rooms were comfy with nice TVs, and the doctors were great. However, their emergency department stinks.

Hopefully we can both somehow avoid this thing in the future.

Pleurisy is AWFUL! Mr. Chuck had it a long time ago and we both thought he was having a heart attack! With four boys, I am no stranger to the Emergency ROOM (Gosh --why would anybody change the name???) but that drive was Definitely the scariest trip I've ever made. Given what was probably going through your mind at the time, it makes me grumpy just to think about them not being kinder...

Hope you're feeling better soon.:thumbsup2

Hope your dad is doing better. I don't think its that the people who work there don't care, its that they have to do so much with so less.
not enough staff, not enough beds, not enough nurses to care for the incoming patients who need those beds, the list goes on and on.
and not to mention the problem in ED's with people who use them for primary care, because they have no insurance and no doctor, its a situation this country needs to improve on for sure.

Yes love us nurses, be our friend :)

Monorail Man, i hope you are well soon. as far as the hot or warm compress for that eye, you can use either,so he wasn't wrong, a hot compress will help with discomfort, while the cold will help with inflammation and itchiness.
as far as your pleurisy, did they rule out infection as the cause? are you coughing up anything? if you have mucus to come up, keep up with the ibuprofen so it is not painful for you to cough it up.
the max on ibuprofen for an adult who tolerates the drug is 800 mg three times a day.:thumbsup2

Agree with previous poster

Also if you lay on the effected side or splint with a pillow it may decrease some of the pain,

If you don't start feeling better in a few days I would go back and ? a bacterial cause.

SS that the staff didn't treat you well - some folks don't belong in the field.

Hope you feel better soon:hug:

I have no words of wisdom...just sending POSITIVE thoughts your way Sweetie!

Glad you got to the ER and found out what it is and that it's not too serious!! Hope you're feeling better soon! I dread whenever I have to go to the ER. I agree that it's most likely b/c they're short-staffed for the number of patients. I think part of the problem is people abuse the ER. I feel it's just as the name says, for an emergency. I know a couple people who go to the ER any time something is wrong, regardless of what it is. Many times they could easily wait to see their Dr. In your case the ER was definitely called for.
